3 Things You Should Continue After Your Daniel Fast

I did the Daniel Fast about 4 years ago. The 21 day plan basically excludes all meat, dairy/eggs, sugar (even honey and agave) and caffeine. Eeesh!! I know. Vegetables, fruit, legumes, beans and potatoes are all fair game though. As I enter the last week of the fast, I thought I’d share a few helpful tips. Although I will return to a more normal diet, I plan on keeping several of the elements in the Daniel Fast in my everyday meal plan. Here are a few things I’ll be continuing. Feel free to share your list as well.

Coconut Water

This is a tricky one. You may have to experiment to find a brand that tastes good to you. Vita Coco is one of my favorites. I usually drink it first thing in the morning, before my workout. Coconut water has natural electrolytes, so it gives you a boost of energy too. Part of the struggle for me with the Daniel Fast is not being able to have my pre-workout drinks. However, coconut water is a great substitute. Also, an apple with peanut butter (organic if you’re on the fast) works wonders for energy too.

Sweet Potatoes

Ok, so you may be thinking you can eat sweet potatoes any time. Yes, that is correct. However, you have to find a way to make food taste good when you’re unable to use sugar and butter. I can’t take too much credit for this one. I found a simple recipe online that gives an extra kick to natural sweet potatoes. First, skin them and cover them with nutmeg and cinnamon. No guilty feelings here. You can use as much as you want. Then bake the sweet potatoes for about an hour and a half on 350 degrees. This is lower than the normal temperature for baked sweet potatoes. The longer you bake them though (on a lower temperature), the sweeter they taste. The nutmeg and cinnamon acts almost as a second skin on the potatoes when it’s done. Sprinkle some lime juice on it and eat! It’s amazing.

Vegetable Spirals

Alright, these can be a little pricey. For the convenience and health benefits, they are worth it though (or just buy your own veggetti). You can find zucchini and butternut squash spirals at any organic health food store. 1 box equals about 2 servings, but it’s a great way to feel like you’re eating noodles. You get none of the pasta carbs and all of the health benefits from the vegetables! I have already started thinking of how I can cook these with shrimp and chicken for a guilt free meal.

*Updated on 1/6/2020: Since the original date of this post, I purchased my own veggie spiralizer. Bed Bath & Beyond has one for just $10. I use it pretty often for making quick veggie noodles – at a fraction of the cost of the pre-made ones at the grocery store.

Ed Sheeran Gets Ready For The Great Divide

Ed Sheeran took Pop music by storm in 2015. His last album, x, was a huge crossover success. He obviously didn’t believe in taking much of a break. He released two new songs, “Castle on the Hill” and “Shape of You”, earlier this month. The singles are the predecessors to his upcoming third studio album, Divide. Although he has already proven himself to be a star, he has the pressure of topping his previous feats. Many fans are waiting to see if his new album will be comparable to his previous stellar works.

Let’s break down “Castle on the Hill” first. The song has a very folky pop sound, which pairs well with his gritty vocals here. He sings about drunken tales with friends and how he yearns to be home again. This song could pull nostalgia from practically anyone. Although I don’t think this would be the best choice for a first single (unless it’s strictly being served to the Pop market), it’s a solid song nonetheless. I see this song capturing his more mature audience. There’s no denying his clever songwriting ability and strong vocals.

Now, “Shape of You” waltzes into the room. Everyone brings their attention to the center of the floor. This song easily sounds like something Maroon 5 wish they had gotten their hands on first. However, Ed Sheeran doesn’t copying anyone’s style here. This vibe is all his own. The tropical sounding production, layered with his smooth vocals are a surefire formula for the dance floor. By the time the drums come in, you’re already hooked. This song will surely please his current fan base and gain him some new listeners as well. He croons, “I’m in love with the shape of you/We push and pull like a magnet too”. In addition, the song has already reached No. 1 on the UK charts.

Look out for the release of Divide on March 3rd. The album is available for pre-order on iTunes now. What are your thoughts on his new singles? Does he have what it takes to recapture his brightest musical moments again? Will you be getting his new album?

Opinions Change Like Underwear

Many of you have heard the old saying, “opinions are like ________ and everybody’s got one”. I’ll let you guess what the blank symbolizes if you don’t know. I talked with a friend recently about a new milestone she’s about to accomplish. Her excitement was obvious, but there was also an uneasiness in her tone. She told me that some of the people closest to her will try to criticize her. “Why didn’t you do it this way?” “Do you think this will really be successful?” “Oh, is this just for fun?” These are all questions we may hear that can put us in a negative mindset.

