One Sour Tincup And A Lazy Dog

I recently visited Lazy Dog for the first time. Their food was great, including some amazing donut holes with Nutella. Who doesn’t like Nutella? Not to mention I had the best hush puppies I’ve ever tasted there. However, today is Friday Eve so you already know what time it is. Thirsty Thursday. I haven’t posted a drink review in a while, so I knew the next one had to be really good.

Lazy Dog‘s Tincup Whiskey Sour was my drink of choice. I hadn’t had a whiskey sour in a long time so this one really caught my eye. Honestly, the food was a good indicator that the drink would be great. I would have really been disappointed if it tasted….well, sour (in a bad way). One of the things I really appreciated about this drink was the presentation. In addition, it tasted amazing.

Most whiskey sours are a little sweet, but this one has just the right amount of kick to balance it out. This potent burst of liquid flavor consists of tincup mountain whiskey, sweet + sour, yuzu, bitters, fresh rosemary and meyer lemon foam. That’s not all. For those who are calorie conscious, one drink has just 200 calories. Trust me, this is one drink that won’t leave you sour; only glad that you tried it. Don’t be a lazy dog and allow your taste buds to experience drink asap.

I definitely will visit Lazy Dog again soon. I’m not sure what food I will order, but the Tincup Whiskey Sour will somehow be included.

Bottoms up….it’s Thirsty Thursday?

Mariah Carey: ‘Butterfly’ Is Officially Legal

Mimi a.k.a. The Elusive Chanteuse a.k.a. Mariah Carey has a lot to celebrate this week. First, she has a brand new single, “GTFO”. However, I’ll get to that a little later. She is also celebrating the 21 year anniversary of her classic album, Butterfly. Although it’s a bit disturbing how obsessed (pun intended) she became with butterflies after that era, that album was well worth the hype. Who could forget classics like “Honey”, “My All”, “Breakdown” and the lost opportunity album cut, “Babydoll”?

Despite Butterfly holding a special place in Mariah Carey’s heart as her personal favorite album ever, she hasn’t given up on recording new music. Now, back to “GTFO”. Yes, the acronym stands for exactly what you think it does. “GTFO” follows in the same vein as many Mariah Carey records in recent years. The song has great potential. Oh, but then the whispers creep in. She has one of the best voices in music history, yet she often resorts to a talk-singy-barely-audible melody. This trend has gone on for well over a decade now, minus a few flashes of old Mariah.

The song speaks about Mariah Carey calmly, yet sternly telling her love to leave immediately. The production and the melody are a nice contrast against the song’s point blank chorus. There are some moments that are reminiscent of 90s Mariah here, but the song really lacks a strong climax. On a brighter note, she looks amazing in the video. So much so that it makes you wonder if the whole point of the song was a secondary motive to flaunt her recent 50lb weight loss. Whatever the case, most artists can only daydream of having the legacy she has built in the music industry.

What are your thoughts on “GTFO”? What’s your favorite album of hers?

Eminem Gets Back To His Old Self On ‘Kamikaze’

He’s baaaackk!! Slim Shady a.k.a. Marshall Mathers a.k.a. Eminem dropped a surprise album last night, entitled Kamikaze. The album, executive produced by Dr. Dre, finds Eminem in rare form and that’s saying a lot for him. He slams everyone from Donald Trump to Charlamagne and Harvey Weinstein. His flows are tight as ever and he addresses naysayers who claim his record sales are down (“So you sold 10 million albums, eh? But you put out 10 million albums”). Let’s not discredit the fact that Kamikaze is his 10th solo studio album (if you don’t count his releases before 1999). Prior to its release, he has already sold over 100 million albums worldwide (not counting singles sales).

This is the Eminem we’ve been missing; taking heads off and taking names. 2017’s Revival was nothing to sneeze at. He even pokes fun of it on “Greatest”, with a Kendrick Lamar “Humble” esque yell,” Revival didn’t go viral”.  On “Lucky You”, featuring Joyner Lucas, he proclaims he’s back on his bull after seemingly falling off. He tries his hand at some of the recently trendy sounds of rap and sounds better than the Lil Yachtys of the world who specialize in it on the comical ode to trap music, “Not Alike”.

