The Last Time I Saw You

I had lunch yesterday with some great friends I haven’t seen in a while. They were both doing well and looked happy. I always enjoy seeing great people being prosperous, because I feel like they deserve it that much more. As we caught up on each other’s lives and work, the topic came up about someone that we know. This person abruptly shifted their life to follow their longtime dream. Although I haven’t seen this person in quite some time, I thought about what an exciting feeling that must be. How many of us are willing to shake up our lives for the greater good of our future?

I think it’s fair to say that we have all dreamed about chasing something we’re passionate about. Maybe it’s starting a new business, going back to school or even starting a healthier lifestyle. That initial jump can be frightening. However, there are some people who just blindly go for the gusto. I admit that I am not always that person. I tend to over analyze, take a break, analyze again and then finally make a decision. The person that we all know decided to boldly make their dreams a reality.

Sometimes we lose contact with colleagues, mentors, past managers, friends and acquaintances. Are the people in your circle doing the exact same thing they were the last time you saw them? Have they made any new business ventures? Are they making progress towards bettering themselves physically, mentally or spiritually? Could they be right on the brink of trying something they have never done before? Those are the types of people I love to be around. Energy feeds off of more energy. Who is the energizer in your circle? Hopefully everyone around you is making intentional moves towards their destiny.

Wouldn’t it be awesome to have something new and inspiring to share with those people you haven’t seen in a long time? Don’t wait. Scratch that burning itch to accomplish your goals. Ignite the person you are intended to be, no matter how unconventional it may seem. Chances are, you will thank yourself later for it.

Leela James Did It For Love

Leela James has one of the smoothest, most sincere voices of our generation. Her music strikes with such a conviction that places the listener right in the center of her situation. She continues that formula on her latest release, Did It For Love. Her new album is quite refreshing in a time where substance is painfully lacking in today’s music. She’s currently on tour in support of her new album. After just one listen, I’m sure you’ll want to get your tickets.

Did It For Love is a well rounded Love 101 session. Leela kicks off the 40 minute set with the frustrated tune, “Hard For Me”. Here, she sings about a lover who won’t let his wall down to let love in. However, she flips the script on “Don’t Mean A Thing” and “Don’t Want You Back”. The former track is an uptempo, dance song that reminds us that actions speak louder than words. This is especially true when it comes to love. The former, “Don’t Want You Back” is a sexy, dismissive number that shuts down a man who lost his chance with her. She has moved on and has no signs of looking back. I can easily see this song being a successful single from the album.

Leelah James sings about faded love memories that she yearns for on the heartfelt, “I Remember”. Dave Hollister joins her for a worthy vocal pairing on the upbeat love song, “Good To Love You”. This one may remind you of R. Kelly’s “Step In The Name Of Love”. “There 4 U” has a throwback 70s style groove. There are many songs that promise a safe haven for love. However, when Leela James says it, you know that come hell or high water, she means it.

Although Leela James has a no nonsense persona, she gives major props when they are due. She isn’t afraid of randomly catering to her man, as evident on the beautiful ballad, “This Day Is For You”. She offers herself for love on the rousing “Take Me”. Meanwhile, “All Over Again” is a bare bones, soul stirring confession of love, backed with simple production of pianos and light drums. This is definitely one of my favorites on the album. “Our Love” kicks up the pace again with horns and an infectious melody that finds Leela singing about an incomparable love.

Leelah James closes out the 12 song set with the title track, “Did It For Love”. She admits that she’s possibly made some bad decisions (and good ones too) in the past, all because of love. There are few that can navigate through the waters of love as effortlessly as Leela James. So, here’s to another collection of her heart through song that will be in heavy rotation for quite some time.

Jaysyd Keeps It Lit On ‘Thanks For Nothing’

“Strike while the iron is hot”. This old saying is extremely appropriate in today’s music industry. Jaysyd has a strong grasp on this concept. His last EP, HER, hasn’t even been out for a year yet. He already has new music to offer. Jaysyd’s new mixtape, Thanks For Nothing, picks up where HER left off. However, there is a marked maturity heard in his new material. “Single”, the lead track, is a great example. He confesses that he prefers the single life to avoid getting his heart broken again. He’s scarred from his previous relationship, although he has plenty of women available at his beckoning call.

