Remembering Pop Star George Michael

George Michael first gained critical acclaim and worldwide stardom as one half of the duo Wham! He quickly gained mass popularity with songs like “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go”, “Father Figure” and “Faith”. The pinnacle of his career spanned from the late 80s to early 90s. His image evolved over the years. George Michael started out as a starry eyed teeny bop crooner, then transitioned into more of a sensual artist. However, he had his share of socially conscious songs and even got in a trouble a few times for speaking his mind too much. Nonetheless, his imprint on the music industry will forever be remembered. George Michael was found dead at his home in Oxfordshire, England on Christmas day. He was only 53 years old. Here’s a look back at some of the most memorable music of George Michael’s career.

“I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)”

George Michael won a Grammy for this song in 1988. The soul stirring track was a rousing duet with the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. The song remains one of his biggest hits.

“Faith”

When you say George Michael, this is one of the songs people immediately associate with him. This bluesy guitar song was the title track of the album by the same name. Oh yeah, that same album just happened to take home the honor of Album of the Year at the 1989 Grammy Awards.

“Father Figure”

This is one of the more sexually driven songs from George Michael. Or was it just about love? I think most people made it more about sex. But then there’s that awkward moment where he refers to himself as his lover’s father. Seemed weird, but fans still listened….and liked it anyway. The music video won Best Direction of a Video (George Michael and Andy Morahan) at the 1988 MTV Video Music Awards.

“I Want Your Sex”

Welp, it’s pretty self explanatory what George Michael wanted here. Ironically, this video was ridiculed for being too racy in its heyday. This is child’s play compared to today’s sexual innuendo (or lack thereof). This was yet another big hit featured on George Michael’s most successful album, Faith.

“If I Told You That”

This song wasn’t a huge single from Whitney Houston’s My Love Is Your Love album. However, the original version was one of the best tracks on that album. The music video version with George gave it an extra zing. Sadly, this was truly a missed opportunity for another surefire hit from that album.

Just Blame It On The Residue

Wouldn’t it be cool if we could see people’s residue before they get too close to us? You know, all of the grimy, filthy, smelly dirt caked on their skin? Sure, we can easily take a hot shower to remove sweat and dirt from our physical beings. However, there are traces of invisible traits the eyes can never see. Some of us are looking good, smelling good and portraying the image of everything….good. Deep down this is often not the case. We all have residue resting on our skin from our environment and upbringing.

No one is exempt from the residue. Some of us have green smudges (envy) smeared all over our bodies. Then there are others who blend in with the masses, despite blue hues (sadness) of confusion. Let’s not forget those who have red scars and bruises (love). We all have enough demons to battle without carrying the weight of anyone else’s. However, we make the mistake of thinking we can heal our wounds by piling on more residue. We surround ourselves with other broken people (with edges even more jagged than our own), expected to be made whole.

Dirt plus dirt will never equal cleanliness. The sooner we realize that, the better off we will all be. Nonetheless, one person should not carry the heavy load of being responsible for our happiness or misfortune. We are products of what we experience and who we allow to get close to us. Sometimes it’s not even worth wracking our brains trying to figure out why people do the crazy things they do. Just blame it on the residue. People react to certain situations based on the own dirt they are carrying and the dirt they’ve accumulated from other people. Isn’t that just a gritty, slimy mess? In the meantime, let’s all worry about keeping ourselves clean, while remaining cautious of who rubs off on us.

Chris Brown Keeps The ‘Party’ Going

Chris Brown stays in the headlines. Either he’s making hits or involved in controversy. He’s also a master of being involved in both simultaneously. However, he seems poised and ready to focus on the music again. This weekend, he returned with his first official single since “Grass Ain’t Greener” (in May). His new single, “Party”, features Usher and Gucci Mane. The track has the trendy trap soul sound. The song’s lyrics are simple, elementary even. Chris Brown and his posse boast about how they keep the party going. Don’t get me wrong. The song will surely get bodies moving in the club. Chris Brown just doesn’t reach any new songwriting heights here. Ironically, “Party” grows on me each time I hear it.

A light hearted song was probably a good move for him though. Chris Brown has a clean slate (well, of sorts) to solely focus on his craft. He is finishing up his soon to be released new album, Heartbreak On A Full Moon. The new album’s title sounds promising. Let’s just hope it won’t be the major let down that was his last album, Royalty. Although I did thoroughly enjoy X, his album before Royalty. Nonetheless, Chris Brown has a pretty solid catalog.

Hopefully his new album will find him back on his A game again. His career started off with more of an innovative upswing. As of late, his style has drifted towards current sounds instead of breaking the mold. He still has managed to lead the pack of mainstream R&B/Pop male acts. Clearly, he must be doing something right. Time will tell if Heartbreak On A Full Moon will be the defining album of his career.

