The PC (Peauxetically Correct) Corner…Vol. 1 (Encore)

As many of you may know, I’ll be releasing my second poetry book, Hindsight 20/20,  in early 2013. But in the meantime, I thought I’d keep everyone informed on my creative process and ideas until the release of my book. I love the thoughts behind poetry, why people write it, how they write it, etc. Below you will find a recent poem entitled “Encore”. This poem will not be featured in my new book, but I still decided to share it with everyone. Let me know what you think and what you perceive it to be about. However, I will caution you that it’s not what it seems….

This is the first post in a series for Peauxetic Expressions that will feature nothing but poetry. The PC Corner will feature works from myself, discussion topics, creative concepts, features from other writers and reviews on literary works….but all from the angle of poetry.

Hopefully you enjoy “Encore” as the first installment of the PC Corner:

PC Corner

Encore

The lights are dim

The music is waning

As you take center stage

And bow to screaming fans

Who adore your every move

This show is quite mesmerizing

I must admit

And for a second

I’m suspended in it too

Until I unlatch myself and free fall

Back to the reality

I know that they see your perfect image

And flawless performance

But I see the flaws and all

The grit underneath your nails

The deceit in your eyes

The personification of lies

I see the real you that

I’ve tried to warn them of

At every show

But somehow they keep

Requesting an encore

And who are you to not oblige

And give them more?

Tupac’s Back?!?!

Well….not exactly, but it sure looks like it. In case you haven’t already heard, Tupac performed at The 2012 Coachella Valley Music and Arts last weekend, alongside Snoop Dogg. Needless to say his performance was the most talked about of Coachella’s 2 weekends of performances for the event. Other guests include Eminem, Rihanna, Dr. Dre, Usher, Kendrick Lamar and Frank Ocean. I won’t be posting the video here due to the very explicit language, but it’s all over YouTube, so check it out there. How in the heck did they make it possible for Tupac to perform though??? Apparently there is a 3 part process which includes a reflected screen that bounces back to the on-stage image, which is located on the floor right below the stage. The behind the projected image on stage is a thin, foil like sheet that makes it all come to life.  But the image itself is only 2D. While Snoop Dogg was performing with the hologram Tupac, he could not stand too close to the image, in order to maintain the illusion for the crowd. He wasn’t even able to see Tupac on stage, like everyone else in the audience was.

Now there is talk of possible performances for next year’s show with Michael Jackson, Nirvanna, TLC and Muddy Waters? Hmmmm……I don’t know if I would pay to see a show like this. Sure, if it was part of a multi artist line up such as Coachella, I wouldn’t mind. Although, I’m sure the image of Tupac rising out of the bottom of the stage was quite a sight to see. And an eerie one at that. So before everyone starts with more “Tupac’s Still Alive” rumors, he even mentions Coachella in his performance. How is this possible?! Everything is pre programmed to what he will actually say during the show. I will admit, it does seem like Tupac has released much more music after his death than at the height of his popularity. Who has that much time to be in the studio?!?! And just as a side note, Dr. Dre is the one who came up with the idea to use the hologram during the performance. Interesting, especially considering that Dr. Dre was one of the many people Tupac lashed out at on record before his death. Word to the wise Dr. Dre, this may be the perfect time for you to release the Detox CD you’ve been promising for about 10 years now…..

Coachella 2012 wrapped up this weekend, but no one will receive the fanfare that Tupac got during this year’s event. I’m curious to hear what everyone’s thoughts are about it though? Was this too over the top or a great way to pay tribute? And dare I even ask, but is there someone out there that really thinks Tupac is still alive?

The Spoken Word of Poetry…

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Since the release of my book, Blurred Vision, there are 2 questions I hear pretty often. The first question is “What was your inspiration behind the poems?”  As far as inspiration, there’s really no telling what it could be. Although my primary inspiration is from personal thoughts or feelings I have about a situation at the moment, I can also be inspired by anger, a conversation, a song on the radio or just being observant of people. The inspiration is all around me and I love absorbing it.