Jaysyd even charters new musical directions, with the pop and reggae influenced, “Find My Self”. This song’s vibe travels in a lane that suits him well, as he takes us on a journey of self reflection. “Love Me” has a similar Caribbean influence and has tremendous popular appeal. Who doesn’t want to be loved? “Feel Good” is a mid tempo track that finds Jaysyd playing Martin and he wants to work it out with his Gina. This track sounds different from most of the album, but it was an excellent choice to include to shake things up a bit.  Nonetheless, he manages to take out time to pay tribute to his mother on the touching conversation, “Mom’s Birthday”.

Thanks For Nothing definitely has its share of lyrically memorable moments. Take a listen to “Do Me” featuring E.Z. (the sole noted feature on the mixtape). He sings, “I had a girl screen shot my messages/So now, I take my time when texting shit”. His vocals pair well with the bass thumping, mid-tempo track. Jaysd gets more personal about his past relationship on “Do Better”, one of the best songs on the mixtape. “Proud” finds him digging even deeper though, as recounts an ultimatum given to him by his ex: her or the music. Sounds like he picked the better choice. “Dope” takes a detour from the hard lessons learned and steps into the bedroom. He croons about having the love potion over a hypnotic sounding track. This will definitely be one of the fan favorites.

Jaysyd isn’t afraid to let a woman know if she’s worthy though. He’s hesitant, yet hopeful on the slow groove, “FWU”. “Beat It Up” takes a page from R. Kelly’s “Feelin’ On Yo Booty”. However, Jaysyd adds in his own metaphors and makes the song his own. “Start Over” speaks about not wanting to begin again in love, or in this case friends with benefits gone wrong. The song even opens with a voicemail from an upset woman, before he goes into his side of the story. “Wet” is a no holds barred after dark invitation that is reminiscent of the Ghost Town DJ’s 1995 smash, “My Boo”. He takes one more look back to his past on “Only Fair”. He shares the honest feelings of wanting ex to feel miserable if she’s not with him. We have all been there before.

Jaysyd ends Thanks For Nothing on a dismissive note with “Nice To Know You”. The song is primarily backed with swift piano rifts, as he nonchalantly says goodbye to a woman that played too many games. Ironically, Thanks For Nothing was released on April Fool’s Day. There is no joke that he’s serious about continuously evolving his craft and releasing quality music. Make sure you check out the mixtape, which available at all major online retailers.

If These Chairs Could Talk

Many of us work long hours every day. People sit a desk, stand or either a combination of both. No one ever stops to think about the chairs though. They hold our weight, without complaint. Of course, the chair won’t ever talk back. However, the chair often gets to witness us at our lowest points. Sitting is more comfortable for some, than getting up and making things happen.

Here’s a poem from my new book, Stingrays, that speaks from the chair’s perspective. It’s ok to sit. Just don’t stay in one spot too long. No race in life was ever won by sitting down. So, we have to always be alert and ready to make the next best move for our lives. Also, don’t forget to pick up your copy of Stingrays HERE if you don’t already have it. Yes, it’s ok to sit while you read it.

If These Chairs Could Talk

Have you ever wondered

What the chair thinks?

How the chair feels?

After some of us have

Left its presence

That’s if we ever do

I imagine it would say

Something like this

These legs were never

Meant to hold you up forever

Yet you sit here day after day

Month after month

Year after year

Professing pointless resolutions

Go figure, I’m ruined

Over time I have evolved

To give you more spinal support

Improve your posture to just

Make more excuses

And cushion to make your

Complacency more comfortable

I no longer recognize myself

Or my worth until you take your seat

But there is a bright side to

All of this

I have evolved, yet

You have remained stagnant

In fact rolling backwards

Like those smiley face

Price cuts at WalMart

Into an ignorant abyss

What’s your worth now?

About a dollar and fifty six cents?

These legs have grown weary

And plead for you to one day

Some way, get off your ass

And make something of yourself

My existence is eroded

Nothing more than a mere excuse

To make your comfort zone

A lazy, nondescript throne

In Love With The (Vita) CoCo

I am 2 months sober and counting. Yep. Oh, did you think I was talking about alcohol? I meant pre work out drinks. I completed the Daniel Fast earlier this year. The fast (or temporary diet) consists of vegetables, fruit, legumes, grains and that’s about it. The first 3 days kicked my butt, especially because I couldn’t have caffeine. Needless to say, my morning workouts were more than a struggle. I was accustomed to drinking different pre workout drinks on my way to the gym in the morning.

However, the fast helped me break the dependency on the drinks. I always tried to find the most natural pre workout drink as possible. Nonetheless, most of them still include filler ingredients that aren’t good for us, creatine or high amounts of caffeine. Next week, I’ll share a great pre workout alternative I started using to help me wake up in the morning. For today’s post though, I want to introduce you to a secret that sustains my energy after the workout. Coconut water. Maybe it’s not a secret after all. Coconut water is nothing new. Plus, it’s naturally occurring.

