Miss Keri Baby Returns

Ludacris, Keri Hilson, & Far East Movement Help Bing And DoSomething.org Celebrate The Bing Summer Of Doing At Osborne High School

4 years ago, Keri Hilson was being blasted in every car stereo, night club and iPod  as she boldy stated what turned her off and turned her on with the Lil Wayne assisted single, “Turnin’ Me On”. Her debut album, In A Perfect World…. also went on to spawn the hits “Slow Dance” and “Knock You Down” with Kanye West & Neyo. Production wise, she couldn’t have been set up more favorably. With Timbaland and Polow Da Don on board for majority of In A Perfect World…, it couldn’t help but be amazing. Ironically, some of the best songs on the CD (“Intuition”, “Tell Him The Truth” and “How Does It Feel”) weren’t lifted as singles. Overnight she was the “it” girl of R & B and quickly released her second album, No Boys Allowed in 2011. That CD featured the platinum prissy anthem “Pretty Girl Rock”. No Boys Allowed was a very solid CD in my opinion and even better than its predecessor. But, somehow Keri Hilson’s overall presence in the music industry just doesn’t seem as big as it should be to me (especially considering her stellar music).

But if you think she’s just a singer, then think again. Many people don’t know that she’s actually been writing songs for years. That’s where the real money is at, and with a net worth of over $25 million, she’s definitely not hurting for anything. But there have been rumors of her working on a new CD for a few months now. She has confirmed through various tweets that she is hard at work on a new CD that will be released later this year. Timbaland and Polow Da Don will handle the majority of production again and she’s probably in the studio now as I’m typing this. Then there’s the Beyonce drama she’s been involved in lately. Though things are just now coming to a head, as far back as the 2008 remix of “Turnin Me On”, she sang, “She can sing, but need to move it ‘to the (left)’ / She need to go have some babies / She needs to sit down, she fadin’… / Go ‘head and tell them folks how long I been writing your songs / I been puttin you on, just check the credits.” She denies this was ever about Beyonce, but come on now. This seems to be too big of a coincidence. Nevertheless, it looks like Beyonce has at least taken Keri’s advice on having babies.

Are you a fan of Keri Hilson? Will she finally get the recognition she deserves with her 3rd album? Will you be buying when her album drops this year?

Check out these Keri Hilson throwbacks.

Bilal’s Surreal Love

Bilal

Bilal is one of the most underrated artists…..period. Chances are that even if you don’t know his name, you’ve heard his voice before. He was featured on Lupe Fiasco’s “How Dare You”, from his latest project, Food & Liquor 2….and Erykah Badu’s infectious groove with Lil Wayne, “Jump Up In The Air (And Stay There)”.

On February 26, 2013, he released his long-awaited CD, A Love Surreal. If you haven’t heard it yet, you definitely need to add this to your collection. 1st Born Second is my favorite CD from him, but this one is still top-notch and has a mellow feel to it. On “West Side Girl”, you can hear his Prince influence. But he still makes the song funky and creative in his own way. This is definitely one of my favorite tracks from A Love Surreal. Check it out below…

Also, here’s a throwback from  his 1st Born Second CD. This song is called “Love It” and was one of the singles from the CD. Do you remember this one? 12 years later and this song still sounds as great as it did when it was first released.

Bump It Or Dump It? Jessie J: Who You Are

Jessie J

Before I get into my thoughts on this song, let me first say that it’s been out since 2011. So this one is a bit of a throwback by default. I’ve heard of Jessie J but never paid attention to any of her songs until I was forced to. I heard her song, “Who You Are” while I was waiting for P!nk to come on stage for The Truth About Love Tour (check out today’s earlier post, “P!nk Groupie Love”).  I had never heard the song before but her voice made me pay attention. I later found out exactly who she was and looked her up online. I remember seeing her album cover now, but I must say I’ve been sleeping on her voice. Check out the slightly depressing/disturbing video of “Who You Are” below from Jessie J. Am I the only one in the dark about her? I’m not sure if I would go out and buy her CD, but she sounds amazing on this song.

What do you say? Would you Bump It Or Dump It?

Johnta Austin: Turn It Up (Throwback Song of the Week)

If you don’t know Johnta Austin as a singer, you definitely know some of the hit songs he’s written artists like Mariah Carey (“We Belong Together”) and Mary J Blige (“Be Without You”). He has tried his hand at singing before and is actually a good singer in my opinion. This year he has released a few tracks here,  including a track with Trey Songz called “Never Enough Time”. Now he’s on the brink of releasing a new mixtape in December titled Love. The first single from that project is “What A Feeling” featuring Jermaine Dupri. Although this song and some of the other unreleased ones are pretty good, there’s one that sticks out the most to me. “Turn It Up” was released in 2006 and was one of my favorite R & B songs that year. The song is a feel good track that gives props to just about every relevant R & B artist and what he would do to their songs. Check out this throwback song that may be the first listen for many of you. You’ll see producers Jermaine Dupri and Bryan Michael Cox make cameos in the video too.
