Today Is National Go Topless Day

***So when you woke up this morning, I’m sure you weren’t thinking today is a holiday. And you’d be right, because it’s not but something very interesting is happening today. It’s GO TOPLESS DAY! This is the fifth annual Go Topless holiday and it just so happens to fall on Women’s Equality Day this year. The rally will take place right outside the White House in Washington, DC. Participants are able to go fully topless, partially topless or fully clothed. Although it is legal to go topless in New York City, you may want to check for your city’s guidelines before the tops come off. Check out the original post (posted on August 1, 2012, below).***

Vote Topless!

There’s been a lot going in New York City. First Mayor Bloomberg was trying to ban sodas larger than 16 ounces and now the tops are coming all the way off….

You may have heard of the Canadian rock band Barenaked Ladies. But Moira Johnston is putting a new spin on the term. She’s a 29-year-old Philadelphia native and a stripper that lives in New York City. But wait, don’t turn your nose up at her just yet. After all, no one should be surprised to hear of a woman using music and a pole as part of her workplace atmosphere in this day and age. But to top it off, or rather take the top off of it, Moira Johnston walks around New York City in the daytime topless! Is she doing this to drum up additional clientele at night?!?! If so, let’s be real….who would really pay to see her at night when you can see almost all of what you want for free during the day? But no. This is not her intent. This bare naked lady is doing it all for a good cause. And her first time going topless was during a yoga class in January. She hasn’t looked back or kept clothes on since….LOL. WTH?!

Moira says she’s doing this for a little payback so to speak. She is tired of women being subjected to sexism. Since men can walk around with their shirts off, why can’t she? Although she’s not the first to walk around in public naked (Erykah Badu also did a similar expression of art in Dallas, TX for her “Window Seat” music video), she has definitely helped gain major momentum for her cause.  On August 26, women in 22 cities around the world will be participating in Go Topless Day (something Johnston will surely be participating in). Go Topless Day is a gathering of women standing up for equality with their tops off and the twist is that men can attend too. But they have to wear bras and bikini tops. It’s a role reversal of sorts so men can see how women are constantly being objectified in the media for sex.

I’m all for equality and I see Ms. Johnston’s point about women being treated right. But how seriously will people take this protest from a stripper? And again, doesn’t this topless protest cut into her nightly income? Why throw money to the performer when you can see the show for free? She was actually arrested by the police, but was “somehow” free to go after not being held long. Perhaps Moira Johnston felt that this was ok because it’s technically legal to go topless in New York. But even though it’s legal, does it make it right?

Is your vote for the top on or top off???

Music Monday: Top 5 Music Videos Of All Time

The evolution of music videos have really made an impact over the years. There’s nothing like watching a music video to a song you already like. Or if the video is extremely good, it will make you like the song even better. Today, at Peauxetic Expressions, I’ve decided to share some of my favorite music videos with you. All of these videos push the envelope of creativity, innovation, and trendsetting. There are so many videos that I love, but these are just a few that I can watch again and again. Hopefully these videos will make you reminisce on great times for this Memorial Day holiday. Feel free to submit your own list too!

Ok, so here’s my list of the 5 best music videos ever….in no particular order.

1. TLC: Waterfalls

“Waterfalls” is the song that really catapulted TLC’s career to superstar status. The song itself is already addictive, but the video makes you dive in even more.  TLC proved that they were more than just Crazy, Sexy and Cool. With complete story lines to accompany the songs verses, miraculously doing weird dancing on top of water, and transforming into see through blob figures, “Waterfalls” still packs the same punch now as it did in 1995. Who knew walking on water in midriff tops and baggy dresses could look so hot.

2. Missy Elliott: Sock It To Me

It’s safe to say that Missy Elliott is probably one of the best artists when it comes to music videos. Her visuals are always over the top and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a music clip from her that I didn’t enjoy. But the one that sticks out in my head the most is from her first CD, Supa Dupa Fly. The concept of “Sock It To Me” (which also features Da Brat and an appearance by Lil Kim) is set in a futuristic video game fantasy world where Missy, Da Brat and Lil Kim fight off their enemies on floating motorcycles, dodging fireballs the whole way through. This video seems to have absolutely nothing to do with the song….but who really cares when it looks this cool???