I actually have only found one brand of coconut water that I enjoy – Vita Coco. Most of the other brands have a nasty aftertaste. Vita Coco has the secret down just right though. They even have flavors infused with pineapple and mango for those that need a sweet boost. Coconut water is packed full of nutrients, including antioxidants, amino acids, enzymes, B-complex vitamins, calcium, potassium, zinc and more. The nutritious drink is also a great go to for lowering blood pressure, headaches, hang overs, indigestion and of course, hydration.

Seems like instead of an apple a day keeping the doctor away, it should be a coconut a day.

Bottoms up….it’s Thirsty Thursday!

The First Jump Is The Hardest (Go!)

Today marks a very pivotal turn in my life. I started a new job at a new company one year ago today. Oh and it was a completely new industry for me too. The specifics aren’t necessarily important here. However, I turned down an opportunity for advancement in exchange for following my passion. Was I scared? Heck yeah! I played it cool, but deep down I wondered if I was making the right decision.  Now, standing on this side of 365 days, I know I did. I miss the people, my previous company and even the routine. The latter is what always seems to get us in the most trouble.

Why is it so hard to step outside of our comfort zones? Believe me, I’ve been there before. In fact, I was there a little over a year ago. Money, fear and familiarity can work to our detriment when any (or all) of those things prevent us from progressing. I finally reached a point where I had to leap off the cliff. The drop was frightening, but I had to have faith that I would land on my feet. Looking back, I have learned so much professionally within the last year. Learning stretches us and at times even exhausts us. Aren’t we supposed to evolve though? Many times we don’t want to rock the boat (even if temporarily flipping it over) to make our final destination.

Standing on this side of one year later, I have learned that progression comes at a cost. Are you willing to pay that cost to get where you claim you want to be? Although the first jump was the most difficult, it gets easier for every jump afterwards. I feel more empowered now to make unconventional leaps towards my future, even if that means removing myself from a comfort zone. The first jump won’t always be easy, but it will always be worth it. Are you ready to make that jump?

Smino Introduces Us To The Blkswn

Nelly made listeners sit up and take notice to St. Louis branded Hip Hop in 2000. He went on to become one of the greatest selling rappers of all time. However, other than Nelly, there haven’t been any huge Hip Hop stars to emerge from St. Louis since then. Smino, a.k.a Chris Smith, is poised to be the artist that makes fans pay attention to St. Louis again. The rapper/singer just released his debut album (following two EP releases), Blkswn, on March 14th. The release date is significant to Smino because 314 was his area code growing up.

He sings and raps too, which seems to have become a rapper’s requirement within the last decade or more. Thankfully, he does both very well. For those that haven’t heard of him before, they will surely remember who he is after listening to Blkswn. Smino delivers one of the most clever sexual innuendos of recent years with the catchy opener, “Wild Irish Roses”. He proposes to pull over while driving around town with his special lady to give her pick her some of those wild irish roses, among other things. His word play doesn’t let up on the lyrically dense “Maraca”. Smino compares his fans at live shows and ability to please women (making them both shake) to maracas. “Glass Flows” is one of the darker tracks, that recounts reasons why a past relationship failed. The song features smooth vocals from Ravyn Lenae.

“Netflix and Dusse” offers up one of the albums many high points. This is clearly a netflix and chill situation, but Smino adds his own twist with a little Dusse to sip on. The chorus is one of those witty, tongue twisters that will have you pressing rewind. One interesting point to note about his sole rap verse on the song is it was originally include on Big Sean’s “Living Single” track with Chance The Rapper. The official version is void of Smino’s verse. “Netflix and Dusse” proves that wasn’t the best decision.

“Anita”, featuring Jean Deaux, is also one of the album’s stellar tracks. This song was dropped as a teaser single preceding the album, which serves as a teaser. Smino celebrates his love for African American women. Songs like “Father Son Holy Smoke” demonstrate his lyrical ability that speaks well beyond his 24 years. Get in front of the crowd before everyone starts to take notice to Smino. His quirky, witty and entertaining style of rap-singing is a much needed break from Hip Hop’s current bad and boujee influenced rhymes.

