No Doubt “Pushes and Shoves” Back To Music

It’s been a few years since we’ve heard from the group No Doubt. You probably remember them from such hits like “Hell Good”, “Hey Baby”, “Don’t Speak”, and “Underneath It All”. In the meantime, front woman Gwen Stefani has enjoyed massive solo success on her own. But on September 25, 2012, the group will reunite to release their new project, Push and Shove. I’m sure many hard-core No Doubt fans are waiting for this new CD, since they haven’t released any new material since 2001′s Rock Steady. Their new single, “Settle Down” is an upbeat mix of rock, pop and some hip hop. Will this be another hit from the group? Only time will tell. Although I don’t see “Settle Down” being a massive success on the charts, I do think it will do well and get fans ready to Push and Shove on September 25th to buy their new CD.

What are your thoughts on this song and the video? Are you a No Doubt fan or do you prefer Gwen Stefani on her own?

Say What??? The Golden Make Believe

Lately I’ve been searching for new music that has a fresh style that’s not really out right now. Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy some of today’s popular and mainstream music, but I also like to listen to music most people may not initially try out. Speaking of popular music, my first time hearing Santigold was on Drake’s song “unstoppable”, which also features Lil Wayne. This song has been on my iPod for a long time and I because really interested in who the girl was singing the hook on the song.

If you remember the song,  ”Paper Planes” by MIA (also featured in the movie Slumdog Millionaire), then you have a taste of what Santigold sounds like. I found Santigold’s new CD, Master of My Make Believe on iTunes recently. It was only $7.99, and I liked several of the songs I previewed from the CD, so I decided to buy it. And I’m glad I did. Although some of the productions and lyrics are a little out there, I can respect that at least she’s coming with something different and refreshing to the table. Master of My Make Believe‘s first track, “Go!” featuring Karen O, is a highly addictive song that makes you feel like you’re inside a Legend of Zelda video game.  This song is extremely catchy and very upbeat. Another interesting song on the CD is “The Keepers”. And if you thought the song was a little different from what you’re used to, check out the video below

Santigold is an artist who is an eclectic mix of many elements: some pop, some Reggae, some dance and some conscious. Only 2 CD’s in, she already has a confidence of a veteran artist. “Disparate Youth” is an inspirational track that’s one of the stand outs on the CD. It’s quite comical and interesting when Santigold reveals part of her raunchy side on the tracks “Freak Like Me” (I could easily hear Gwen Stefani on this track) and “Look At These H%$&”.  However, “Freak Like Me” has a concept that’s a little different from what its title suggests. In one the verses, she says, “You want you never stop/You need the money/You look good in Photoshop/Sunny”.

For anyone that’s looking for some thought-provoking music with interesting production, you should definitely check out Santigold’s Master of My Make Believe. Also, make sure to check out the video at the opening of the post, where I’m discussing song lyrics and what they really mean, including a track from today’s review of Santigold.

The Seduction of the “P” Word

It has been known to seduce. It has been known to divide. It comforts and heals. It conquers all feelings of honesty and creates jealousy. It kills and then blames you for the act. It eats away at your soul and lies at the root of all vanity….and disaster. It’s the subtle warning before you see the flashing lights coming towards you. You won’t see it on my sleeve. You won’t always see it on their face. What is this dangerous P word? PRIDE!

I’ve been thinking lately about how pride hinders us (including myself) in so many ways. It tarnishes our relationships, friendships, and even our health. What is it about pride that is so attractive that we must hold on to it for dear life? I know I have been guilty of this before. Whether it’s being sick and trying to be a man about it and just making myself worse (I prefer to just be left alone when I feel sick) or being ashamed to admit that an unexpected expense causes me to need extra cash, I’ve done it. And don’t you find it strange that even after we think we’ve learned the lesson from those prideful moments, we still fall into the same traps?

