Best Love Songs Ever Recorded (Part 1)

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, there will be plenty of chocolates, last-minute gifts, hearts and notes that read, “Do you like me?….circle yes or no”. If you’re reading this and above middle school age, hopefully you’re not guilty of the latter gesture. But there’s one thing we can’t forget…the music. There are plenty of love songs out there, but I’ve made a list of the cream of the love crop (in my opinion). These 10 songs are the most vivid depictions of the good, not so good, best and breathtaking moments of love. This will be a 2 part blog in which there will be 5 songs each that are revealed. Makes sure to come back later today for the complete list and the rounding out of the top 10.

10. Jill Scott/BOOMscat: Cross My Mind

Jill Scott 1

“I was just thinking about you”. Jill Scott has a way of making the simplest of statements and concepts mesmerizing. She reminisces about a past lover and takes the listener through her see saw emotions of calling, not calling, smiling and being disgusted. By the time the song ends, she never picks up the phone to pour it these explicit thoughts racing through her mind and concludes that they were just oil and water from the start. Classic. Make sure to check out BOOMscat’s version of “Cross My Mind” at the link below. I must admit, I’m skeptical of anyone touching a Jill Scott song. But the duo pulls off this cover extremely well and even adds a bit of their own flavor.

Check out the BOOMscat rendition here (a mashup of Frank Ocean’s “Thinkin Bout You” and Jill Scott’s “Cross My Mind”)

9. Mary J. Blige: I’m In Love

Mary J Blige 1

Mary J Blige is an artist whose pain always seems to overshadow even her greatest of celebrations. “I’m In Love”, lifted from the 1999 Mary album, proves why she’s 20 plus years strong in the music business and shows no signs of stopping any time soon. Lyrically, this song is honest, pure and straight to the point. Musically, the track is smooth enough to listen to on its own. Her tone is even a bit melancholy here….but she says she’s in love and it sounds very believable.  ”Feeling you/There is nothing I won’t do….I’m in love”.

8. Earth Wind & Fire: Would You Mind

Earth wind and fire

This is a feel good, innocent love song that proves you don’t have to be raunchy to make a point. Although this song isn’t as big as “Reasons” or “September”, it’s probably my favorite from this classic R & B group. The production and the vocals are timeless and this is definitely a love song to put on repeat.

7. R. Kelly: You Remind Me of Something

R Kelly

Who else can compare a woman to a jeep and they feel honored? If anybody can do it, leave it up to R. Kelly. In perhaps the most lyrically creative love song series (this song birthed “Ignition” years later and its remix), only he can get away with singing, “You remind me of my jeep/I wanna ride it”. As one of the most versatile artists of his kind (think “Half On A Baby” vs. “I Believe I Can Fly”),  R. Kelly has had a lot of negative press in recent years but you can’t deny his musical genius whether you like him or not.

6. P!nk: The Great Escape

pink black

Many of Pink’s initial fan base feels that she sold out her R & B roots (her first CD Can’t Take Me Home was pure R & B/Pop), for a more gritty, Rock inspired sound. But those vocal chords have always been here. “The Great Escape” is featured on her most recent release, The Truth About Love and is perhaps the most vulnerable song on the album. I actually favor the Pink that emerged after her first album. The song comes from a selfish point of view from someone who always runs away, but challenges their lover not to.

Johnta Austin: Turn It Up (Throwback Song of the Week)

If you don’t know Johnta Austin as a singer, you definitely know some of the hit songs he’s written artists like Mariah Carey (“We Belong Together”) and Mary J Blige (“Be Without You”). He has tried his hand at singing before and is actually a good singer in my opinion. This year he has released a few tracks here,  including a track with Trey Songz called “Never Enough Time”. Now he’s on the brink of releasing a new mixtape in December titled Love. The first single from that project is “What A Feeling” featuring Jermaine Dupri. Although this song and some of the other unreleased ones are pretty good, there’s one that sticks out the most to me. “Turn It Up” was released in 2006 and was one of my favorite R & B songs that year. The song is a feel good track that gives props to just about every relevant R & B artist and what he would do to their songs. Check out this throwback song that may be the first listen for many of you. You’ll see producers Jermaine Dupri and Bryan Michael Cox make cameos in the video too.

Kendrick Lamar: good kid, Great Music

You may already be very familiar with K Dot (a.k.a Kendrick Lamar) by now. He recently dropped the “K Dot” moniker for his real name, but has been dropping mix tapes as far back as 2003. He released his debut CD, Section.80 in 2010, but it was overlooked in the mainstream music arenas. But things have turned around for the man who Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and The Game have proclaimed “The New West Coast King”. It’s a hefty name to live up to, but does Kendrick Lamar live up to the hype? I picked up his CD last week…..and what do I think about it? Check out my video commentary below on good kid, m.A.A.d city.

Bump It Or Dump It? Remakes, Re-Up & Recycle

Stooshe: Waterfalls

You know a song is a hit when it gets remade by another artist. What is even better is if the song is remade within the original artist’s lifetime and they endorse it. This is the case with English R & B trio Stooshe, who recently remade TLC’s “Waterfalls”. The group nails the pop elements of the song and doesn’t deviate much from its original version. The group decided to sing Left Eye’s rap in unison (which works well) and they performed at the 2012 MOBO Awards on Saturday. TLC were also honored for Outstanding Contributions to Music. The song lacks the gravel toned funk of T-Boz’s lead vocals, but the music video is pretty cool and T-Boz and Chilli liked it well enough to make a cameo at the end. Their self titled debut CD is set to hits stores next month.

Ester Dean: Can’t Make You Love Me

“Can’t Make You Love Me” by Bonnie Raitt has been remade so many times, I’ve almost gotten sick of the original and any remakes of it. There have definitely been some good ones (Tank’s is probably my favorite to date), but Ester Dean decided to put a techno pop spin to it. Her version is fresh and upbeat, despite the fact that it sounds eerily similar to Rihanna’s “We Found Love”. The song is lifted from her upcoming Story Never Told CD. In the meantime, you can catch her in the new comedy flick, “Pitch Perfect”.

Kendrick Lamar Featuring Drake: Poetic Justice

Ok, so I had to find out what all the hype was bout on Kendrick Lamar. I bought his CD a couple of weeks ago and I will definitely say it was worth the buy (check out my complete CD review on his good kid, m.A.A.d city project on my post later today) . Although, a little weird at times, good kid, m.A.A.d city delivers and is consistent throughout. Now if we can just get Dr. Dre to release that Detox album (he executive produced this CD). One of my favorite songs on the CD is “Poetic Justice” Featuring Drake. The Janet Jackson “Anytime, Anyplace” sample is perfect here and it’s a bit nostalgic in a good way. Drake’s verse compliments well here, but Kendrick Lamar holds his own strong. Believe the hype…this song and the CD are great.

Nicki Minaj Featuring Cassie: The Boys

Aagghhh…Nicki Minaj. The super animated, over imaged rap artist we love to hate…but love. Right on time for her Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded Re-Up re-release (say that 5 times fast), she has dropped a new single and video featuring Cassie. There are some artists that just make almost any song better (Missy Elliott, Busta Rhymes, Pink…maybe even Nicki Minaj), but Cassie? I’m still scratching my head on this collaboration. The video is entertaining to watch to say the least, but as for the song? I like the beat, but the subject matter here isn’t anything new….
