Get Loose With The Blue Goose Diablo

I just discovered Blue Goose a few months ago. Since then, it has become one of my new favorite Tex Mex restaurants. Recently, I decided to try one their margaritas called The Diablo. I know; sounds pretty scary. However, isn’t it fascinating that a margarita is such a year round adult beverage. When was the last time you heard someone say, “It’s just too cold to have a margarita today”? Never.

Let’s get back to The Diablo though. It’s Blue Goose’s award-winning, classic margarita, mixed in with a potent red sangria swirl. I’m not exactly sure why The Diablo has a limit of two per person. Nevertheless, it’s worth the one glass or two to indulge in. The great thing about this drink is it has just the right ratio of tartness to sweetness. Plus, you can taste the alcohol without it being overpowering.

The price point for The Diablo is $10 and it comes in a slender, medium-sized glass. The Diablo may not taste as dangerous as its name suggest, but it easily dodges disappointment. If you find yourself at a Blue Goose restaurant, you should definitely give it a try!

Bottoms up….it’s Thirsty Thursday!

The 12 Days Of Crumble Giveaway

I can’t believe we are just 12 days away from the close of 2018. This year has definitely been a whirlwind to say the least. This has also been one of the most creative years for me in terms of writing. It’s funny how life’s trials can push you to do things you didn’t think were possible. I wrote my latest book, Eleven: Things We Never Said, completed my third novel, When The Cookie Crumbles and wrapped up a novella (which will be out in 2020) all in 2018. I have a few other things I’m working on, but I’ll reveal those as the time gets closer.

Today, I am launching a 12 day contest that will end on New Year’s Eve. I’m so grateful for all of the support I’ve gotten for my writing and publishing over the years. I want to give something back. For those that don’t know, my first novel’s (Fortune Cookie) release was pretty unconventional. I used Kickstarter to fund it, added backers names to the book and some people even had characters written into the book based on their real lives.

So, here are the rules to the contest for the next 12 days:

Make sure you grab a presale copy of my new poetry book, Eleven: Things We Never Said (click the title link to purchase). However, if you already have a copy, just skip to the next part 🙂

Tell me which character from Fortune Cookie or No Cream In The Middle is your favorite and why.

So, if you’ve completed the first two steps then you already have a free copy of When The Cookie Crumbles coming your way in April of 2019. Plus, I’ll list your name in the acknowledgments page. Whoever gives the best response for their favorite character will also have a character named after them in the novel.

Let’s go!!!

Things We Never Said….Until Now

Well, here it is. I keep saying this is the best and worst book I’ve ever written. Our darkest moments give us the best inspiration…which is exactly what happened here. However, the events that led to the writing of the book alone were difficult enough to wrap my brain around. Honestly, Eleven: Things We Never Said almost didn’t see the light of day. I thought it would be too personal for me to talk about a huge part of my life in a book for everyone to read.

This book was not written to air my dirty laundry. I did not write this book to try to sway people to take sides. There is no need for that. This book’s primary purpose was for me to purge through some feelings I was having as a result of the big D word. The elephant in the room that at times I didn’t want to face head on. Divorce. My secondary reason for releasing Eleven: Things We Never Said was to help other people, especially men, who may be going through a breakup or divorce.

Look around or think to yourself about how many books there are about divorce from the male’s perspective. Still thinking? Well, try thinking about it from the aspect of poetry. I know…you’re probably still trying to find one in your mental Rolodex (that thing today’s younger millennials know nothing about). My sincere hope is that everyone who reads this book gains some nugget(s) they can keep and apply to life, relationships and even learning more about themselves.

Here’s a sample of one of the poems called, “Syrup”

It’s dripping down my chin
My tongue peruses my upper lip
As I savor the flavor
And the slow roll down my neck
I don’t bother to wipe it off
Let it stay right there
Elated to have you right there
It’s a nectar sweeter than anything
My taste buds have ever experienced
I don’t mind getting a little messy in it
Because the best things in life
Hardly ever come clean….

They Didn’t Know….But Now We Do

This time of year is filled with holiday music celebrating the Christmas season and the birth of Jesus. You may recall the review I did of John Legend’s A Legendary Christmas collection. In keeping with the cheerful holiday theme, there is another new tune that you need to add to your playlist. John Patrick Adams, songwriter and producer, has just released a new song entitled, “They Didn’t Know”. The song features rousing vocals from singers Rachel Cotton and Regina Williams.

