SWV: They Missed Themselves…Do We?

Three groups. Nine women. Each broke their own ground and placed their permanent stamp on the music industry.Ironicially, something as simple as their stage names were intertwined at some point in their careers. First there was the most successful all female rap group, Salt N Pepa. We know them as Salt N Pepa today, but what you may not know is their original name was Super Nature. A few years later, another girl group composed of 2 singers and a rapper was formed….three women called 2nd Nature. We know them today as TLC. And then, there’s SWV…one of the premier R & B female groups of the 90s whose members consist of Taj, LeeLee and Coko….yep TLC. But T-Boz, Left Eye an Chilli beat them to the punch on the name and they became known as Sisters With Voices.  After 15 years since their last hits (“Rain” and “Can We”), they’re back on the music scene, hoping to once again rule the charts. But has too much time passed for this to be possible? Or is the music just not up to par?

90s R & B. One of the greatest times in music. SWV had a string of hits that left us wanting more. Who could forget “Weak”, “Anything” and “Downtown”? After a solo project, reality TV, and mortuary school, Taj, LeeLee and Coko have regrouped to give us their new project, I Missed Us. They start off on a promising note with the first single “Co-Sign”. I wouldn’t say the song fits comfortably next to some of their biggest hits, but it was a good choice for the first single. The first few tracks on I Missed Us are uptempo, and a bit dated. The group seems to be stuck in their heyday, but with less spark that we heard on songs like, “Right Here”.  ”Do Ya” is a nice club track that samples the Rufus hit “Do You Love Me”. However, the songwriting lacks here, as it does on many of the tracks. Lines like “I’m a 10, so go run to your 3″ seem a bit juvenile for a group that has such seasoned tenure. I’m just saying…

SWV slows things down after the uptempo tracks with “The Best Years”, a song where they tell a man that they gave him the best years of his life. As cocky as it sounds, they could have really worked this concept, but unfortunately it’s a lackluster track. “I Missed Us”, the title track, is a decent slow groove that I could see going over well with an older contemporary R & B audience. Interestingly, the group takes turns leading verses on several tracks, although Coko still takes most of the leads. Two of the CD’s standout tracks, “Love Unconditionally” and “If Only You Knew” (a remake) are not until the very end of the CD. Unfortunately, many listeners may not last until this point.

To declare, directly or indirectly, that you are missed by fans after a lengthy hiatus is a bold statement. I Missed Us has some potential, but SWV’s earlier works still reign supreme. The tracks are almost solely produced and written by Cainon Lamb could be partly to blame for the lack of variety on the project. They would have done better with a more diverse set of producers, and maybe a couple big names sprinkled here and there (I could see Timbaland and Rodney Jerkins working with them).  So is SWV missed? Yes, but I think the fans were expecting….eh, dare I say, more quality music. Time will tell how the CD fares on the charts, but in a fickle music business, they may need to quickly regroup and try again. I Missed Us gives enough for us to remember SWV, but the dated sound and generic lyrics are what makes it fall short….or “Weak”….and not weak in the knees.

The Power Of The “F” Word….

I’ve hated. Won. Lost. Been on the receiving and giving end of second chances. Held grudges. Cut people off. Caused myself physical harm. Misunderstood. Loved. Gotten into arguments. Yelled. Made a fool of myself. Sat back and laughed as others have made a fool of themselves trying to get a reaction out of me….all because of the F word….

Yep, I have done all of these things and more because of a simple word we all know….Forgiveness. We all know it’s right to forgive. It’s therapeutic to forgive. It’s beneficial to forgive. But is it ever easy to forgive? In some instances yes, but most times NO. When we’re in the heat of the moment of anger, hurt or pain, forgiveness is the last thing we think about. And sometimes, even if we do forgive quickly, we want to hold on to the anger just a little bit longer so we don’t look weak to the other person…SMH, lol. Sad to say, but it’s true. Think about the last time you got really angry at someone, and then think about how long it took for you to forgive them, or vice versa. Chances are, there was a time gap there that shouldn’t have been.