Of course, it wouldn’t be an Eminem album without some crazy, quirky relationship stories (“Normal”, “Good Guy” and “Nice Guy”) and hilarious skits (“Paul” and “Em Calls Paul” ). Plus, he throws in the title track for Marvel’s highly anticipated Venom to close out the album just for kicks. Much like Janet Jackson with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and Justin Timberlake with Timbaland, the Eminem and Dr. Dre brand is still untouchable. Dr. Dre’s tight laced production seems to fuel some intense inspiration for Eminem’s rhymes.

He’s not afraid to be vulnerable on songs like the deeply introspective “Stepping Stone”. Eminem names those who have passed on (including his D12 member Proof) and the demons he stills wrestles with as a result of it. He samples LL Cool J’s “Bad” on the occasionally grotesque and consistently brilliant title track, “Kamikaze”. Although he attacks the integrity of the Grammy nomination committee on “Fall”, something tells me he’ll be adding to his 15 Grammy Award tally next year. Kamikaze proves that nearly 20 years after his breakthrough The Slim Shady LP, there’s still only one real Slim Shady.

Kamikaze is available now on all digital outlets.

Janet Jackson Is Back With ‘Made For Now’

Janet Jackson has made one hell of a comeback in the last year. Then again, her influence has never really left. After a well deserved break with her new baby, Eissa, she returned with her first leg of the State of the World tour at the end of 2017. The tour is still in full force now, including a headlining stop at the Essence Festival last month. Now, she’s making waves again, with her new single and video, “Made For Now”, featuring Daddy Yankee.

“Made For Now” has a worldly, upbeat feel, with elements of African, Latin and Caribbean rhythms. The video is colorful, complete with several costume changes and dance sequences in the street. It reminds me of an updated version of her “Alright” music video. Daddy Yankee primarily serves as the hype man on the song, but his presence brings the energy up another level.

Although the song doesn’t forge any new songwriting heights (the chorus is a bit repetitive), it’s a feel good party. This type of song is perfect to ride out the rest of the summer and keep the positive vibes flowing. Hopefully, “Made For Now” is a prelude to a new studio album from Ms. Jackson. She made her first late night TV appearance in over 14 years on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon this past Friday. Check out the performance and the “Made For Now” music video below.

Aretha Franklin: 5 Little Known Facts About The Queen of Soul

On Thursday, August 16, 2018, the world lost one of its brightest stars in the music industry, Aretha Franklin. She was revered as the Queen of Soul and a woman whose voice could make the rafters shake. Her music has spanned several generations and her music career started when she was barely a teenager. I honestly didn’t believe it when I heard the news that she passed. Her attitude and personality was so strong, I thought it would be yet another hurdle she would have the victory over. Although she is gone physically, her legacy will live on forever. Here are 5 little known facts you may have missed about Aretha Franklin.

  1. Stevie Wonder was producing some new music for her. In fact, he specifically spoke about a song they were working on together called, “The Future”. Stevie Wonder wrote the song, but they were planning on singing it together.
  2. She has the distinct honor of being the first woman inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1987.
  3. She performed at three US presidential inaugurations (for Presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter). Donald Trump could have been the fourth, but it has been reported that Aretha Franklin turned down the invitation.
  4. She saved the 1998 Grammy Awards from being a huge disaster. She filled in as a last minute stand in for an ailing Luciano Pavarotti…..during the ceremony. It’s an even more amazing back story for one of her most critically acclaimed performances.
  5. Speaking of the Grammys, she won the first eight instances of the Best R & B Female Performance award. That category quickly became dubbed as the Aretha Franklin award.

Her vivacious personality, unmistakable voice and uncanny ability to resonate with her fans makes her a true queen. Here’s a look back at some of her biggest moments.