Have you ever noticed that people who can’t make moves of their own constantly critique the moves of others? Don’t get me wrong? Honest feedback and constructive criticism is needed for all of us to grow. However, there are some people who pick apart your dreams because they don’t have the courage to live out their own. I have found over the years that you can ask the same question to the same person and get a different answer. How can this be? We are all battling our own hangups, frustrations, demons and stress points. One day someone may tell you they love your new haircut. The next day they may hate it. People deflect their own selves on others when they make judgments. The response they give often depends on how they feel at the moment.

Remember that people’s opinions change like underwear. When it comes to your dreams, don’t let the opinions of others hold you back. Seek wise counsel, but don’t take all advice (usually unsolicited) for face value. Do you want it bad enough even if no one gives you a pat on the back? Are you willing to get past the grit to see your dreams to come to fruition? Hopefully, the answer to these questions is yes. Nonetheless, meeting your goals is going to take some hard work, determination and dismissing unwarranted and toxic opinions. Are you up for the challenge? I sure hope so.

LeToya Luckett Snaps Back 2 Reality

2017 marks the 20 year anniversary of the start of Destiny’s Child. They are one of the biggest girl groups in history, selling millions of records worldwide. Although Michelle Williams made more of the chart topping hits with the group, I still liked the idea of the original lineup more. LeToya Luckett has been the more active of the 2 former original members. She is preparing for the release of her third studio album, Until Then. Her new album will mark the end of a 7 year gap since her sophomore release, Lady Love.

LeToya knows a thing or two about heartbreak. In fact, her biggest singles (“Torn”, “She Don’t” and “Regret”) all have some elements of love gone sour. Last week, LeToya released “Back 2 Life”, the premier single from her new album. The song finds her disappointed, yet composed over a breakup. Basically, the guy wasn’t who she thought he was and now she is faced with moving forward….without him. The song alone has a fresh sound that should assist in helping her permeate the current musical landscape.

However, the song’s movie style music video is what really sets it off. The slick visual finds LeToya recounting a perfect love story and the point where it goes wrong. I won’t spoil it for you, but it’s a story many of us have seen or been a part of. She states that her album will still be mostly R&B music. There will also be a bit of an alternative flare this go round though. Hopefully this project gives her the recognition she deserves. Check out the video for “Back 2 Life” below.

What are your thoughts on the song and video? Would you Bump It or Dump It?

Also, look for LeToya Luckett to play Dionne Warwick in an upcoming biopic about the singer’s rise to fame.

It Takes 21 Days To….

We have all heard the saying, “It takes 21 days to break a bad habit”. I am actually doing a 21 day fast right now. So, believe that there are some bad habits being broken. However, 21 days means something different today. The official release date is February 4th (my birthday). I am extremely excited about the release of this book. There is something here for everyone. The poetry featured in Stingrays details situations in life that can “sting” us.

Authentic poetry doesn’t just happen overnight. Stingrays took a year and a half to write. All the while, life happened as I wrote. Life stung at times, while I wrote more. Some of the topics covered are love, forgiveness, injustice and loss. Although I believe poetry is best read in the physical form, I decided to release this book digitally. The Kickstarter I recently wrapped up was a means to get the best of both worlds. Stay tuned, because Stingrays is not the only book I have coming this year.

No Cream In The Middle is coming this July. This is the second installment of my three part novel series. If you thought Fortune Cookie was steamy, it’s about to get even hotter. Cookie believes her life has finally made a positive turn. However, her greatest drama is looming just around the corner. Stingrays features a teaser of No Cream In The Middle as well. Make sure to get your copy of Stingrays on February 4th! This book is my most personal work to date, which is why I decided to release it on my birthday.

Plus, here’s an excerpt from Stingrays. This poem is called “Mr. Justify”. The ebook will be available on iBook, Kindle, Amazon, Barnes and Noble Online and all online retailers in just 21 days. Also, there just may be a special surprise coming this summer too.

Hello, it’s me again

I don’t mean to bother you

Or take up too much of your time

But I’ve gotten myself tangled up

Caught up in a mess I can’t undo again

In a bind, slave to my mind

And need your help because

I’ve abused the truth

Maybe told more than my share

Of a few white lies

Broken a few hearts

And caused several sets of eyes to cry

I don’t know why I keep

Leaving these loose ends untied

But Mr. Justify

I always heard you could restore

Sight to the blind

Even if it’s nothing more than

False hope you supply

Oh please, Mr. Justify

I need your advice

It cuts too deeply to face

The truth of these vices

So help me live another lie

Thanks in advance

I’ll be here awaiting your reply on stand by

Kelly Price: Say It Ain’t So

I’m going to make this as quick and painless as possible. Let’s start with Chris Brown and Soulja Boy. You have likely heard murmurings of the two artists’ social media feud. How did it start? The drama began when Soulja Boy liked a picture of Chris Brown’s ex, Karrueche Tran. Chris Brown got upset, words (or rather posts) were exchanged and an all on virtual fight ensued. As if all that wasn’t ridiculous enough, they are reportedly prepping for a boxing match in Dubai to air out their frustrations. Yep, you read that right. That’s not all. Floyd Mayweather and 50 Cent have jumped on board as “promoters”.

