P!nk Groupie Love

Pink Tour 12

Dear Music Lovers,

Alecia Beth Moore a.k.a. P!nk can really do no wrong in my eyes. If you’ve followed the music section of my blog for a while, then you know that I’m a little biased when it comes to her. Ok, maybe a lot of biased. My girlfriend likes P!nk a lot too (not quite as much as I do though, lol) so I decided to take her to the concert in Dallas for her birthday. We both expected a great show, but I think I can speak for everyone in the venue by saying that she exceeded everyone’s expectations. She opened the show with “Raise Your Glass” as she literally shot out of the bottom of the stage harnessed to several bungee chords. The opening was such a big production that it made me wonder how she could top it with her finale. But within 20 minutes of the show, that thought was quickly shot down as she seemed to top it with each song.

There are artists who are great performers and artists who are great singers. P!nk is a rarity as she does both extremely well…..often at the same time. Conceptually, her show is hilarious, thought-provoking, technologically advanced, and acrobatic. There were several heart-shaped screens in the background that could have very easily just displayed her music videos for the fans to see. But no, she decided to take the hard road by including skits, cartoons, and even video game simulations. Plus, there are very few acts that can sing and dance, without lip syncing. On “Sober”, the first instance we ever saw of P!nk flying through the air like a circus show, she shocks fans at her live show. While she sings (no lip syncing) suspended inside a giant circular cage, she decides to climb out and move across the outer surface….with no chords attached (at least not that I could see). Name a female artist that can do that. Tired of thinking???? I’m not surprised.

Pink Tour 11

Although she didn’t sing one of her biggest hits, “Don’t Let Me Get Me”, she pulls out virtually every other hit that you almost forget it. Her medley of her early hits “There You Go”, “You Make Me Sick”, and “Most Girls” was one of the highlights of the show and features P!nk nailing some complicated choreography. All of this despite making fun of her dancing skills right before she performed one of my favorite (and surprisingly not as popular) songs, “Leave Me Alone (I’m Lonely)”. She slows things down a bit for a highly sexed intro to the song “Try” which caught me off guard since that isn’t a sexual song. But who cares? It’s P!nk and it just added color to the show, lol. She performed one remake, “Wicked Game” by Chris Isaak, which she made more memorizing than the original. On “So What” she literally flies over the entire crowd of thousands of fans. By the time she closes the show with the famous move of her lowering herself in water and spinning while suspended in the air, the crowd still wants more. But I guess it would be cruel to expect her to still perform while being soaked in water. If you’ve never seen P!nk in concert, you’re truly missing out.

Sincerely,

The P!nk Groupie

P.S. Who are you most excited to see in concert soon? There’s a little bit of something for everybody. Is it Alicia Keys, Maroon 5, Rihanna, or Beyonce? What’s the best concert you’ve ever been too?

The AMAs Turn 40 Years Old

Ok, so I originally had a different post for the song of the week for today, but I’ll scrap it for next week now. If you got a chance to watch the American Music Awards last night, then you know it was full of surprises….and some obvious wins thrown in there too. Here are my thoughts on the best performances of the night…

#4 Stevie Wonder: Medley and Tribute to Dick Clark

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SK295QUwyOY

You just really can’t say anything bad about Stevie Wonder. His music and influence are timeless. Plus he has such a great energy. In honor of Dick Clark’s legacy with the AMAs, Stevie Wonder was definitely a perfect fit. He did high energy and soulful renditions of hits “My Cherie Amour” and “You Can Feel It All Over”. The whole place was on their feet and rightfully so as they remembered Dick Clark and watched on in amazement as Stevie Wonder wowed the crowd.

#3 Swizz Beatz Featuring Chris Brown and Ludacris: Everyday Birthday

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odDUXy6fzXM

Swizz Beatz has always been one of my favorite producers. And like so many of them, they like to dabble in rapping and singing themselves. The good part about it is he has the smarts to enlist some music heavy weights to help him pull it off.  Swizz Beatz, Chris Brown and Ludacris teamed up to perform the thumping, addictive track “Everyday Birthday” from his upcoming mixtape, Limitless. As if the song isn’t fire enough, the 3 of them killed this performance and wish the AMAs a happy 40th in style.

