P!nk: Don’t Fade To Black

In today’s music business, any artist who makes it past their sophomore album should consider themselves lucky. Especially an artist who almost does a complete 360 on their image and sound after their first album. Meet Alecia Beth Moore. You may not know her by her real name…but you definitely know her stage name, P!nk. She’s had a string of huge hits including “You Make Me Sick,” “Just Like A Pill,” “Trouble”, and “So What”.  When she first hit the scene, her sound was  Contemporary R & B, and her style was baggy pants and midriff tops.  With 3 top 10 singles and over 6 million albums sold worldwide, it seemed as if P!nk had a formula no one in their right mind would mess with.

But P!nk defied the sophomore jinx in a bold way, trading in her polished R & B sound for a more grungy, jagged, rock inspired alter ego. But something about this new image didn’t seem like a different identity. It seemed like P!nk was much more comfortable in her own skin this time around. This new image was further cemented by her massive hit, “Don’t Let Me Get Me” where she takes a stab at LA Reid and Britney Spears, singing, “LA told me, you’ll be a pop star/All you have to change is/Everything you are/Tired of being compared/To damn Britney Spears/She’s so pretty/That just ain’t me). P!nk’s second album, Missundaztood went on to sell over 13 million copies. P!nk proved she was as vibrant as ever and would be around for years to come.

P!nk is currently recovering from having her gallbladder removed.  She was forced to cancel a planned performance at a fundraiser for President Obama in Hollywood. Darren Criss, from “Glee”, was her fill in. She, along with her husband Carey Hart, also recently bashed Chris Brown and Katy Perry for their performances at this year’s Billboard Music Awards. She claimed that both musical acts took pieces of some of her prior performances into theirs and that Chris Brown lipsynced his entire performance. Cocky she might be, but she has the music to back it up. Speaking of her music, I’ve really been wanting to see a new album from her recently. Funhouse is her best CD to date in my opinion, but she just seems to keep getting better with time. And who could forget her feature on Eminem’s “Won’t Back Down” song from his Recovery CD? But other than her “Lady Marmalade” collaboration (with Missy Elliot, Lil Kim, Mya and Christina Aguilara) from the Moulin Rouge soundtrack, she really hasn’t worked with other artists on her own CDs. I would love to see her work with Alanis Morisette, T-Boz and Andre 3000 on her next CD. ”So What” do you think? Should P!nk make another CD or focus on raising her daughter Willow and being a wife?

Battle of the Sexes

This summer there will be plenty new music to choose from.  From uptempo songs, to ballads, rock, rap and R & B, there’s something for everyone.  But who has the hottest music right now?  Is it the guys or the ladies? Check out some recent releases and see for yourself….be sure to cast your vote for your favorite male and female songs.

The Women

Beyonce: Run the World (Girls)

I initially had a love/hate relationship ship with this song. I immediately loved the music on the track, but wasn’t too fond of the singing and the lyrics.  But true to form for many Beyonce songs, this one has started to grow on me.  The girl power, independent woman theme is a little far spent, but I must admit that Beyonce has put an original spin on it this time.  The song has an upbeat multicultural feel to it, which is further carried out in the music video. Look for the single to be featured on her upcoming CD, 4.

Kelly Rowland Featuring Lil Wayne: Motivation

Former Destiny’s Child member, Kelly Rowland, has returned with a new solo single that is arguably her best to date.  “Motivation” grabs your attention within the first few seconds.  The seductive, slow groove track, mixed with Kelly’s sultry vocals make for a great combination.  Not to mention Lil Wayne’s verse; which adds more edge to a song that already pushes the envelope on innuendo.  This single will be featured on Kelly Rowland’s new CD, Here I Am.

Katy Perry Featuring Kanye West: ET (Remix)

Katy Perry has become known for her catchy hooks and pop sound.  On this track, she takes a more edgy approach that has a rock, hip hop vibe to it.  She also enlists the help of Kanye West, who has two featured verses on the song.  The song details how the person she’s describing is like an alien from outer space…sounds weird huh? But trust me, it’s addictive.  Plus, the music video is probably the best one I’ve seen all year. This is the fourth single from Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream CD.

Mary J Blige Featuring Lil Wayne and Diddy: Someone To Love Me

So it seems that Mary J Blige might be pairing up with Diddy again for a new album. This could go one of two ways, extremely successful (My Life album) or not so much (Love & Life album). But hopefully, since the new CD will be called My Life II, we will expect more of a success.  This song picks up where MJB classics like “Be Happy” and “Real Love” leave off.  Seems like she has come full circle, which wouldn’t be such a bad thing if you take out the slightly annoying chorus. Diddy’s verse wasn’t really needed here (even though his group Dirty Money originally had the song first).  But Lil Wayne helps revive it a bit.

The Men

Lenny Kravitz- Come On Get It

I’ve never been a huge Lenny Kravitz fan, but I do have some favorites (“Are You Gonna Go My Way”, “Fly Away”).  “Come On Get It” breaks the mold though and is full of energy from start to finish. With the right promotion, it is sure to be a big hit.  The lyrics are catchy and the track is led by heavy guitars and drums.  I haven’t heard this one on the radio yet, but you can check it out on Itunes. There’s no music video yet either, but you can check out the live performance from this year’s NBA All Star Weekend.

Miguel: Sure Thing

This song didn’t initially catch my attention when I first heard it, but it grows on me more and more.  The track is very mellow, as are the vocals. Some of the lyrics are what made me take notice (You be the match/I’ll be the lighter).  “Sure Thing” is lifted from Miguel’s self titled debut CD.  There’s something about it that eventually made me like the song, but I can’t put my finger on it. It will be interesting to see what music Miguel has to offer in the future.

Chris Brown: She Ain’t You

“She Ain’t You” is the current single from Chris Brown’s FAME cd.  The theme of the song is about him being caught up in a love triangle.  But what really makes the song shine is that it cleverly samples both SWV’s “Right Here” and Michael Jackson’s “Human Nature.” SWV and Chris Brown both actually sampled from the latter, but the combination here is seamless.  This was a smart choice for a single and should be successful for Chris Brown.

Lupe Fiasco Featuring Trey Songz: Out of My Head

“Out of My Head” is the new single from Lupe Fiasco’s Lasers CD.  Fans have been eagerly anticipating new material since the success of Lupe Fiasco’s last CD, The Cool.  This is a more radio friendly track that features rapid fire rhymes from Lupe Fiasco, while Trey Songz sings the hook.  This song has high energy and is a great listen but the traditional Lupe fans may find this one to be a little too pop sounding for him.
