RoseGold And Her Slick, Audible Melodies

RoseGold is an amazing singer and songwriter who hails from Baltimore, Maryland. Now she lives in Los Angeles, California. Her music is sultry, honest and unique. She was featured on Terrace Martin’s Grammy nominated album, Velvet Portraits (“Think Of You”). Plus, she has even written some songs from TLC’s upcoming new album. We talked about everything from being creative and heartfelt Aquarians (her birthday is February 6th), being unapologetic, how she got her name and her experience with TLC. Check out a piece of our interview below. Hear her music at https://soundcloud.com/MuvaGoldBlood.

Two of your songs are my favorites (though I love all your music). What are the background stories to “My Apology” and “Dayvon (Guns and Roses)”?

Thank you. Well, “Dayvon (Guns and Roses)” is about an experience with one of my best friends who is no longer with us. But he was my first boyfriend.  I wrote about our behavior and activity. He was trying to learn how to be a man. So, I was trying to support that, but like a little girl. I remember not wanting him to go to jail. I didn’t want to go to jail.

Just hoping if something was to happen, we would be able to help each other out. I’m not going to go into the exact story, but it was about me being there for him. Him being there for me. Honestly, that’s everybody’s low key fear – going to jail. It was an interesting time to put that record out because everybody seemed to be getting harassed more by the police. It’s an emotional record that can touch a lot of different people.

“My Apology” is an extremely sensitive record for me because I was apologizing for being myself. That’s something you shouldn’t do (apologize for being yourself). But I figured making a record about it would help me get through it. Creating that record helped me to accept myself a lot more. The line that really speaks to me from the whole song is “Sorry baby for being so uncool/I’m too wild and know I ain’t no good for you/That’s my style/It’s just my kind of blues”. But “My Apology” means a lot to me.  I was apologizing for how that individual saw me. I was dating a guy who used to say, “You’re just too wild”. A lot of people say that to me, but when they’re being wild, it’s not wild to them.

I think a lot of times too, people will get you to think that if you act a certain way, that’s the right thing to do. Basically, it just makes them feel more secure if they can dictate how you act.

Yeah, one thing I told one of my best friends today was I understand that you can doubt yourself, because other people doubt you. I can understand other people doubting me, because I’ve doubted myself. If you don’t believe in yourself and feel comfortable with what you’re doing, then other people will find room to doubt you as well. I care about people’s feelings. I am unapologetic too though. When you’re on an airplane and the airplane is going down, before your children, your husband, anybody else you have in your life, you have to put your mask on first. You matter the most. You have to save yourself first. If you’re not comfortable with yourself, then nobody will f#&k with you period.

You remade Sade’s “Smooth Operator”. I do think there are some songs that are classic and don’t need to be touched. But, when I heard your version, I thought, “Damn, this is right there with Sade or maybe even a little better”. Who are your musical influences who made you want to get out there and sing?

Well, I feel that way about that record too. I’m just going to keep it 100 percent with you. I remember my publisher saying they owned the rights to a few of Sade’s records. “Smooth Operator” was in there. I never dreamed of doing that song over. Sade is perfect. I really enjoy that record though because I relate to every word. Me, Quinton and Ryan produced the record.

They have a group called New Hampshire and we were all sitting together. The group started playing the record and they were beach players. They were found on the beach. Their style is their style but it’s inspired by the water. When I heard the song, I just wanted to hone in on that. How would I sing this record if it were my actual story? Everybody was acting like it was so dope. At first, I was so scared. That record is a piece of me being on European tours and being able to be on Grammy nominated albums.

Pappadeaux Gets A Cat 30 Hurricane

A birthday celebration would not be complete without visiting my favorite restaurant, Pappadeaux. They also just celebrated their 30th birthday in October of 2016. In honor of this grand occasion, they added a new drink called Cat 30. The Cat 30 was right on time for my birthday on February 4th. Pappadeaux has slowly added new cocktails to their menu over the last few months. All of the drinks I have tasted have been worth it. So, the Cat 30 was no different.