Check out “Party” for yourself below. What are your thoughts on the song? Would you Bump It or Dump It?

Pharrell: Hidden Figures & Hit Songs

What does Pharrell Williams have in common with Taraji P. Henson, Janelle Monae, Octavia Spencer, Kevin Costner and Kirsten Dunst? They all have something to do with the upcoming film, Hidden Figures. The movie is based on a true story about three African American women (Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson) who served as the master minds behind astronaut John Glenn’s launch into orbit. Pharrell served as one of the film’s producers. In addition, he wrote original music for the soundtrack. The stakes were definitely high this time, considering his monster smash “Happy” from the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack.

Pharrell proves he still has the Midas touch on the soundtrack’s breakout track, “Runnin”. This song (and most of the album) has a Ray Charles, James Brown inspired vintage sound. He expresses his angst against running here and hopes for better days. However, “Crave” is a party jumping, horn driven dance track. Lalah Hathaway lends her smoky, sultry vocals on the infectiously melodic “Surrender”. All of the contributing artists on the album are females. Then of course there’s the triumphant lead single “Able”. This song in particular serves as anthem for anyone who has ever been doubted.

Mary J. Blige offers one of the album’s best tracks on “Mirage”. Her confident alto pairs well with Pharrell’s playful production here. Alicia Keys and Pharrell trade verses on the spiritually inclined “Apple”. Janelle Monae appears on two of the soundtrack’s songs, including “Isn’t This The World” and “Jalapeno”. The former is a cautionary, gentle ballad. However, it’s the latter that dares you to sit still. “Jalapeno” has a spicy flare that lives up to its name and leaves you yearning for more collaborations between Janelle Monae and Pharrell. Pharrell lets the ladies shine, but hangs tough as the sole male voice on Hidden Figures. “Crystal Clear” finds him singing amidst a vibrant track reminiscent of Stevie Wonder.

Kim Burrell closes out the album on a high note of praise with the inspiring “I See A Victory”. Although the album clocks in at just over 33 minutes, it’s worth every second. The female artists were cleverly chosen and represent a wide range of styles. Sounds like Pharrell has another hit (or set of them) on his hands. Hidden Figures hits theaters on January 6, 2017.

The Tail End Of The Sting!

The power of a stingray lies in its tail. Ironically, Ancient Greek dentists used the venom contained inside of the tail of a stingray as anesthesia. There is always light after any storm. Maybe you have experienced the loss of a loved one recently. Maybe you’re feeling really unnoticed or unappreciated. Then, there may be some of you who are experiencing a tremendous heartbreak. Whatever the case, we all have one thing in common. We are still standing. This is the concept my latest poetry book, Stingrays, stems from.

Many of you may already know that I’m running a Kickstarter campaign for Stingrays. This campaign will give everyone a chance to get exclusive, signed and printed copies of the book. There are also t-shirts, signed replicas of the cover art and early bird copies of my upcoming novel, No Cream In The Middle, available. Although there are now 48 hours left to show your support, there is still time! Any contribution amount is greatly appreciated. I’m sure you will find the poetry included in Stingrays parallel to situations in your own life. In fact, here’s a poem called “Nothing Is Sacred” that I’m sure you can relate to. Read all 50+ plus poems from Stingrays for yourself HERE.

Whatever happened to the days

When pinky swears sealed the deal?

Or when you could sleep soundly

On the security of a scouts honor

What about when a round of thumb wars

Was all you needed to call a truce?

When the only complications we had

Were not letting the sherbet from push pops

Melt and drip through the tube

When commitment wasn’t measured by

Online impressions or being included on a guest list

But a simple yes or no was circled

And we dreaded being

Stuck in that maybe box, just like too many

Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches

Sticking firmly to the roof of our mouths

Don’t you remember when it was actually safe

To play outside after the street lights dimmed?

And drive bys and hate crimes

Were mostly what we saw on prime time films

When pushing the envelope was

Guys wearing backwards pants and

Girls with their hats to the back with their pants down low

And sexy could be found standing

Inside of a pair of overalls, fully clothed

Instead I am frozen solid

Tapping on the glass in this

Stuck in this horrific time capsule

Wishing for back to the future’s past

And we ask, how long will the dissention last?

If anyone finds a way to get back

To when something as simple as

Removing the plastic from a CD

And reading the liner notes was sacred

Beam me up and tell me how to get there fast

J. Cole: More Than The Eyez Can See

J. Cole fans have been impatiently awaiting his unexpected new album, 4 Your Eyez Only. Although he has garnered multi-platinum success, his level of artistry has quietly slipped under the radar. He’s not as conscious as Common. However, he’s not as pop as Drake either. His last album, 2014 Forest Hills Drive, went platinum with no guest features. 4 Your Eyez Only is also void of guest features. After just one listen, I’m sure his sales will even surpass its predecessor.

