Give Me My Props

Gone are the days where artists can depend on selling millions of records to fill their pockets.  The 1990s saw several artists exceed diamond status- 10 million plus records sold-(Alanis Morisette, Garth Brooks, Boyz II Men, TLC), but now artists are lucky if their CD goes double platinum. But is it that the music is just not quite as influential, inspiring or exciting? Although that could very well be, the real culprit is the dominance of the digital age. In a previous post, I talked about how physical CDs are becoming extinct due to the overshadowing of digital downloads. Many music fans of today would rather the convenience of downloading a CD and transferring it straight to their iPod, phone, or mp3 players than buying a CD in the store.  What about the people who wrote, arranged and produced these songs? That is exactly the petition that  Grammy is hosting to bring more awareness to credits for writers, producers and instrumentalists.

When we purchase digital downloads, we only are able to see the artists and the song/album title (unless it’s an enhanced edition that includes CD liner notes). But that may be changing very soon. Ambassadors of the “Give Fans The Credit” petition are Sheila E (the fiery female drummer from Prince’s hey day), Jimmy Jam (One half of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis production due. Think any major Janet Jackson song), and Skylar Grey (instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and producer) are just a few who think fans should get to view extended credits.

I personally think this is a great idea, but I also think I’m in the minority on this one. I think most of today’s music fans don’t feel slighted by only receiving artist credits. The rationale from the Ambassadors and supporters of this petition is that including the extended credits will produce heightened music awareness and increased fan demand for certain musicians, songwriters and producers. I signed up for the petition and I’m curious to see how the results turn out. If you’d like to support this effort, go to http://www.grammy.com/credits.

What do you think about this petition? Will it get an overwhelming number of signers or will fans just overlook it?

In other digital music news, you’ll probably never guess which Hip Hop artists has the most digital downloads ever. Is it LL Cool? Lil Wayne? T.I.? Ludacris? Kanye West? Jay Z? Well think again because it’s….

FLO-RIDA. Yep you may be scratching your head now just like I was, but here’s the reason why he received this prestigious (um, at least I think so) honor.

  • His new single “Whistle” is at the top of the iTunes and Billboard Hot 100 Chart…with sales already past the 4 million mark.
  • He broke his own record previously set by his hit song “Low”, with “Right Round” which had over 635,000 downloads in its first week alone.
  • His breakout hit “Low” has sold just a few hundred thousand units past the 6 million mark.

Just goes to show that quantity doesn’t always equal quality. No disrespect to Flo-Rida, but there are plenty other talented Hip Hop artists I think are much more deserving of this crown.

Bump It Or Dump It? Xplosive, Xplicit, & unXpected

If you read my last Bump It Or Dump It? review (Vocal Wars Behind The Music), you’ll remember that there was a wide range of artists and genres including Maroon 5, Brandy, Marvin Sapp and Goodie Mob. Well, it’s that time again and today I have another mix of artists who will be just as interesting…if not more. Check out my thoughts on each of these songs below…and feel free to leave your own.

Brian McKnight: iFUrReadyToLearn

We all know Brian McKnight for such smooth groove R & B hits like “Anytime”, “Back at One”, “Crazy Love” and “One Last Cry”.  He’s the clean-cut, contemporary artist that pushes the envelope at times (check out the 2006 song “Addicted” with rapper Juvenile that he’s featured on).  But he has finally turned the tables on us. Yep…all of em….the class room table, the dinner table and the operating table. In his new song “iFUrReadyToLearn”, he sings lyrics that would even make Nicki Minaj blush. What makes this so much more interesting is he’s singing the song as if it’s a real ballad. Really Brian McKnight???  The track is supposedly being used for an adult website. Good for him if he’s making money off of it, but is there a difference between pushing the envelope and ripping it open? I personally think he’s way out of his lane on this one. I understand being diverse and creative, but I don’t think any of his fans look to him for this kind of music. I’m just saying…I won’t post the full video here (due to extreme explicit content), but if you want to hear a preview of the song, check out the video above. ***Update: I just heard this morning that Brian McKnight has now released a new song that will put “iFUrReadyToLearn” to shame. SMH….*** What is really going on?