This drink is made with Flor de Cana 7 year aged rum, house made Fassionola syrup, fresh lime juice, soda and Hennessy V.S. Yep, it’s pretty freaking awesome. This drink has a very smooth flavor that’s not too sweet but dodges being too strong as well. I wouldn’t suggest getting more than two of these in one sitting because it will sneak up on you. However, I have definitely added this one to the list as one of my new favorites from Pappadeaux.

I have tasted several different hurricanes before and this concoction is one of the most inventive I have tried. The drink doesn’t have the traditional red color that many hurricanes do. Instead, Cat 30 is a golden yellow. Trust me, this is a drink you’ll want to try for your next happy hour, birthday celebration or just because you want something great to sip on.

Bottoms up….it’s Thirsty Thursday!

Feel free to share some of your favorite cocktails from Pappadeaux as well.

5 Memorable 2017 Grammy Moments

This year’s Grammy Awards were the first ones I was actually anxious to see. There was so much that happened on the show (good and bad). However, I’ll get straight to it and recap 5 of the most memorable moments of the 59th Annual Grammy Awards.

Chance Takes Us To Church

2016 was a huge year for Chance the Rapper. He closed it with 7 Grammy nominations for his critically acclaimed album, Coloring Book. He won several awards, but the biggest victory was his win for Best New Artist. Let’s not forget he made history as the first and only artist to win a Grammy for a streaming only album. Oh and how could we forget the way he took everyone to the spiritual mountain top with a medley of hits from Coloring Book, featuring Kirk Franklin and Tamela Mann?

Beyonce: The New Age Virgin Mary

Although Beyonce’s performance seemed like a bit of blasphemy, there is no doubt that she captured everyone’s attention. She won several awards, including Best Urban Contemporary Album. Everyone was thinking, “How is Beyonce going to slay us all with this pregnant belly in tow”? Well, she did just that as she leaned back in that chair, making us all nervous for her safety. Eeesh. Plus, she performed “Love Drought” which in my opinion, is the best song from Lemonade. Plus, her sister, Solange, won the well deserved Best R&B Performance Award for “Cranes In The Sky”.

Adele’s Fastlane Flake Up

Adele opened the Grammys with her monstrous hit “Hello”. However, that wasn’t the performance that really made people talk. She performed a new arrangement of George Michael’s “Fastlane”. Things seemed to be going well until she stopped the song, coupled with some explicit language. She apologized profusely, pulled it together and contnued the song (which she nailed by the way). She even tried to offer up her Album of the Year Grammy Award to Beyonce, stating that she was the one who really deserved it. Adele had a strange night in many aspects, but she took home the most hardware for the evening.

A Tribe Called Quest Gets Political

Busta Rhymes and Anderson Paak  joined the legendary A Tribe Called Quest on stage for their high energy performance. They blazed through their hit “Award Tour” and then went into songs from their latest album, We Got It From Here…Thank You For Your Service, including the poignant “We the People”. Their performance was Hip Hop nostalgia at its best and simultaneously the creme of the crop for the new age movement. RIP Phife Dawg.

That’s How We Like It

Bruno Mars didn’t disappoint in either of his two performances tonight. First up, he performed “That’s What I Like”, which is in my opinion the best track from 24K Magic. The performance was filled with pyrotechnics, bright lights and a risen stage. I think everyone was ready for his upcoming tour after that performance. Then he performed again with The Time, as they took us back to the late 80s. The Time was actually good enough by themselves, but Bruno Mars really took it home, complete with a Prince outfit that made him look eerily familiar to the purple one.

What were your favorite moments from this year’s Grammy Awards?

20 Years Of Erykah’s Brilliant Baduizm

February 11, 2017 marks 20 years since the release of Erykah Badu’s groundbreaking debut album, Baduizm. I still remember the first time I saw the music video for “On & On”. The concept was bare bones, comical, witty, quirky and yes, a bit strange. But that’s Erykah Badu at her finest. We may have initially missed why her cypher kept moving like a rolling stone. The groove was so intoxicating though, we really didn’t care. “Rim Shot” was one of the most clever and cool ways to kick off an album. She showcased her edgier, more Hip Hop influenced side there.