There’s a dark cloud over J. Cole for the majority of this album. He has always been reflective. This time his vibe exudes a sense of morbid reflection though. He released two stellar new songs, “Everybody Dies” and “False Prophets”. The production of these tracks fits right in with his new album; but neither made the final cut. Death is a looming concept throughout thee entire album. Ironically, the first two tracks touch on it heavier than expected. “For Whom The Bell Tolls” is a lyrical self fulfilling prophecy and declaration of his life. He questions whether he wants to live or die. Then on “Immortal”, he recounts his late teenage years of street life. The most disturbing line of the song is when he reveals his only wish in death: “Make it quick if the Lord takes me”.

As the album progress, the story seems to unravel as one that doesn’t necessary belong to J. Cole. Sure, there are obvious parallels. However, the narrative here seems to be J. Cole speaking from the perspective of his slain friend, James McMillan. His friend left behind a daughter (check out the retrospective title track, “4 Your Eyez Only”) at just 22 years old (checkout “Change” for the story of how he died). J. Cole’s haunting perspective here is one of someone who escaped the streets and had to witness his close friend get caught in its snares.

4 Your Eyez Only is arguably J. Cole’s most personal work to date. The beautiful two part “She’s Mine” speaks of his wife understanding thoroughly him. The second installment speaks of the love he has for his daughter. “Neighbors” exudes a throwback 90s style. Here, he is frustrated with those who undermine his success and believe he’s just a popular thug. He lightens up the mood on the radio friendly “Foldin’ Clothes”. The ladies will surely appreciate this song as he raps about the little things that matter in love.

J. Cole not only has a classic album on his hands, but a surefire major increase of respect in the rap game. 4 Your Eyez Only is music that should be seen, heard and felt by the masses. Check out and his documentary, Eyez, below.

Plus, here’s “Everybody Dies”, which didn’t make the album.

Also, don’t forget there are just 4 DAYS LEFT (ends on December 13th) to get your exclusive, signed copy of Stingrays, my latest poetry book.

The Coloring Book of Champions

I always enjoy the release of the Grammy nominees list each year. Of course, industry staples like Beyonce, Adele, Kirk Franklin and Rihanna made the cut. Those artists are expected to be on the list. However, one artist’s inclusion on the list pleasantly surprised me, Chance The Rapper. Don’t get me wrong. His CD, Coloring Book, gets heavy rotation on my Tidal playlist. I’m more surprised that the Grammys are giving him the credit he deserves. Chance The Rapper does not have a record deal. He’s also the first artist with an album solely available via streaming, to be nominated for a Grammy. That is some kind of chance at grabbing your dreams.

This post is not necessarily about music though. Today is about you. Imagine what would have happened if Chance The Rapper had given up on his music. Now, put yourself in that equation. What happens if you decide to give up on your art, music, culinary skills or leadership goals in corporate America? We all have something that someone told us is impossible. However, maybe it’s far past time we begin to shut out the negativity and put in the work to make our dreams reality.

Your passion will carry you through your pain. I always find it amazing how much more tolerance people can build up when their heart is in it. We are less tired and anxious when we operate in our gifts. We are more likely to succeed if for nothing else, for the sheer sweat we’re willing to give for what we love. Every champion has a back story and so do you. Step up to the plate and do what it takes to see the finish line. Speaking of finish lines, here’s a little motivation for your day. Chance The Rapper’s “Finish Line/Drown” is one of my favorite songs from his Coloring Book album. Hear it for yourself below. Oh and he’s not nominated for just 1 Grammy, but 7. Take a chance on yourself. You never know what you can achieve if you put your mind to it.

The Weeknd: A Complicated Starboy

weeknd

The Weeknd has always had an affinity for dark sounds and lyrics. However, in the last couple of years, his music has reflected a haunting of sorts. Beauty Behind The Madness was released less than 2 years ago. Now, he’ s already back with a collection of new tracks on the appropriately titled Starboy. Don’t let the upbeat sound of some of the album’s upbeat tracks fool you. The Weeknd is still battling his inner demons of fame. The title track, “Starboy”, featuring Daft Punk is accompanied by a video of him smashing expensive possessions in his home. The song’s lyrics speak of someone who has all the material things, but still feels empty. Let’s not forget the awkward glowing red cross he’s smashing everything with.

Don’t fret. He’s not alone in this drunken abyss of the after effects of fame. On “Party Monster”, he is woke by a girl with lips like Angelina Jolie and an ass like Selena. Oh, but he doesn’t know her name. “Reminder” finds him self aware of his success and unique sound. He even acknowledges the biters who have tried to copy his style. “Rockin'” is a surefire pop crossover hit. This song, like most of the album, has a heavy electronic pop sound. Lana Del Rey lends her hypnotic vocals on the “Stargirl” interlude. Kendrick Lamar also drops in to offer his a memorable verse on the bluesy, self aware “Sidewalks”. This is hands down one of the most autobiographical songs on the album. Here, The Weeknd sings he went from “homeless to Forbes list”.