Justin Ruff Gives New Blue Moon

It’s rare to find genuine R&B music these days. This is why (with a few exceptions), I’ve been resorting to some 90s classics lately. However, I have been following Justin Ruff and his music for a couple of years. His brand of music never disappoints. So, I was excited to hear his latest single, “Every Blue Moon,” when it dropped this past Friday. This track quickly became one of my favorites of his.

The track creeps in with a bluesy, seductive feel that sounds like it could be a throwback, but still current all in one downbeat. I’m usually a fan of  songs with a good guitar riff and “Every Blue Moon” is well produced without overpowering Justin Ruff’s voice. The well placed vocal arrangements here really showcase his great singing ability as well. Thankfully, he doesn’t ruin the listening experience by adding in unnecessary runs and riffs.

The Cincinnati native croons, “Every blue moon, I just wanna be your lover”. Rick Stevenson swoops in and offers a clean rap verse that complements the song well, giving it a subtle street edge. “Every Blue Moon” follows Justin Ruff’s first single “Diamonds”, lifted from his upcoming EP, Harvey Ave. Justin definitely has some great music on his hands, after hearing these first two singles.

Is There Really A Perfect ’10’?

You get a 10. You get a 10. Everybody gets a 10.

Here’s The Backstory…

Last night I watched the TV show Beat Shazam. I started reading a book I’ve been trying to finish up. The TV was still on and the revamped dating show, Love Connection started to play. I got a little distracted from my reading watching the first segment of the show (before I turned off the TV). The first guy was a DJ/artist/software developer who was a little stuck on himself, with high standards.

One of the women was a clear stand out to me, looks wise, but he didn’t pick her. The woman he did pick rated him as a perfect ’10’. He rated her a ‘9’. Although she was flattered, her ego was noticeably bruised. He quickly tried to fix it by saying, “Well no one is a perfect 10. There’s always room for improvement.” She replied, “Oh, I get it. So a 9 is really a 10?”. Of course, he agreed (whether that’s what he believed or not).

Why Does It Matter?

Honestly, I could care less about the people’s love lives who were on Love Connection. Although the guy on the first segment was a bit of a jerk, he made a great point. Who really is a ’10’ in any aspect of life (physically, mentally or spiritually)? We all have flaws that we are trying to work towards, which is part of the beauty of being different. Society makes it difficult to believe that you perfect imperfections are fine just the way they are.

Of course, we should all strive to be the best versions of ourselves. Nevertheless, things like social media can make us compare ourselves to illusions that people create to make themselves feel more important. If you think you’re a perfect 10 in any area, chances are you may be a bit delusional. There is always room for greater. Love yourself in the phase you’re in as you strive towards being the best ‘you’.

Tell Em Why U Mad

Last Sunday, I had a bit of an embarrassing moment that happened to me. Most of my close friends and family know that Martin is one of my favorite sitcoms. I found a nostalgic, free Martin app a few months ago and I sometimes post memes and gifs from it. The app also has filters that you can add to your photos. One of them is the photo you see pictured above. Somehow, I accidentally sent that filter to several people on Facebook. My phone must have sent it while it was in my pocket. Soon, I had family and friends messaging me and asking if I meant to send the message. Thankfully, it was a good laugh and no damage was done.

However, this scenario reminded me of how many times we say things that can’t be so easily retracted. How many times have you been angry at someone and vented in person or in a text? It’s natural to be upset from time to time, but we should watch what we say. Those words we speak intentionally or accidentally can do irreversible damage depending on the person that receives them. Sometimes I type up an email draft or message and get it all out and then delete. I know, it sounds juvenile, but it works.

We are not perfect people. There will definitely be times that we lash out and can’t take our words or actions back. Sometimes it’s hard to exercise caution with our words when we know we have been mistreated. We feel we are justified in saying ugly things that leave a lasting stench in our relationships.  Being irate in the heat of the moment could create a lifetime of consequence that can’t be undone. U mad? Get it out. Release the tension. You need it. You deserve it. However, be careful how you do it.