Plus, Mike Tyson is offering his services as Chris Brown’s trainer. This can’t be real. Why don’t they just have a sing/dance off? Oh wait, Chris Brown would win that. Heck, Chris Brown will probably win the boxing match too. However, that is not why you’re reading this post today. The sour and senseless cherry on top of all of this madness is Kelly Price. Yesterday afternoon, she posted a beautifully made up selfie of herself on Instagram. Harmless, right? Well, it’s harmless until you read the caption. She’s giving her thanks to 50 Cent for “trusting her” to sing the national anthem at the Chris Brown vs. Soulja Boy brawl. Huh? I just threw up a little bit too.

In some regards, I expect this behavior from Soulja Boy. Let’s be honest. When was the last time he had a hit song? Considering all of the headlines he has made, it’s not too far fetched for Chris Brown either. However, Kelly Price is still a head scratcher in all this. I don’t get it. Honestly, I lost respect for her after her catty stint on R&B Divas. Nonetheless, her talent reigns supreme. She is one of the best singers of this generation. I don’t understand how she supports this. Are times that hard that these are the kinds of gigs she’s booking? I can’t take it. I’m done. Let’s just reflect on some of the better periods of Kelly Price’s career. Here are a few of her best songs to get you through this hump day.

Who are your bets on? Chris Brown or Soulja Boy?  Will Kelly Price’s performance go down as one of the greatest renditions of the national anthem? Whatever the case, this is the biggest Crockpot of foolery I’ve seen in a while.

Elle Varner: A Long Overdue 4 Letter Word

Elle Varner has left fans pining for a refill since her solid Perfectly Imperfect debut album dropped in 2012. That was four years ago. She has released some hot like fire singles in the interim. However, the absence of a new Elle Varner album has left some supporters with some four letter words. Oh, yes that album. A couple of years ago, Elle Varner quietly teased tracks from her upcoming sophomore album, 4 Letter Word. The intrigue of her appeal lies in her model looks and around the way girl attitude. Songs like “Cold Case”, “F$%k It All” and “Where Your Man Is” are all clever, witty masterpieces. Nonetheless, the album has still not been released.

I’m not sure who should be held accountable here. Perhaps it’s Elle herself trying to perfect her sound and concept. Maybe the record label is dragging its feet. The recent songs Elle Varner showcased found her more aware of her gift. She was deliberately sexier this time and so….well, angry. She gave a glimpse of some Left Eye burning down the house tendencies this time around. I was here for every blazing minute of it. She clearly had some pent up aggression to let loose. Still, with all of this fury, there was no new album.

Just when the sting had subsided, she resurfaced a couple of weeks ago for a special “One Night Only” performance. The show featured surprise guests Maxwell and Ro James. However, no one was able to steal Elle Varner’s well deserved shine. Now we just need a surprise release of 4 Letter Word. Love. Lies. Loss. Hate. Lust. #@%^. You name it, Elle Varner needs to hurry up and deliver this CD quickly. I have full confidence it will dodge anyone’s skepticism (unlike Frank Ocean’s disappointing Blonde let down).

Check out part of Elle Varner’s December performance below. Also, here are some of the stellar singles she has dropped over the last couple of years. Surely, she won’t leave us hanging and unleash another album (preferably 4 Letter Word) soon.

MangoSix Kiwi Mint Delight

I decided to lay low with the Thirsty Thursday posts until I found a drink that was really worth talking about. However, I went to a new place called MangoSix Cafe last week with my wife. MangoSix has a pretty interesting concept. They serve desserts, coffee, smoothies made with fresh fruit, cold pressed juices and specialty drinks. I was honestly overwhelmed by the wide array of menu choices. The ambiance of MangoSix has a warm, modern feel that is reminiscent of Starbucks. Their approach has a slightly younger feel though.

After heavy debating, I decided to try the Kiwi Mojito. Everyone who has followed my Thirsty Thursday posts knows I love a good mojito. These are non alcoholic versions, of course. Ironically, this mojito is one of the best ones I have ever had. I will warn you though, the mint taste is pretty strong. This drink would taste great anytime, but I imagine it being particularly refreshing in the summer months. There’s a hint of sparkling water to give the drink a bit of a fizz. Plus, there are chunks of fresh kiwi throughout the drink. The kiwi adds a naturally spicy flavor which pairs surprisingly well with the mojito taste.