“Six Feet Under” morbidly picks up where “Six Inch Heels”, his bass thumping Beyonce collaboration, left off. I’m no fan of Future by any stretch of the imagination. However, his feature on “All I Know” doesn’t manage to ruin the song. Overall, The Weeknd’s core audience will love this album. He has also sprinkled in just enough new elements to broaden his fan base as well. He closes out Starboy with another Daft Punk feature called “I Feel It Coming”. This song is one of the more positive tracks on the album, that finds him yearning for love. However, I can’t help but hope he will learn how to cope with his success in a less destructive manner one day. Maybe that story line is just part of his appeal. Either way, expect his starboy status to brighten even stronger with this project.

Sting Alert: Two Week Notice

kickstarter-stingrays

So, exactly why are you doing this? What is the benefit? How does it work?

These are just a few questions I’ve received since launching my Kickstarter. Many of you likely know by now about my new poetry book, Stingrays. Last year I did a Kickstarter for my first novel, Fortune Cookie. The campaign ended up being a huge success, thanks to the amazing backers who supported it. I think it’s safe to say that poetry is a harder market to tap into though. Everyone loves to read about sex, lies and dark secrets. However, poetry tends to get a bad rap for not being as sexy. Hopefully I have helped change that with all of my poetry books, especially Stingrays

I don’t believe anyone can ever write the perfect poem. People have different tastes and opinions on what is great poetry. Nonetheless, I always desire that my poetry is relatable to others. While I was writing Stingrays, many feelings poured from my head to the paper. 2016 definitely had its share of “stinging” moments for me, as I’m sure it did for you as well. In fact, our society has experienced several “stings” including social injustice, senseless violence and negative social media impacts (we often overlook this one).

Stingrays is only being released as an ebook on my birthday, February 4, 2017. I decided it would be a cool idea to still offer print copies as well. This is where the Kickstarter comes into play. So, here are 5 quick reasons why I chose to do a Kickstarter for Stingrays. Oh and by the way, today marks 2 weeks left to get your copies!

  1. Innovation – Let’s face it. The traditional way of selling books is virtually out the door for most authors. Why not shake things up a bit?
  2. Exclusivity – When I purchase a book or a CD, I always love getting those extra perks like the making of it, T-shirts and special items.
  3. Minimally Evasive – Ok, you may be scratching your head on this one. I also have a new novel coming out next year in July. So instead of having 2 separate book signings, the Kickstarter seemed like the better idea.
  4. Global reach – Everyone all over the world uses Kickstarter. It’s a fast way to get visibility for your products in other countries that may take a long time to reach on your own.
  5. Convenient/Cost Effective – The pledges are not charged on your card unless the project is fully funded on its end date. Plus, how cool is it to just sit at home and collect some awesome rewards. Think of it as an Amazon order, but way better.

Again, only two weeks are left. I appreciate everyone who has already supported and those who still will! Check it out and feel the sting with me HERE

John Legend Knows Better Than This

In this photo released by Warner Bros., talk show host Ellen DeGeneres is seen during a taping of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" at the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, Calif. (Photo by Michael Rozman/Warner Bros.)

2016 has proven to be a year of awakening. However, there are some of us who have been “woke” for quite some time. John Legend is one of those people. His lyrics are prolific and his vocals are unmistakable. I heard him as the keynote speaker at a Frito Lay event a few years ago. Oh and I probably should mention, his speech was impromptu. Nonetheless, his presentation was flawless. Although his last album, Love In The Future, spawned the biggest hit of his career with “All Of Me”, that was almost 4 years ago. Even one year can be eternity in the music business. Now, he’s back with a new release, Darkness and Light, set to drop this Friday, December 2nd.

Legend’s previous releases have specs of political awareness and courageous stands against injustice. Darkness and Light, his fifth studio album, is poised to be the beacon of hope for this generation. He says he wanted to make a conscious project that reflects everything happening today, without sounding cliche. He has already revealed two well received singles from the album, including the fiery “Love Me Now” and the self shaming “Penthouse Floor”, with Chance the Rapper. Now, “I Know Better” takes center stage. This track was released over the weekend. The song exudes elements of gospel and deep soul. The production here is simple. In fact, the song sounds melancholy at first listen. However, if anyone can teeter on the fence of soul stirring sadness, John Legend can.

John Legend delivered a rousing performance of “Love Me Now” at this year’s American Music Awards. This album appears to be void of intricate tales of infidelity and gold digger chronicles. John Legend knows how to tap into his audience. That isn’t the kind of music we need now. He realizes, that now we need music of substance more than ever. We need timeless classics. Sounds like he’s about to deliver just that.