Trey Songz Unleashes The Redundant ‘Tremaine’

Trey Songz has always been considered as R. Kelly’s musical nephew. At least that’s my take on him. Trey Songz has a lyrical prowess that’s smoother than many of his counterparts. However, the bulk of his catalog contains tales of breakups, makeups, sex, cheating and oh….more sex. His latest album Tremaine doesn’t leave room to expect anything different. The album starts off with a seductive intro titled “The Prelude”, before it transitions to a heartfelt plea for an ex’s return on “Come Over”. The latter could easily be single that gains him more of an adult contemporary fan base. Although songs lke “#1 Fan”, “The Sheets….Still”,  take the album’s worth two steps back, they aren’t enough to tarnish Tremaine‘s credibility.

“Nobody Else But You” feels like a backhanded compliment. Nonetheless, the is Trey Songz we’re talking about here. If anyone can pull that off he can. “Playboy” is a stellar number that finds him calling himself out for his promiscuous ways over a nostalgic 90s inspired track. Keith Sweat, eat your heart out buddy.  “Song Goes Off” proves yet again that Trey Songz wears the hat of regret well. This song is a smooth ballad that finds him trying to get an ex lover to admit she still loves him…in roughly 4 minutes or less.

The funky, slinky guitar groove of “She Lovin’ It” has a hint of rock inspiration and offers one of the high points on the album. “Animal”, cleverly placed right after this track, makes lions, tigers and bears sound so sensual. Remember R. Kelly’s song “Zoo”? This is a worthy, updated version of that. “1×1” and “What Are We Here For” are Tremain‘s strongest pop offerings. Although neither of the songs are necessarily my favorites, I can see them being big hits for him.

All in all, Tremaine offers little uncharted territory for Trey Songz. He has definitely matured over the years, but his core message is still intact.  Despite MIKExANGEL’s feature on “Games We Play”, the album is void of any features. This was actually refreshing to hear since Trey Songz can easily carry an album all on his own. Tremaine, b.k.a. Trey Songz, seems to live by the old adage, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. While this is true, I’ll be glad to see the day he decides to really break away from the mold.

Jussie Smollett Pushes The Envelope With ‘F.U.W.’

Empire returns to prime time TV tonight. The show’s fans have been eagerly anticipating the new episode. However, the real buzz is about Jamal’s new single. Wait. This song actually has nothing to do with Jamal. Jussie Smollett steps front and center into the spotlight to reveal a new “artistic expression” as he calls it. The song and its accompanying video is not a publicity stunt or a teaser for a new album. However, he clearly stands behind the song. He believe it’s a message that needs to be conveyed.

Jussie Smollett does not like Trump. Should I have said President Trump? Eh, for the sake of this blog, let’s just leave it at Trump. There is even one scene in the video where he rolls a bicycle over a plastic mask resembling Donald Trump. “Build a wall/It won’t keep us from loving each other/Rewrite the laws/You won’t keep us from loving each other,” he sings. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Jussie Smollett confronts issues like police brutality, immigration, the AIDS epidemic, LGBT rights and racism. Oh and he directed the poignant video himself.

“F.U.W.” does not reserve all of its sting solely for Trump. However, this is easily the smoothest and most blatant stand against the current presidential administration. Dare I say it, the song is an awakening, thought-provoking ballad that should be heard. Jussie Smollett may not have created this song for Empire ratings or personal gain. Nonetheless, people will definitely be talking about this video for a while.

So, what are your thoughts on “F.U.W.”? Do you think Jussie Smollett has gone too far?

Check it out for yourself below.

Who Pooped On Your Good Morning?

How much does it cost to say, “Good morning”? What pain does it cause to ask someone, “How is your day”? One of my biggest pet peeves is people who don’t speak. I dislike it so much that I will shame people into speaking. Yep, I said it. I do it all the time. Even to this day, I encounter people who never say utter a simple “hello” in passing. The killing part is many people make eye contact with you and keep on walking. Who does that? Apparently they do. I once broke someone down by repeatedly speaking to them until she finally spoke back. She even admitted that she was purposely avoiding speaking to me.

Ok, so what is the purpose of all this? We all have personal issues that hang on our sleeves wherever we go. We could be battling illness, depression, fatigue, or just waking up on the wrong side of the bed. But guess what? It’s NOBODY’S FAULT. Life’s trials don’t give us pass to act an ass. Period. I always hold a special admiration for people who are able to smile through their pain. Granted, it’s never easy to do. Everyone is entitled to have a bad day or two. However, a simple “good morning” could lift someone else’s spirit.

Contrary to popular belief, many of our struggles are not for us. Sometimes we have to go through hard times for everyone to witness. People hone in closer to see how we handle stress. Give people the opposite of what they wish to talk about. Keep your head up and smile sometimes. It just might lift someone up…..and ourselves in the process.