I will definitely be back to MangoSix. Their service, along with their kiwi mojito, is superb. Sadly, mainly establishments tend to forget that bad service can ruin a dining experience. This is definitely not an issue at MangoSix. Their new location is in Carrollton, TX. However, they have locations worldwide. Their business originated in Japan and recently pegged Los Angeles, CA as their break into the US market. Now the greater Dallas area is getting a taste of this unique restaurant. If you’re looking for a hot, premium cup of coffee or healthy alternative to satisfy your sweet tooth, MangoSix is the place to be.

Bottoms up….it’s Thirsty Thursday!

Run The Jewels Three Times Over

Rapper Killer Mike and Rapper/Producer El-P may seem like an unlikely duo at first glance. However, the pair has been making music for nearly 6 years now. Their collaboration first started when El-P served as one of the producers on Killer Mike’s underrated R.A.P. Music album. The self proclaimed “murderous pair” released their latest Run The Jewels installment, Run The Jewels 3, on Christmas Eve. The release date seems odd for such a militant and aggressive album. Then again, their unorthodox approach to the music is part of what makes this album so great.

RTJ3 starts off with a bass heavy, molasses tale of survival “Down”, featuring Joi. The duo isn’t afraid to tackle politics either. They openly endorsed Bernie Sanders for the 2016 Presidential Election. On the powerful “Talk To Me”, Killer Mike compares the man with the toupee and the spray tan to Satan himself. Borrowed voice clips remind us that our battles are fought against spiritual principalities, not flesh and blood. The duo has a knack for stripping down the gimmicks to deliver true Hip Hop. RTJ3 maintains a cohesive sound throughout. The energy never lets up as proven by the supersonic bass of “Call Ticketron”. The song samples the DJ Rob Base classic “It Takes Two” in a clever way that still makes the song a worthy Run The Jewels original.

El-P and Killer Mike are well aware of their abilities. However, instead of boasting about women, cars and money, their rhyming skills take center stage.  “Hey Kids (Bumaye)” finds the duo trading of playful, yet skilled rapid fire verses. The socially poignant “Thieves! (Screamed The Ghost)” tackles ideals of riots, while addressing why some victims of injustice have resorted to them. “2100” featuring Boots was strategically released the day after the Presidential Election, giving just a glimpse of the lyrical content fans could expect on the new album.

Trina stops by the party to lend her signature Miami drawl on “Panther Like A Panther”. However, none of the stars on the album outshine its main stars. Killer Mike’s flows seem to feed off the intensity of El-P’s production. El-P’s flows compliment Killer Mike’s well with a slightly more approachable undertone. Don’t get it twisted though. El-P did not come to play games. His flow sits well lyrically next to Killer Mike.

The funkadelic groove of “Oh Mama” serves as one of the album’s most memorable tracks. The song details their mothers’ concerns for sons living the street life. Nonetheless, Run The Jewels don’t seem to be changing up their ways any time soon. “Thursday in the Danger Room” allows both rappers to recount personal stories of loved ones they lost to the streets and illness. The song also features jazz saxophonist Kamasi Washington. Overall, Run The Jewels is here for what matters most in Hip Hop. They stand for equality, an end to injustice and of course their gritty real life street situations. Hopefully, they’ll keep running the jewels of great music for several years to come.

The New Fiction Act Is ‘Everywhere’

“Good girls go to heaven, bad girls go everywhere”. This is a famous quote from former Cosmopolitan editor Helen Gurley Brown. Ironically, this is also how the UK alternative Rock group, Everywhere, got their name. The band was formed in 2012, spearheaded by lead singer Max Berga. Now, the group has returned with their sophomore EP, Fiction Act. At first listen, Everywhere may remind you of groups like One Republic or U2. However, they definitely prove they have their own flare and style.

“Shades At Night” kicks off the EP on a high note. The song details a woman who hides her true feelings behind shades. The song has clever lyrical content that depicts heartbreak nearing its trenches (“You wear your shades at night. You cannot see how hard I fall. I clench my fist so tight. Try to burst through your brick wall”). Please remove this woman’s shades immediately. “Heroine” follows in a similar vein where the group describes being intoxicated by love. The production is slick, delectable pop at its best without coming across too sugary. There are just enough elements of rock here to roughen up the smooth edges and pristine vocals.

“Some Other Dude” is a comical showstopper that instantly sounds like a surefire hit. The song is also Fiction Act‘s first single. This track serves as a rhythmic pep talk for the guy who waits too long to dance with the hot chick on the dance floor. Well, she eventually moves on and dances with “some other dude”. “Let It Go” is the hypnotic ballad that closes out the EP. Everywhere is a group that has mass appeal, witty lyrics and smooth production. Isn’t that all we ever ask for in good music anyway?