Let’s not forget about the fan favorite, “Appletree”. Erykah Badu dismissively harmonizes, “If you don’t wanna be down with me/You don’t wanna pick from my apple tree”. Part of Erykah Badu’s appeal is she has no problem marching to the beat of her own drum. She’s fearless, sexy, brutally honest, cool and sweet all in one breath. She’s so freaking irresistible that it’s easy to see how she got herself in a sticky love triangle on the classic “Next Lifetime”. Although she ultimately decided to stay faithful to her mate, she dangles us by a syrupy, seductive string the whole way through. In case you were wondering, “She’s a lot of woman, but not enough to divide the pie”.

She wasn’t afraid to voice her concerns for a lover caught up in the street life on “The Other Side Of The Game”, the dreary pre cursor to the tweeter bumping, “Danger” (from the Worldwide Underground album). Someone pass me a glass of whiskey. Erykah Badu is an artist of versatility, as evident on songs like the jazzy, blues tale “Afro”. It’s still a shame she spent all that time getting ready and didn’t get to go see Wu-Tang. She is the queen of being unbothered, as exhibited smoothly on songs like the addictive, mellow “Certainly” and the hopeful, yet cautionary “4 Leaf Clover”.

Beneath her tough exterior, Erykah Badu does get vulnerable at times. “No Love” calls out a no good man who has taken her for granted. Don’t mistake it though. She’s not down and out. She’s just simply stating the facts here. Ms. Badu begs for us to lift our hearts up to God on the frustrated “Drama”. This song is just as relevant today (if not more) as it was 20 years ago. She reserves the right to change her mind from one minute to the next, on songs like The Roots produced “Sometimes”.

There are few artists who can look back at the last 20 years of their career with a smile. Erykah Badu was one of the front runners for the new movement of neo soul at the time Baduizm was released. Since then, she has crossed boundaries, color lines and even generations with her music. Cheers to what’s in store for her in the future. Something tells me her staying power and innovative musical creativity will continue to go on and on….and on and on.

So, let’s take a look back at some of the most memorable moments from Baduizm

Ida Claire Gives The Taste Of Pearfection

On February 4th, I celebrated my 32nd birthday. I will share the new drinks I tried for my birthday. Basically, my birthday is taking over the month of February for Thirsty Thursdays. Pearfect 75 is the first drink I tried for my birthday weekend. This one was from Ida Claire. If you love pears, this is the drink for you! The drink includes gin, spiced pear juice, honey, lime juice and sparkling rose. Despite the sweet tasting flavors included, this drink does not have an overpowering sugary taste.

Pearfect 75 will cost you about $10, unless you come to Ida Claire during happy hour. However, this drink is worth the full price. There’s a little bit of spice here, some sweetness and just enough liquor to give this drink the perfect kick. If there is a sexy drink that strong enough for a man, but smooth enough for a woman, this is it. I honestly am not a huge fan of gin, but it’s an excellent mix with all of the other ingredients here. There is no losing with this drink. Definitely try it for your next happy hour!

Although Thursdays are reserved for drinks, there is an appetizers that I must mention. The Crawfish Corn Beignets. These look like hush puppies, but they taste way better than that. These beignets are fried to perfection with bits of crawfish meat and corn inside. Plus, they come with a delicious smoked mustard remoulade. I get these every time I go to Ida Claire.

Want to strive for pearfection at your next happy hour gathering? Try the Pearfect 75 and the Crawfish Corn Beignets at Ida Claire. Trust me. You will thank yourself for it later.

Mariah Carey Snaps Back At Ex Fiance

How do you turn around quite arguably the most disturbing televised New Year’s Eve performance in recent years? You release a brand new single, airing out your own dirty laundry. Mariah Carey knows how to hit high notes, write hit songs and make headlines. Her and ex fiance, James Packer, were engaged last year. However, that lasted about as long as a #1 chart run for one of her singles. Supposedly, he broke off the engagement in the press, before telling her. I’m not sure of the whole story. Furthermore, it’s not much of my concern for this post.

“I Don’t” is the new single from Mariah Carey, featuring YG. The song samples the Donnell Jones classic, “Where I Wanna Be”. The track and the melody find her getting back to her R&B roots. She sounds great on the song and is doing much less of those whisper tones she has made her recent trademark (thank goodness). The music video, which has already garnered over 6,000,000 views, finds her scantily clad in a drop top. Oh and let’s not forget that she burns her $250,000 wedding dress in the video.