If you really think about it, we exhibit at least one (if not multiple forms) of pride every day. Let’s start with getting your clothes ready for work. Do you pick out that certain outfit on the meeting day with your big execs because you don’t care how you look (probably not good, lol), you genuinely want to look your best or you want to impress those execs? Chances are, your answer is one of or a mix of the last 2 choices. Then let’s take that dream car you can’t keep your eyes off of. Is it a Bentley, Lexus, Maserati, or Mercedes? You may genuinely like these cars and if so that’s how it should be. But how much do the desires behind our dream cars and houses really cater to what other people think, leaving what we want in the dark? Suppose someone’s dream car is a Kia (highly unlikely). They probably wouldn’t admit this too much, because it’s not a status symbol.

Don’t get me wrong, we should take enough pride in ourselves to look presentable, be confident, and know our own self-worth. But just like there’s a thin line between love and hate, there’s probably an even finer line between unhealthy and healthy pride (if there is such a thing).  Just like some of the foods we eat, we have to use pride sparingly, because it’s never good to be too prideful. No matter who you are, you will need forgiveness, a helping hand, or understanding at some point in your life. And if it hasn’t happened to you yet, your turn is coming.

What are your thoughts on pride? Should we only possess a little of it or avoid this “P” word altogether?

Freedom Fighters or Calorie Counters?

Forbidden fruit is always sweeter. Since the beginning of time, this is a known fact. There’s something about telling people they can’t have something that makes them want it even more. For New York City citizens, they may become all too familiar with this scenario sooner than they think. Last month, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced that in order to promote healthier lifestyles in the city, there should be a ban on the sale of large-sized sodas (over 16 ounces) in restaurants, coffee shops, sporting venues, etc (besides grocery stores). He believes the city is obese, and this will help them make more health conscious beverage selections. Ironically, New York City was participating in National Donut Day the very next day after this very press conference. Entenmann’s even unveiled a 1 foot in diameter donut in Madison Square Park. That happened at the same time Michael Bloomberg’s proclamation letter was set to be unveiled by the public. WTH?! So it’s ok to eat donuts, as long as you don’t drink 32 oz sodas????

Meanwhile, Deputy Mayor Linda Gibbs, tried to defend the conflict between the red light on sodas and the green light on donuts by stating, “The celebratory events, the naming days in honor of individuals or items, or frivolities that are fun and [bring] exceptional joy are quite distinct from a public health agenda.” Yeah….Right Mayor Gibbs. If that helps you sleep at night…. As if to give the city some kind of treat to avoid cold turkey soda binges, Diet soft drinks and 0 calorie options would be excluded from the soda ban. But if you thought New Yorkers were taking this lightly, then think again. Although they will not be able to vote to stop the proposed ban (only approval from the NYC Department of Health is needed), members of the New Yorkers for Beverage Choices hand delivered over 6,100 comments from New Yorkers who oppose the ban. They also brought forth a very good point on the scheduling of yesterday’s public hearing: ”By scheduling this hearing in the middle of a business day during many restaurants’ and delis’ busy lunch periods, the Department of Health is sending a clear message that they are not interested in hearing what real New Yorkers have to say about this proposal.” New Yorkers are not standing by to watch how this situation fizzles out. They’re taking matters into their own hands to make a difference.

When I first heard about this, I was honestly very angered by it. With all of the poverty, senseless acts of violence, and equal rights issues floating around to be dealt with, why is soda such a big deal? True, we all know sodas aren’t good for us, but is Mayor Bloomberg really crazy enough to think that this will stop obesity??? If he was really concerned, do something like buying people healthy groceries with their gym memberships. How about that Bloomberg? (he doesn’t even get the handle of Mayor right now). I’ve never even been to New York, but I feel their pain. And to top all of it with a National Donut Day?! WTH? Let’s a take a minute to break these calories down. There are 310 calories in a 32 oz soda. A medium-sized donut is 255 calories. That’s a 55 calorie difference from not picking up the 32 oz soda. But the reality is, you’ll probably just drink one 32 oz soda in a day. But will you just eat one medium-sized donut? Highly unlikely! That’s 510 calories in less than 5 minutes (if you eat fast like me). Should have reached for that soda instead huh?