The song has an upbeat, victorious feel and depicts the the story of the birth of Jesus. Imagine being around during that time and witnessing the miracle of Jesus. The track and the lyrics have an infectious quality that lifts your spirits. I’ve been keeping this one on repeat ever since its release. If they knew who He would become, would they have bowed down and worshiped Him?  We have that chance to do so now, so let’s take advantage of it.

Check out “They Didn’t Know” below and stream/purchase it all digital media outlets, including Spotify, Tidal, Google Play and iTunes. Plus, check out some of John’s other recent singles, including “I’m Amazed” and “My Everything” as well.

A (John) Legendary Christmas

Considering John Legend’s successfully decorated music career, it’s hard to believe that he just released his first Christmas album. A Legendary Christmas is a mix of traditional classics, sprinkled in with some original numbers. Oh and if that wasn’t enough, Raphael Saadiq was at the helm of the album’s production. Of course, it wouldn’t be Christmas without classics like “What Christmas Means To Me” and “Silver Bells”. Stevie Wonder, another musical legend, joins John Legend on the former track to offer a memorable reworking.

The best part about the album is John Legend serves up just enough originality without stripping the classic elements we love about Christmas music. “No Place Like Home” is a jazzy, original tune that sits comfortably next to the Christmas staples we know and love. He carries most of the weight of the album alone, other than an additional feature from Esperanza Spalding. She joins him on the rousing rendition of “Have Yourself A Very Merry Christmas”.

The album couldn’t have come at a better time; right on the heels of his Emmy win for his contribution and role to Jesus Christ Superstar Live In Concert. Only true Marvin Gaye fans may remember his Christmas song, “Purple Snowflakes”. John Legend definitely pays a fitting tribute to the song, with a dreamy, trumpet heavy reworking of it. “Wrap Me Up In Your Love” is a smooth, R&B infused original and standout on the album. Honestly, you can play the entire CD straight through. There hasn’t been a Christmas CD this enjoyable since CeeLo’s CeeLo’s Magic Moment

The Legendary Christmas Tour begins tonight in Madison Square Garden. John Legend definitely took his time to craft not only one of the best Christmas albums in recent years, but also one of his most solid efforts period. Legendary indeed.

Lessons From Broken Glass

Last week, I heard about a story on the news of a neighborhood restaurant robbery. Honestly, the fact that the robbery was near me was what made me even pay close attention to it. A 28 year old male decided that it would be a good idea to break into a restaurant early in the morning before they opened. He didn’t steal any cash, but he did take some of the family heirlooms hanging in the restaurant (along with other expensive items). In total, the restaurant owner suffered close to $10,000 in damages.

I could only imagine how confused and furious the restaurant owner must have been when he arrived at his place of business that morning. When the news reporter interviewed him, he was surprisingly calm. He did convey his feelings of frustration and anger. However, he showed no signs of a temper during the entire interview. In fact, him and his staff made light of the situation on their lunch menu that day. They were announcing that their chicken tortilla soup was back. Next to the menu item, they requested that customers just don’t break the glass to try to get it.

Could this man have just been playing it cool for the cameras? Absolutely. He didn’t have to though. In fact, it would have been less shocking to see footage of him being irate about the damage and investment lost for his business. He was truly an inspiration of how someone can take something bad and turn it around for their advantage. In a sense, it was (costly) publicity for his business.

I know I will be visiting his restaurant now, because of the news report. I admired his strength and optimism. How many of you would have been able to react the same way? I don’t think I could have. There’s definitely a lesson and a blessing in every broken glass situation. The question is are we open and willing to learn it.

25 Years of Doggystyle

Snoop Dogg has the kind of career longevity that most artists dream of. November 23, 2018 marked the 25th anniversary of his most prolific album to date, Doggystyle. This comes right off the heels of him recently receiving his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Although his subject matter may have been gangster related on his breakthrough debut, his delivery was calm and smooth. In fact, his demeanor sounded like he could care less if you even paid attention. Millions of people did in fact pay attention. His style of rap permanently changed the face of Hip Hop and Pop music.

“Gin and Juice” still insights pandemonium if it comes on in a club today. Thanks to the production of Dr. Dre and the syrupy flow of Snoop Dogg, they made an irresistible sound that couldn’t be denied. The album kicked off strong with the funkadelic inspired “G Funk Intro”. “Tha Shiznit” and “Lodi Lodi” were fan favorites just like songs like the not so radio friendly, “Ain’t No Fun (If The Homies Can’t Have None)”. Mariah Carey even sampled the latter six years later on her hit “Heartbreaker Remix” with Da Brat and Missy Elliott.