#2 P!nk: Try

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_XCuEFX3XQ

Anyone that has follows my site knows I may be a tab bid biased when it comes to P!nk….just a little bit, lol. I truly think her talent is unparalleled and she delivers yet again on this performance. Who else can come back with a body this hot after a baby, be tossed around a stage and actually sing live (no lip syncing here) all at the same time??? Leave it up to P!nk to save the day. “Try” wasn’t initially one of my favorites on her The Truth About Love CD, but this performance (a spiced up replica of the music video) makes me like it more.

#1 Psy: Gangnam Style (with Special Guest MC Hammer)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qlUyF6q0zKg

First off, let me say that I’m not hating by any means by what I’m about to say. I think “Gangnam Style” is a really cool song, but some of the moves in it are not new, lol. Now that that’s out the way, I have to admit that Psy put on an outstanding show of the hit song……but MC Hammer was the real show stopper here. He danced harder than the background dancers….and he’s got to be almost 50, if not over it.  He really hasn’t missed a beat at all. “Too Legit Too Quit” was mixed in with the “Gangnam Style” track and Psy jumped right in with MC Hammer. Too legit it was….

Those were my favorite performances. What were yours? Did your favorite artists win?

I Said I Never Would….

Fried crawfish and a baked potato. This is what I usually get when I go to my favorite restaurant, Pappadeaux. I almost get offended when they give me a menu, lol. “What do I need that for???” I think you all probably know by now that I love food. When I have a favorite thing in any facet of my life (including food), I can go overboard with it sometimes. Tradition and habits are sometimes good, but  if we keep doing the same things over and over again, are we really living? I’ve begun to think more about turning 30 soon. No I’m not rushing my life away, but I’m 27 now and it will be here before I know it. I just don’t want to look up one day years later and realize I always played it safe, didn’t take any risks and only stuck to the things I liked.

Here are a few things that I took a leap of faith on that have all turned out to be positive for me.

Not Your Average Frat Guy

I never really grew up feeling like I was fit to be a fraternity guy. A lot of the reasons I would hear why people joined just didn’t seem to apply to me. I never had a longing to be a part of an in-crowd (maybe cause I’m an only child) either. But during my freshman year in college, I kept noticing that many of the guys around me who were helpful and mentors just happened to be Alphas. I thought, hmmmm….there may be something more to this that I should look into. Almost 8 years later, I’m so honored to be a member of this brotherhood and organization.

My favorite line jacket I had made when I was in college...

Taste This…

I used to be one of those people who you couldn’t pay to eat sushi. My first time trying it was last June during a happy hour at work. Surprisingly, I loved it! For now I’m just sticking to the California and Shrimp Rolls (or anything cooked). I haven’t graduated to the raw sushi yet, lol. Baby steps…I accidentally ate Rainbow Sushi once with raw fish and it actually wasn’t bad. I think it’s just the thought of consciously eating raw fish that gets to me. Now you can’t keep me out of Ra Sushi, a restaurant in Plano, TX. I like it so much, it’s where I had my book signing event for my poetry book, Blurred Vision!

RA Sushi...one of my new favorite restaurants.

To Be Or Not To Be Bald?

My hair started thinning when I turned 25. As much as I wanted to deny it, I knew that I eventually had to do something. And Rogaine was not an option for me, lol. I contemplated going bald for over a year before I actually did it. But I was nervous about how I would look bald. But on August 14, 2010 I decided to go for it. I’ve been keeping the bald look ever since and other than having to shave every other day, I love it. I miss having hair sometimes, but not enough to keep it and let it be thin.

Back when I still had hair....

Me with no hair, about a year ago....

So what are you trying that’s new? Or are you just going through the motions doing the same ‘ole thing, day in and day out? What you said you would never do, just might be the best thing for you.