The second question I hear is “Where/When do you perform spoken word?” I have begun to really think in-depth about this because to me there is a difference between spoken word and poetry. I like to think of poetry as more of a buffet and spoken word as a streamlined main course (I love food, so I relate a lot of things to it, lol). With poetry, the author writes it and 4 readers may get 4 different interpretations out of it. There’s more room for choice on the reader’s part of what the author truly means. However, with spoken word, there is little room for ambiguity. Take the following lines for instance:

The sky sleeps with

Royal blankets of blue hue

It’s aura is inviting

Just like the thought of you

Just reading this, you can take it in several different ways. True, you could possibly be able to conclude that there is a warm feeling of the sky in comparison to a special person. But with spoken word, you probably would be able to really know what is meant by this stanza. Depending on if the tone is comical, dark, quirky, aggressive or soft-spoken helps convey the intended message. I have recently started getting into spoken word more and I actually enjoy it. But if I had to choose between the 2, I am a poet first. Don’t get me wrong, there are awesome poets whose spoken word delivery is just as meaningful. But I love giving someone a piece of my work and letting them draw their own conclusions. I will say though that with any craft, you should surround yourself with like-minded people. I think poetry is no different. I get some of my most creative peauxetic (poetic) thoughts right after I leave a spoken word event. Just being around that energy is something that’s very exciting and inspiring.

Which do you prefer, poetry or spoken word? Is there even a difference? Check out the clip below of Lauryn Hill reciting a poem called “Motives and Thoughts”…..great piece and she’s really speaking truth here. On another note, she really needs to make a comeback. Her music is missed .

2012 Grammy Predictions

In case you didn’t know, the 2012 Grammy Awards will be airing tomorrow night (along with the new season of Celebrity Apprentice…..love that show, lol). As usual, there is the usual snubbed talent- this year it’s Jill Scott. I don’t understand that one because she definitely deserves her share of nominations (and wins). But there are also some very well deserving nominees here as well.

I won’t lie, I’m not interested in all of the categories, but there are a few that I have my own predictions on who the winner will be.

Who do you think will win?

Record of the Year

  • Rolling In The Deep- Adele
  • Holocene- Bon Iver
  • Grenade- Bruno Mars
  • The Cave- Mumford & Sons
  • Firework- Katy Perry

*My bet is on Adele for this one. Not only has she been extremely hot this year, she actually has the best song in this category. But something is to be commended for explosives this year….as “Grenade” and “Firework” could be strong contenders too.

Best Rock Album

  • Rock N’ Roll Party Honoring Les Paul by Jeff Beck
  • Wasting Light by Foo Fighters
  • Come Around Sundown by Kings of Leon
  • I’m With You by Red Hot Chili Peppers
  • The Whole Love by Wilco

*This one could be tricky, but I think Red Hot Chili Peppers will get it for I’m With You. All of the groups Grammy wins have been in the Rock category, so they are somewhat of a shoe in. But the Foo Fighters have also proved longevity and could surprise us.

Best R & B Album

  • Chris Brown – F.A.M.E.
  • El Debarge- Second Chance
  • R. Kelly- Love Letter
  • Ledisi- Pieces of Me
  • Kelly Price- Kelly

*I honestly think this category will be between R. Kelly and Chris Brown…with Chris Brown as the winner. Considering what happened with him and Rihanna 3 years ago, almost the same night, some may think this is impossible. But I have to admit, he did put out a good CD with F.A.M.E.

Best Rap Performance

  • Look At Me Now – Chris Brown, Lil Wayne & Busta Rhymes
  • Otis- Jay Z & Kanye West
  • The Show Goes On- Lupe Fiasco
  • Moment 4 Life- Nicki Minaj & Drake
  • Black and Yellow- Wiz Khalifa

*As much as it would be cool to see Lupe Fiasco take this one home (it’s the only song here that really has a good message), I think Jay Z and Kanye will take this one home. A win for them would be ironic considering Jay Z once boycotted the Grammys.

On a sad note if you haven’t heard, we also lost one of the best voices ever in music tonight, Whitney Houston. May she rest in peace and check out her 1994 Grammy performance of the massive hit, “I Will Always Love You”.