Estelle: Thank You

I’m not a huge follower or fan of Estelle, although I think she has a beautiful voice. Most people may know her for her hit song “American Boy”, but “Thank You” is a more mature, intentional and painful offering than we’ve seen from her on any other single. I instantly liked this song as soon as I heard it. I actually thought it was Sade though until about the middle of the song. There’s also a hint of Mary J Blige here. But the gist here isn’t who she sounds like, but how many more listeners she’s sure to gain with “Thank You” and her new CD All Of Me. I’m interested to see what direction her CD will go in (more ballads like “Thank You” or uptempo songs)I’ve been sleeping on Estelle, but I’m awake now. I see her possibly winning a Grammy for this one. Check out the song for yourself and see what you think about it.

Jason Aldean Featuring Ludacris: Dirt Road Anthem

What’s better than smoke blowing out the window and an ice cold beer in the console? According to Country singer Jason Aldean, there’s nothing better. I know what you’re thinking…”How the heck did this collaboration happen?” I thought the same thing. But, this song is actually really good and has surprisingly been out for over a year. I just recently heard it from a friend. Not only does Ludacris rap on the track, but so does Jason. And dare we say it…he’s actually got some skills!! This is a cool, laid back song that has a true country vibe to it. However it has a high energy that’s fun and enjoyable (complete with a jamming guitar solo towards the end). If you haven’t heard this song, check it out! You’ll be glad that you did. This just goes to show that with talent and creativity, great music can cross barriers and genres we didn’t think were possible.

Nas: Daughters

In case you didn’t know, rapper Nas is making a return to music with his 10th studio album, Life Is Good, in July of this year. The first single to be lifted from the project is “Daughters”, a transparent and honest look into how he feels to raise a daughter and the dangers, insecurities and prideful moments that come along with it. Nas has always been a conscious artist who shows he’s a deep thinker through his music. “Daughters” is no different, but in a sense it is. I was skeptical on if I would really enjoy the song, because….well, I don’t have kids, lol. But, I was pleasantly surprised and the video ties in the song well. I’ve always been a fan of Nas, and it’s good to see him making music again (especially after his highly publicized divorce with singer Kelis). Great to know that “life is good” for him and I’m eager to hear the new CD.

Chris Brown Joins Rihanna On “Birthday Cake” Remix….

Hot off the heels (better yet knuckles, lol) of her new “Thug Life” tattoo, Rihanna has decided to join forces with Chris Brown on the remix of her song “Birthday Cake” taken from the Talk That Talk CD ***blank stare***.   And this is only 1 of 2 recent collaborations. Rihanna is also featured on Chris Brown’s remix to the song “Turn Up The Music” from his upcoming Fortune album.  At almost this exact same time 3 years ago, the former couple was thrown into media frenzy over their pre-Grammy awards brawl.

Seems like the two have moved on and forgiven each other. But could this be a mistake for their careers (more so Rihanna’s)? Producer and songwriter The Dream, who co wrote and produced the original “Birthday Cake” track says he had no idea Rihanna had any intentions of featuring Chris Brown on the remix. Hmmmm…..it’s also interesting to note that “Birthday Cake” is actually just over 1 minute long on the original CD version….now it’s a full length song. Not surprisingly, Chris Brown walked away with this year’s Best R&B Album Grammy Award for F.A.M.E. (Check out my “2012 Grammy Predictions” post).

Because of the song’s explicit content, I have not posted the “Birthday Cake” remix here, but you can check out the “Turn Up The Music” remix below. So what do you think of their decision to collaborate again with each other after the breakup? Could they just be joining forces to make a hit or is it a big mistake?