She’s obviously trying hard to prove her last sex appeal in the video. Although she doesn’t have a need to do that, I can understand her wanting to stand out against the competition today. Despite the single release, she says she has no plans for a new album right now. The success of “I Don’t” may be the deciding factor of whether or not we will get a new Mariah Carey album. This might just be the perfect time to channel her frustrations into some new chart toppers.

So, what are your thoughts on “I Don’t”? Has Mariah Carey burned out her superstar flame? Check out the song and video for yourself below. I wonder what her ex fiance has to say about it.

The Unlikely Cool, Tropical Nekter

Let’s just get this part out of the way. I’m not really a fan of bananas. The only time I will eat them is if they are blended in a smoothie. However, I decided to try something new at Nekter Juice Bar last week. Please don’t sleep on this place. If you have been sleeping on it by chance, then it’s time to wake up! Nonetheless, I wanted to taste their Tropical Cooler smoothie drink. The ingredients are bananas (yuck), kale, pineapples, spinach, coconut butter and coconut water.

I do like kale, but it can definitely have a bitter taste. The contents of this smoothie still made me uncertain. I decided to try it anyway though. I was definitely glad I did. The kale cuts most of the banana taste, but the pineapples cut the bitterness of the kale. Surprisingly, none of the flavors in this smoothie are over powering. Everything coexists together nicely here. Plus, you can’t deny the great health benefits of all of these ingredients. I was actually feeling a little under the weather the day I tried the smoothie. I felt better quickly after drinking it.

The 16 oz smoothie has only 210 calories, while the 24 oz has 315 calories. I used the smoothie as a meal replacement, but it’s great in between meals as well. For those protein loaders, you can even chose from their selection of several different kinds to include in the drink. This is not their sweetest drink on the menu. However, if you are looking for something that is packed full of nutrients with good taste, this is it! Make sure you go try out Nekter Juice Bar, even if you don’t get this particular drink. Their ingredients are consistently fresh and always give you an extra boost of energy.

Bell Biv Devoe Returns With Three Stripes

Never trust a big butt and a smile. Ronnie, Ricky and Mike (a.k.a. Bell Biv Devoe) took the world by storm in the early 90s with hits like their smash single “Poison”. However, the group was birthed from New Edition’s massive success. Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill, Ralph Tresvant, Ronnie DeVoe, Ricky Bell and Michael Bivins made groundbreaking history together. The group recently received their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. New Edition has its own mini series biopic which recently aired aired on BET. While stars like TLC and SWV missed their opportunity to capitalize on new music during their own biopics/reality shows, Bell Biv Devoe chose to strike while the iron was hot.

There is no word yet on whether or not New Edition will be releasing new music. However, the biopic mini series has already received rave reviews and record breaking ratings. Bell Biv Devoe just dropped their new album, Three Stripes, last week. You have to have respect for a group that is still relevant nearly 30 years after their hey day. There are plenty of nostalgic moments sprinkled throughout the album, including an intro from the legendary Dough E. Fresh. The group chose to play it safe for the most part. Nonetheless, this album is pure Hip Hop infused R&B. The group played it smart by sticking to their original sound. After all, they were part of the originators of Hip Hop artists collaborating with R&B artists that we hear so much of today.

The first half of the album has more of the uptempo party cuts. Bell Biv Devoe’s first single, “Run” is reminiscent of Biggie’s “Hypnotize”. The song details their frustrations of giving their all to an ungrateful woman. Eric Sermon wrote and produced the song as well. “Hot Damn” is one of the standout tracks though. The production will surely get you moving and this is one of the catchiest songs on Three Stripes. The group also doesn’t mind bucking up against any male competitors on the memorable “I’m Betta” (written and produced by KayGee  of Naughty by Nature).

“All Dat There” dances a fine line between being an R&B slow jam and mid-tempo cut. Nonetheless, the group tows that line well. This one has single release potential written all over it. Some of the other slow jams are a bit underwhelming like the vocally crisp, yet lyrically lackluster “Finally” (featuring SWV). “Don’t Go” helps balance it out though as the second best slow song on the album. Boyz II Men (who Mike Bivins founded) stop by on the pleasant throwback, yet forced sounding  “One More Try”.