3. Michael Jackson: Remember The Time

Most people would probably say that “Thriller” is their favorite Michael Jackson video and it’s one of my favorites too. But the one that really stands out to me is “Remember the Time”. The video was released in 1992, from the hugely successful Dangerous CD. Everybody from Eddie Murphy to Magic Johnson was featured in the video too. The slick and polished looking pharaoh themed ambiance, complete with a vanishing whirlwind of sand spin from Michael Jackson, makes this video just as captivating today as it was during its original release. At almost 10 minutes long, this video is worth watching every second.

4. Busta Rhymes Featuring Janet Jackson: What’s It Gonna Be?

Busta Rhymes always finds a way to deliver outlandish and quirky videos to accompany his high energy songs. And “What’s It Gonna Be?” is no exception. However, on this clip, his approach is more sleek and shiny than bold and gritty. Complete with rain drops in the shape of falling Busta Rhymes figures that land on Janet Jackson, this video is amazing. Not to mention the painted on leather suit Janet Jackson wears in the video. We also see Busta Rhymes change from human to metal armor clad water figure. One of the best Hip Hop videos ever made….hands down.

5. Korn: Freak On A Leash

I’m not a huge fan of Korn, but I must say, their “Freak On A Leash” video is one of the best ever made. The symbolism of the flying bullet and the slow motion shots was ahead of its time when the video was released in 1998. The song, which was lifted from their Follow The Leader CD, proves the group was leading the pack outstanding music videos. I love the mix of animation, slow motion and live performances here. They just don’t make music videos like this anymore. And it’s also good to see Korn is still together. See if you can spot the dinosaur cell phone featured in the video, lol. How times have changed….

J Cole and Missy Elliott’s Perfect Imperfections

You may or may not have heard J Cole and Missy Elliott’s “Nobody’s Perfect” track, pulled from J Cole’s Cole World- Sideline Story CD.  The CD has been out for a while now, but the new single appears to be the Missy Elliott assisted, “Nobody’s Perfect”. Not to mention Missy’s guest appearance (she makes any song better), the track is great on its own with J Cole’s raps and the addictive production. J Cole’s slow flow is back by Missy’s sing-song rap chant (“Nobody’s perfect, aye/But you’re perfect for me”).

I’ve actually gotten a little annoyed with the current state of music, especially Hip Hop. With the exception of a few artists, there’s no substance or even a banging beat to bob your head to. But “Nobody’s Perfect” ironically breaks the mold with an awesome video that lives up to the infectious groove of the song itself. Complete with moving  post card scenes, cameras, with blinking eye lenses, ghosts appearing from an old school TV and a yellow and white lit stage for J Cole and Missy, this video is the best one I’ve seen for Hip Hop in a while. Better yet, one of the best videos I’ve seen lately, period. The creativity here is out of the ordinary and the visuals are very appealing to the eye. Thanks J Cole and Missy for helping to revitalize original thought and concepts to music video and song.

What do you think of the video? Are you feeling it or not? And by the way, Missy don’t make us wait too much longer for a new CD. I’m still jamming The Cookbook, but there’s definitely a void in music without you.

Common: Blue Sky….Breath of Fresh Air

Common is one of those artists that marches to the beat of his own drum. Some may have thought his last CD, Universal Mind Control (primarily produced by The Neptunes) was a change from the norm and a deeper dive into a more mainstream sound. And it could have been, but one thing that you still have to give him credit for is it was still in a class of its own. Some fans called it a sell out CD with no substance (I will admit, Be is still my favorite Common CD of recent releases).  And does anybody else remember “So Far To Go” featuring D’Angelo from the Finding Forever CD? Very underrated classic in my opinion. But I digress, and on to the new music….

In case you didn’t know, Common has a new single and video titled “Blue Sky”. “Blue Sky” finds Common reaching back to his earlier roots with a sound that’s vintage yet current at the same time. The song grows on me each time I hear it, which says a lot considering I liked it at the first listen. It’s nice to hear a song with a hot beat and great lyrics….a true deficit in popular music right now. The video is interesting too, even though it doesn’t seem to boast a $1 million + budget as so many of today’s music videos do. Just goes to show that nothing beats a little creativity and original thinking. I’m anxious to see what direction his upcoming CD, The Dreamer/The Believer will go in. Meanwhile check out the new video and let me know what you think.

Would you bump it or trash it?