A Double Twisted Mule On Tap

Last weekend, I had lunch with some friends at Twisted Root. I always enjoy their burgers, but decided to try out one of their drinks as well. I landed on the Twisted Mule. The drink is the restaurant’s play on the classic Moscow Mule. I took a gamble, because I’ve had as many good Moscow Mules as bad ones. Thankfully, the drink did not disappoint. Honestly, it was the best spin on a Moscow Mule that I’ve ever had. Apparently, the drink has been on their menu for quite some time. I’m just late to the party. However, I’m sure that those of you who have not tried are wondering what makes it so good. I’m glad you asked.

First of all, the drink is a combination of an Arnold Palmer and a Moscow Mule. The drink is extremely refreshing, especially in this brutal Texas summer heat. The Twisted Mule includes Aylesbury Duck Vodka, a scratch made tea syrup, ginger beer (which I’m slightly obsessed with) and fresh lemon. Sounds simple enough, right? The kicker is the drink is served on tap, not poured. Once I realized this, I was even more impressed with the taste and quality of the drink. Plus, an added bonus of drinking any variation of a Moscow Mule inspired drink means you get to look cool with a copper mug in your hand. Ok, maybe that last part is just me.

Trust me, if you’re a fan of the Moscow Mule, you will love this drink. It’s crisp, cool and uniquely created. Cheers to Twisted Root for making a drink that will now become one of my staples. Let me know if you’ve ever tried this drink or leave your recommendation for a new Thirsty Thursday drink you’ve tried recently.

Bottoms up. It’s Thirsty Thursday.

Chance The Rapper Drops 4 New Tracks

Chance the Rapper fans have been waiting on new music from him for quite some time. Sure, he has collaborated with everyone from John Legend to DJ Khaled. Oh and we can’t forget his much anticipated joint album with Childish Gambino. He even recently revealed that Kanye West would be producing a forthcoming 7 track album. While there is no concrete confirmation yet, he just simultaneously released four new songs. Looks like he will be dropping a lot of music in the coming months to make up for lost time. Coloring Book is merely two years old. In that short time, his career has skyrocketed. Chance the Rapper has become a mainstream success as an independent artist on his own terms.  So, this is the perfect time for him to release new music. That album still gets rotation in my playlists.

Work Out

This is a playful track that finds Chance the Rapper rap singing over gentle production. He leads off the song speaking about some of his set backs have turned into brighter days for him. He tells all his exes to “keep your shirt down” because he’s with his fiance now. The latter half of the song showcases more of his rap flow. This one is for all of those people who may be going through hard times, but specifically anyone who has moved on from a previous breakup.

65th & Ingleside

This one comes in with a bang, complete with layered percussion arrangements. Chance the Rapper recounts his humble upbringing and how he broke into the music business. He really showcases his unique niche style here that eventually made him a breakout star. Of all four tracks, this one is definitely my favorite. Chants in the background sing, “Everything is gonna be ok. Don’t you know, I made a way outta no way”.

I Might Need Security

This song starts off on a clearly explicit note, with a looped sample from Jamie Foxx’s classic I Might Need Security stand up special. Chance the Rapper still isn’t into signing contracts and he blatantly calls out racist ideals. At just 25 years old, he flaunts the wisdom and business prowess of someone well beyond his years. The sampled loop cheapens the song a bit after hearing it so many times. Nonetheless, it’s admirable to see Chance the Rapper still standing up for Chicago and his beliefs after achieving such crossover success.

Wala Cam

This is the only track of the four that features other artists (Supa Bwe and Forever Band). Chance the Rapper’s (and even the guest features) fiery verses are so on point here, that the annoyingly redundant “Wala Cam” chants are nearly irrelevant. Judging by this track and the others, his new music seems to have a bit more of a direct, yet playful vibe compared to some of the soulful tracks like “Blessings” and “Finish Line/Drown” from Coloring Book. Either way, I’m ready for more new music from a rapper who isn’t afraid to create his own lane.