Overall, BBD shines brightest when they are playing the bad boys of R&B. Three Stripes is a very solid effort though from three men who have nothing to prove at this stage in their career. They even slide in a reference to the hit single “Too Close”, from R&B group Next. Don’t call it a comeback. Ronnie, Ricky and Mike have been here for years.

The ‘Sting’ Is Coming In 7 Days

I have always loved poetry for as long as I can remember. The emotion, the voice inflections through spoken word, the word play. All of it is so intriguing to me, especially when you hear or see different poets in action. However, people have to live poetry in order to write about it. My new book, Stingrays, has been nearly 2 years in the making. Within that time frame, I either dealt with and/or experienced those around going through racism, sexism, injustice, self esteem issues, depression and the loss of a loved one.

For these reasons and many more, several poems started flowing freely from my mind. The next thing I knew, I had over a hundred. Now, the official release of Stingrays is only 7 days away! I wanted everything about this book to be different from my previous works. The major element is releasing it as an ebook. Although I did offer print copies through a successful Kickstarter at the end of last year, Stingrays will primarily be available in the digital space. There is definitely something for everyone in this book. There is at least one situation (if not many) that we all have experienced in some way.

People always ask me if I ever wanted to release an ebook of poetry. I did with Honesty Box a couple of years ago, but that was more of a compilation between my first 3 books, plus some new poems.  This time,  I decided to make an ebook with all of the original poems for Stingrays! Make sure you get your copy on iBook, Kindle, Amazon or any digital retailer of your choice on February 4th (my birthday)! If for nothing else, it will make a great birthday present for the author : ) Here is one of the poems that will be featured in the book. This one is called “Permission”.

Bomp bomp bomp bomp

It can’t be morning already

Look at my phone to find

I’m late already

Ease out of the bed slow and steady

For a brief moment of meditation

Without hesitation I scroll through

Notifications, posts and emails

That immediately remind me

I just may not be tall enough

My shoulders might be a couple inches shy

of being broad enough

My pockets aren’t deep enough and

Dare I say it, my popularity index indicates

I may not be worth enough

That’s tough

This trough of wading

For the approval of society

Is getting sloshy

Subservient to live beneath

My unalienable rights

This is my land, but I have to ask

For refuge to get rest at night

Hoping I won’t be refused this time

Please, may I and thank you

Might just be polite

The water has risen to my chest

Now it salutes me at my eyes

I don’t advise I still need your permission

to stay afloat

Do I?

Keyshia Cole Preps Epic Comeback

My feelings towards Keyshia Cole have been quite indifferent lately. I thought she struck gold with her first two or three albums. Everything after that has been hit or miss for me, with the exception of a few singles. Her last album, Point of No Return, has gotten two full spins to date on my CD player since I purchased it. Keyshia Cole falls over the line of just being too real. Some things just don’t need to be shared. Her predecessor Mary J. Blige has learned to tow that line better than Barnum and Bailey.

Nonetheless, Ms. Cole has some new music for us. She recently signed to Epic records. I felt like that was a big power move for her career. She joined forces with a major label that could promote her properly. Plus, most records that LA Reid has touched have turned gold (or platinum). So, imagine my optimism when I heard her new single, “You” featuring Remy Ma and French Montana.  Honestly, the song isn’t that bad. Sadly, it’s not that great either. Keyshia Cole is still performing the same song and dance. The song speaks about a man that has treated her badly. She lets him know that he picked the wrong one to play with.

Although I’m not a huge fan of Remy Ma or French Montana, their verses actually help the song. I’m still curious to see what tricks Keyshia Cole has up her sleeve for this album. “You” is decent, but it doesn’t sound strong enough for a lead single. The full version of the song has disappeared online. However, the full single is available for purchase on Itunes. What are your thoughts on “You”? Will you be purchasing Keyshia Cole’s upcoming album?

Let’s hope this new music will be worth the three year wait. Here is a look back at some of Keyshia Cole’s brighter moments. These songs are still on point.
