Two Can Play That Game

Life is a game.  No matter how you analyze or dissect it, it’s all a game.  Let’s take dating for instance. We say we don’t like playing games, but we play them don’t we? Don’t think so? I beg to differ. Just think about dating or just going out on the weekend. Ladies, do you not get dressed up in your most form-fitting dress, put every strand of hair in place and flawless makeup? Guys, do you not put on your best smelling cologne, maybe do a few extra push ups, and shave right before we walk out the door. Again, it’s all a game to get what you want out of life.

One of the games we find ourselves on the extreme cooperative or non cooperative end of is when it comes to the work place. Do you consider yourself to be an over political or under political person when it comes to the workplace? Even if you possess qualities of both, chances are you lean more heavily to one side. I recently finished reading a really informative book on workplace behavior and scenarios called Survival of the Savvy: High Integrity Political Tactics for Career and Company Success (sheesh….say that 10 times fast) by Rick Brandon, Ph.D., and Marty Seldman, Ph.D.

I received the book as part of a course I took for work called, “Organizational Savvy”. The class and the book both discuss how we all have a “political buzz” about us, whether we realize it or not. Are you known as the over bearing project leader or maybe the passive leader who needs just a push of aggressiveness to really succeed? Brandon and Seldman define “organizational politics” as  informal, unofficial, and sometimes behind-the scenes efforts to sell ideas, influence an organization, increase power, or achieve other targeted objectives. The purpose of the book is not to take you completely out of your comfort zone. It’s more so to help you realize that if you do certain things as an over or under political person, you will more than likely get specific results. The best thing is to take pieces of each side to be stern, balanced, and progressive in your career.

So you may be thinking, “I don’t care about my job,” or “This doesn’t apply to me”. Not so fast….it does. Whether you’re in the corporate world or not, you have to deal with people in everyday life. As long as we have to deal with people, there will always be politics. So why not incorporate these values for what we get paid to do? It just makes sense. Make sure to check out Survival of the Savvy…You can find it online at Amazon.com and at your local bookstore. Trust me, you’ll be glad that you read it.

It’s game time, so how are you going to play? Share your testimony of times you had to deal with organizational politics and how you handled it?

Are CD’s Being Replaced by iTunes???

Anyone that knows me knows that I’m a lover of music. R & B and Hip Hop are my most favorite, but I can find songs that I like in pretty much any genre. The last 2 CDs I bought were James Fortune’s Identity and Wale’s Ambition (I know…..opposite ends of the spectrum…don’t judge me, lol). Well I actually lied…these weren’t tangible CDs that I bought. I bought them both on iTunes. Although I’m enjoying both of the CDs, I kinda regret getting them on iTunes.

If there is such a thing, I’m a self-proclaimed CD nerd, lol. If it’s a really good CD, I like to have the real CD booklet to read through….not a burned a copy or iTunes download. iTunes does have it’s perks-the digital copy of the CD booklet and sometimes music videos included as a bonus when you purchase the CD. But nothing beats getting the actual CD rang up at Target (Target Tuesdays…..I’m a recovering addict, lol). and reading who produced and wrote the songs and viewing the CD artwork. But I seem to the be in the very slim majority here. Most people are turning towards downloads to get their favorite music instead of purchasing an actual CD. And the artists are becoming more savvy by including perks that only come with an iTunes purchase.

When do you think CD’s will actually become extinct? I personally don’t think it will be long at all.

Are we that enticed by the simple click of a button to get our music instead of paying for it at a register? That seems to be the case. The CD is slowly fading away, so for those that are like me and want the real thing….you may want to stock up now while you can.

Missy Elliott: Time To Whip Up A New CD…

Musical genius.  Creator. Visionary.  Inventor.  Trendsetter.  These are just some of the words that come to mind when I think of Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott. She first captured (on a widely large scale) the attention of fans with her quirky, Hype Williams directed music video “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly).” From then on I was hooked. Who was this crazy woman dancing in a humongous trash bag with finger waves and baggy clothes? With her hilarious punch lines, addictive beats (produced largely by herself and Timbaland), and R & B style, there is really no other artist quite like her.

Missy has worked with just about everyone in the music business (Madonna, Janet Jackson, Beyonce, Jay-Z, Jodeci, The Clark Sisters, R, Kelly, Katy Perry and many others). The interesting part about her music is she is just as entertaining as a singer as she is a rapper. Until recently, she has had a track record of releasing a CD every year and a half or so (2005’s Cookbook is my favorite). However, it’s been almost 6 years since her last studio CD. What is taking so long Missy?!?! We’ve heard her on some features here and there (check out J Cole’s “Nobody’s Perfect” from Cole World) and even some solo tracks (“Shake Your Pom Pom” and “Ching-A-Ling”). There has been talk of a new CD called Block Party for a couple of years, but no definite confirmation on that yet.

Perhaps some of this could be due to her recent diagnosis of Graves’ Disease. She broke her 3 year-long silence earlier this year about the disease on VH1’s Behind the Music. Hopefully she is doing better and being treated properly for her condition. In the meantime, we can catch her writing and producing for artists, but no clear sign on when she’ll record again. Nevertheless, her strong presence in music is definitely missed. Check out some of her videos over the years and a clip from her VH1 Behind the Music episode.