How could we go without mentioning “Who Am I (What’s My Name)?” By 1994, it was clear we would be knowing Snoop Doggy Dogg’s (before the name change) name for many years to come. That song still remains one of the most easily recognizable tracks in Hip Hop history. However, songs like “Murder Was The Case” squandered any suggestions of music industry gimmicks to sell records. He lived the life that he rhymed about.

Doggystyle also launched a platform for then up and coming artists like the late Nate Dogg, Warren G and Tha Dogg Pound. Snoop Dogg has also consistently inserted comedic elements into his music. This is evident on tracks like the R&B/Soul infused “Doggy Dogg World”. All it takes is one trip down memory lane to remember the colossal influence of Doggystyle. Snoop Dogg is that cool uncle of Rap, whose style can’t be duplicated or imitated….even 25 years later.

Mariah Carey: Should We Proceed With ‘Caution’?

I guess we can’t quite call it a comeback. After all, Mariah Carey has been here for years. In fact, her career has been so prolific that she has recently been nominated in the 2018 Songwriters Hall Of Fame (along with Missy Elliott). She’s arguably the biggest selling female artist of all time. Her range is still unmatched by any of today’s current female pop superstars. However, she had her share of low moments, including a recently broken engagement and lackluster sales for last studio album, Me. I Am….The Elusive Chanteuse.

The marketing push and even the title (Caution) for her first studio album in four years was a bold move. She started marketing the tour simultaneously with the album’s release (with the assumption that it would be successful). Looks like there is plenty reason for naysayers to proceed with caution here. Let’s take the teaser single, “GTFO” for instance. The song took a while to grow on me, in part because of the lyrics. I honestly wasn’t used to Mariah Carey toning down her vocabulary to simply say, “Get the f’ out”. Indubitably, it didn’t seem like her.  That’s the hook for the appeal though. She really has nothing to prove at this point.

On songs like “The Distance” she cleverly manages to capture 90s nostalgia, remain current and make your head bob all at the same time. Plus, the unlikely Ty Dolla $ign feature surprisingly works well. She reaches back to her own repertoire in “With You”, referencing her Bone Thugs N Harmony collab, “Breakdown”. She even teams up with Timbaland on one of the album’s standout tracks, “8th Grade”. Ever notice how Mariah Carey frequently references that young love, high school time period of her life?

Slick Rick stops by to join the party on “Giving Me Life”, another worthy track on Caution. Honestly, there isn’t a bad song on the album. Sure, “Portrait”, the album’s closer, may be a bit too sappy but she’s singing full out on it. Mariah Carey has actually laid down her whisper vocal chords. By the looks of the early album sales, her fans are glad about it. The Butterfly queen has delivered her best album since The Emancipation of Mimi. Enjoy……with caution.

A Toast To Brennivin For The Win

Thanks to great friends who travel in far away places, I tried a new drink this week. She was hosting a book club meeting for my novel, Fortune Cookie, and it was her recommended drink of choice. It’s called Brennivin. You may have already heard of it before, especially if you’ve been to Iceland (where it originated). She warned us that it was smooth, but had a kick. I tried a shot of it and her description was spot on. What makes it so good though?

Well, if you think you’ll be mixing this to make your favorite cocktail, think again. Brennivin is a clear, unsweetened schnapps that somehow tastes like black liquorice. Don’t like liquorice? Neither do I. Nonetheless, something about that faint flavor was aceptable with this drink. I can definitely see it pairing well with anything lemon or lime flavored. Ironically, another name for the drink is black death. Don’t worry. I lived to tell the story so you’ll be fine.

Here’s a bit of history behind the drink as well. It’s typically a special occasion alcohol shot. Also, it’s the traditional drink for the feast of Porrablot (named for the month of Porri of the historical Icelandic calendar). Basically, it’s a drink that’s meant for celebrations. Cheers…bottoms up. It’s Thirsty Thursday!

Plus, don’t forget to get caught up on my novel series, which started with Fortune Cookie. No Cream In The Middle is the second installment. The final story of the trilogy, When The Cookie Crumbles, will be released early next year. Send me a message or comment on the post to catch up on the series, for a special, discounted pricing.Â
