Call Me Two Faced

Two-faced head fire and ice statue

Two Faced.  This term is mostly used in a negative fashion. A person who is “two-faced” is generally described as back biting, insincere, saying one thing and doing another or just a flat-out liar. You may have heard talk about these kinds of people in conversation, on reality TV or from your own personal experiences. So why would anyone want to ever be two-faced? If the definition of this term holds such a negative connotation, you would think that we would all run from it. Well, would you be even more surprised if I told you I am two-faced? Yes, the very thing that people snare their noses up at, I am. Some of you may be scratching your head now and thinking, “He’s not to be trusted”. Trust is sometimes relative to personal experiences so if that’s your opinion, I’ll take that. But here’s a few reasons why I’m two-faced…

First, let’s take a look at the definition again. It basically means acting like something you’re not based on the persona you’ve shown the world. But wait, isn’t that all based on perception? Many people take me to be a friendly, nice guy who never lets anyone or anything get under his skin. But the minute I do get angry or upset, it’s the end of the world. And by definition…I’m what? Two faced.  Yes, I have displayed a cool, calm demeanor and when I don’t act accordingly to people’s standards, I’m labeled as two-faced. Or what about my taste in music? I can listen to T.I., Ludacris, but also P!nk and Red Hot Chili Peppers too. Does it make me two-faced that I can relate to people in different ways based on shared experiences and interests? If so, then call me two-faced. I’m guilty as charged. …

True, no one wants to be called two-faced in a negative sense. No one would take pride in being called a liar or deceitful. But in those cases, it usually boils down to the person on the receiving end feeling like the “two-faced” offender has hoodwinked them. Could it just be we don’t always know people as well as we think we do? Could we have jumped to conclusions that were only backed by emotion and not pure facts? And here’s my favorite….if we accuse those who are two-faced of the same things we do ourselves, then doesn’t that technically mean we’ve connected with a kindred spirit? Lol….just a thought. If part of being two-faced means diverse tastes, abilities, experiences and friends, is it really that bad?

What do you think about the term two-faced? Has anyone ever referred to you as such? What do you believe makes a person two-faced?

It Stings So Good

Honey Bee

The time is approximately 6:50 am. Honestly, I’m tired and can feel my body slowing down. So I turn up the music a little louder. No…wait. Switch the song. Now I’m listening to “Give It Away” by Red Hot Chili Peppers. I’m in the zone now. But not for long, before I get interrupted. “Hey what’s up man?” I respond and say, “I’m cool….you?” I’m trying to keep the conversation short when he starts to motion with a two hand open gesture, looks at me with a confused expression and says “What happened!?” I respond, just as confused, and say, “Huh?” And here’s the kicker….”Man, you didn’t used to have that stomach, what happened?” WTH?! My mind is racing through several thoughts at once as I stare like a deer caught in headlights at this guy who’s got to be a good 50 pounds (and not muscle) larger than me. Is he serious? Does he know who he’s talking too? I quickly pull my private moment of enraged mental chaos together and say, “Yeah the holidays can really get you, can’t they?”

Have you ever noticed that people who don’t have their own lives together are the first ones to point out the wrong in yours? But that’s another blog for another day. Deep down, the real honest truth was the scenario that happened above while I was at the gym this week was a great thing. Did it sting a little? Yes. Did I like hearing it? No. But was he saying something I really already knew? Yep. Since Thanksgiving, I’ve been letting go and enjoying good food with family and friends. I say I’m only having one or 2 cheat days here and there, but truth be told, my diet doesn’t have the structure it used to. And I can feel it. Sometimes you need that one good punch in the gut (figuratively speaking) to get your act in gear. The truth is, I know I’ve been slacking but I haven’t quite done all I can to combat it. So, even though that guy’s comment irritated me, it was the motivation I needed.

Maybe your motivation is not needed in the workout or health department. Maybe you’re already where you need/want to be or could care less. But we all have an ugly truth that we know we need to fix, but just haven’t made it over the hump to changing it yet. Most of the time, we are not afraid of failing, but afraid of the responsibility of success. There is no accountability needed to be mediocre. And isn’t it amazing how the tactless delivery of words from a stranger resonates with us? Don’t get me wrong, friends and family can tell us the same things with love, but sometimes it takes that unknowing spirit to really drive the point home. The next time someone stings you with words or deed, don’t think about the pain of the sting, but think about how good it feels. That may have been just what you needed to take you to the next level.