Last week, I posted a new poem I wrote called “Forgo Forgiveness”. I realized I was holding on to something that happened months ago and the feelings had resurfaced. I wanted to capture that raw emotion we feel when we become upset. This is the time when forgiveness is on the back burner and retaliation is at the forefront. At this point there’s almost no use in talking someone into a forgiving mindset, because they’re probably not thinking straight….and you’ll just end up getting hurt/upset in the process (sometimes it’s best to leave broken glass on the floor…). Who do you need to forgive today? What are you holding on to because you never got that apology you thought you deserved? Has everyone else forgiven you and you’re the only one left to forgive? Sometimes we can be our own worst enemy. Seek forgiveness, whatever the case may be….even if it’s from yourself. And if you don’t get the forgiveness or apology you desire? It’s not the end of the world….just live in the way you want to be treated. Living in a state of not forgiving primarily hurts you and not who you’re mad at.

Check out my poem, “Forgo Forgiveness”…..

I’m going to forgo forgiving you

It takes too much energy to smile and

Fake and laugh in your face

And take a deep breath…

When I really want to punch you

Like the poster child of

Every blood boiling moment

I’ve ever had rolled into one…fist

Make that two

When I think of you

I’m forgoing forgiving you

My stomach churns just to look at you

And the sweetest medicine

Is watching you suffer

Oh don’t look at me and point your fingers

Many of you bathe in this same acid

The ph balance of your soul is off kilter

So when you cleanse your self

And make it out unscathed

Then come tell your truth

Until then I’ll forgo forgiving you too

Oblivious to the fact that you’ve moved on

While I’m still stuck here holding

On to jagged, crusty edges of memories

That only pierce my existence

Until I resemble a honey comb

Holy, but not full of praise

You are worthy and I am out of place

Out of touch with reality

And missing the clear picture

Forgiveness ain’t all about the listener

We must not forgo the element

That pertains to the speaker

Think Like A Man…Act Like A Fool

In case you didn’t know, comedian/actor/author Steve Harvey has released his new movie, “Think Like A Man” which is based on his book, Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man. I haven’t seen the movie, but those that have seen it say it’s pretty good. Kudos to him and he’s probably thinking like a millionaire all the way to the bank (the movie was #1 its opening weekend, pulling in $33 million), lol. But I’m not here to talk about Steve Harvey or relationships today….well, at least not directly.

On Monday, NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders tweeted to  390,000 + followers, “Pray for me and my kids now! They just witnessed their mother and a friend jump me in my room. She’s going to jail n I’m pressing charges!” WTH?! Say it ain’t so….this can’t be true. It’s bad enough to tweet your personal business (more than likely in an attempt to gain attention), but why get your kids involved in that?! Again…WTH?! Pilar, Deion Sanders estranged wife and now WWE wrestling candidate, has some explaining to do too though. If he didn’t hit you, why are you jumping him???? But more importantly, why do people feel the need to put their personal business on social media forums? Some things just should not be share for all of the world to see. I’m just saying…

Then there’s Nicki Minaj….the classic case of removing social media outlets in efforts to gain attention. After what seems like disappointment behind lackluster album sales, she has decided to delete her Twitter account that had over 11 million followers.  She reportedly did this because she’s sick of all the buzz behind her selling out and becoming a pop artist. Somebody please let me know when these people have real problems in their lives….SMH. I’m sure with the headache over selling out or not, comes a fat check. Hmmm….so is this supposed to make everyone rush out to get the CD?? It seems like people these days are following the mantra, “All publicity is good publicity”.  But that doesn’t work for everyone… Nicki Minaj’s whole image is built on shock value, so she would have to do something pretty drastic in her personal life to drum up major sales….but again, I’m just saying… In a recent interview with UK radio host Tim Westwood, where she refers to herself in 3rd person as “the kid”, she says, “”People aren’t even giving the kid props for taking it back to the essence. This is my fourth mixtape, really. The kid did like that so she could feed her fans. But really, now the kid is thinking maybe she should leave the game.” Who the heck is the kid?!?! Nonsense….

The point of it all is why air out your dirty laundry in the media? True we all have it…but don’t all want to smell it. Keep some things private…everybody doesn’t need to know everything. And deleting Facebook and Twitter accounts to gain attention may not be the best way to go either. You’ll feel even worse if you do and no one begs you back….just a thought. So what are your thoughts on it? Do you think Twitter and Facebook users have gotten too outrageous with their posts, status updates, Tweets and Twit pics? What should these outlets really be used for? WTH is really going on…