Say What??? The Golden Make Believe

Lately I’ve been searching for new music that has a fresh style that’s not really out right now. Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy some of today’s popular and mainstream music, but I also like to listen to music most people may not initially try out. Speaking of popular music, my first time hearing Santigold was on Drake’s song “unstoppable”, which also features Lil Wayne. This song has been on my iPod for a long time and I because really interested in who the girl was singing the hook on the song.

If you remember the song,  ”Paper Planes” by MIA (also featured in the movie Slumdog Millionaire), then you have a taste of what Santigold sounds like. I found Santigold’s new CD, Master of My Make Believe on iTunes recently. It was only $7.99, and I liked several of the songs I previewed from the CD, so I decided to buy it. And I’m glad I did. Although some of the productions and lyrics are a little out there, I can respect that at least she’s coming with something different and refreshing to the table. Master of My Make Believe‘s first track, “Go!” featuring Karen O, is a highly addictive song that makes you feel like you’re inside a Legend of Zelda video game.  This song is extremely catchy and very upbeat. Another interesting song on the CD is “The Keepers”. And if you thought the song was a little different from what you’re used to, check out the video below

Santigold is an artist who is an eclectic mix of many elements: some pop, some Reggae, some dance and some conscious. Only 2 CD’s in, she already has a confidence of a veteran artist. “Disparate Youth” is an inspirational track that’s one of the stand outs on the CD. It’s quite comical and interesting when Santigold reveals part of her raunchy side on the tracks “Freak Like Me” (I could easily hear Gwen Stefani on this track) and “Look At These H%$&”.  However, “Freak Like Me” has a concept that’s a little different from what its title suggests. In one the verses, she says, “You want you never stop/You need the money/You look good in Photoshop/Sunny”.

For anyone that’s looking for some thought-provoking music with interesting production, you should definitely check out Santigold’s Master of My Make Believe. Also, make sure to check out the video at the opening of the post, where I’m discussing song lyrics and what they really mean, including a track from today’s review of Santigold.

2012 Grammy Predictions

In case you didn’t know, the 2012 Grammy Awards will be airing tomorrow night (along with the new season of Celebrity Apprentice…..love that show, lol). As usual, there is the usual snubbed talent- this year it’s Jill Scott. I don’t understand that one because she definitely deserves her share of nominations (and wins). But there are also some very well deserving nominees here as well.

I won’t lie, I’m not interested in all of the categories, but there are a few that I have my own predictions on who the winner will be.

Who do you think will win?

Record of the Year

  • Rolling In The Deep- Adele
  • Holocene- Bon Iver
  • Grenade- Bruno Mars
  • The Cave- Mumford & Sons
  • Firework- Katy Perry

*My bet is on Adele for this one. Not only has she been extremely hot this year, she actually has the best song in this category. But something is to be commended for explosives this year….as “Grenade” and “Firework” could be strong contenders too.

Best Rock Album

  • Rock N’ Roll Party Honoring Les Paul by Jeff Beck
  • Wasting Light by Foo Fighters
  • Come Around Sundown by Kings of Leon
  • I’m With You by Red Hot Chili Peppers
  • The Whole Love by Wilco

*This one could be tricky, but I think Red Hot Chili Peppers will get it for I’m With You. All of the groups Grammy wins have been in the Rock category, so they are somewhat of a shoe in. But the Foo Fighters have also proved longevity and could surprise us.

Best R & B Album

  • Chris Brown – F.A.M.E.
  • El Debarge- Second Chance
  • R. Kelly- Love Letter
  • Ledisi- Pieces of Me
  • Kelly Price- Kelly

*I honestly think this category will be between R. Kelly and Chris Brown…with Chris Brown as the winner. Considering what happened with him and Rihanna 3 years ago, almost the same night, some may think this is impossible. But I have to admit, he did put out a good CD with F.A.M.E.

Best Rap Performance

  • Look At Me Now – Chris Brown, Lil Wayne & Busta Rhymes
  • Otis- Jay Z & Kanye West
  • The Show Goes On- Lupe Fiasco
  • Moment 4 Life- Nicki Minaj & Drake
  • Black and Yellow- Wiz Khalifa

*As much as it would be cool to see Lupe Fiasco take this one home (it’s the only song here that really has a good message), I think Jay Z and Kanye will take this one home. A win for them would be ironic considering Jay Z once boycotted the Grammys.

On a sad note if you haven’t heard, we also lost one of the best voices ever in music tonight, Whitney Houston. May she rest in peace and check out her 1994 Grammy performance of the massive hit, “I Will Always Love You”.
