You’re Gonna Miss Me

miss-you-pics

Isn’t it funny how we often miss what has left us? Relationships, friendships and even job positions seem to have more meaning when they are no longer active in our lives. Why does this have to be though? Why does it take losing someone or something to appreciate its full worth? A friend and I were having a conversation about this very thing last week. I think we all have been in situations where we have had to show our worth to those around us. Sometimes we have to leave a job to prove a point of our worth. Relationships may have to be broken if we are being taken for granted.

The pain of moving forward and leaving comfortable situations behind can be unbearable. However, we have to do it. Sometimes we have to step out on faith to go to the next level. This requires unorthodox actions to truly get what we deserve. Here are 3 ways to know our worth may be diminished in the eyes of others.

Are You Too Nice?

This one hits home for me. Many people say I am a really nice person. For the most part, I am. However, there are times when being nice just doesn’t cut it. This is especially true when it comes to workplace situations. The jerks often get more respect. People already know their boundaries and act accordingly. Be yourself, but don’t be a doormat.

Are You Unprepared?

The early bird usually does get the worm. While this is applicable to job situations, it also counts in relationships. I always laugh to myself when I hear how desperate some people are to be in a relationship. Don’t get me wrong. Love is a beautiful thing. Some people are not even prepared to receive it though, let alone give it back.

Are You Getting Too Comfortable?

Comfort zones can be a dangerous thing. Many times, we stay with people and places because we tell ourselves we can do no better. This is the furthest thing from the truth. If it doesn’t grow you, it’s not for you!

My latest poetry book Stingrays, also speaks of knowing your worth. Make sure you pick up your physical copy today (offer ends on December 13th)! There are also some special perks for supporting the book, including custom T-shirts, signed replicas of the cover art and an early bird special for my upcoming novel, No Cream In The Middle!

Prince’s Moonbeam Levels 4Ever

prince

We knew it was coming. Prince released enough albums to fill up a whole trunk while he was alive. Fans are still mourning his loss even now. Today, his estate quietly released a new compilations album entitled 4ever. The album is basically a 2 disc greatest hits collection. However, it does include some lesser known tracks, including “Peach”, “Gotta Stop (Messin’ About)” and “Glam Slam”. “Moonbeam Levels” is the sole new track on the project. The song was originally recorded during the 1999 album sessions, but was ultimately scrapped.

The song includes somber lyrics about him not wanting to die. “Moonbeam Levels” is reflective and a bit somber. Something about it sounds like it could almost fit right in to the current sound of today though. Then again, Prince was never one to follow musical trends. He created them. There’s a deep underlying sense of sadness here though, despite the song being recorded over 30 years ago.

Many of the die hard Prince fans are biting their nails for the Purple Rain repacking next year. That was the album that defined the pop status of his career. His influence and legacy is like no other. This year, he even took home the American Music Award for Best Soundtrack in 2016. Yes, 2016. That is over 20 years after the original release of the album. The Purple Rain repackaged set will supposedly include a complete disc of never before released material. There’s no question that the man who redefined the color purple and more importantly music as we know it, will live on 4ever.

4ever is available online and at select brick and mortar stores where music is sold. Hits like “Pink Cashmere”, “Hot Thing” and “Adore” are omitted. Nonetheless, his catalog is a force to be reckoned with. Will you be buying the new Prince album?

I couldn’t track down the original song, but here is a cover of it from a duo called Synthetic Chocolate. I’d say they pulled off Prince’s sound well. However, you’ll have to get the album to hear the real thing.

Sean Paul Gets Busy Again

seanpaul

Sean Paul dominated the rap and pop music charts nearly 15 years ago. Talk about dating yourself. His sound was inescapable; then he just disappeared. The music industry is 10 times more fickle now than back then. Everyone from Drake to Rihanna and Justin Bieber (Lord help us) is experimenting with the dancehall sound. However, Sean Paul hasn’t been a part of this new movement. He’s sour that he hasn’t received the credit he deserves for ushering in this style. He truly did help dancehall music become more mainstream. Sean Paul isn’t waiting for applause. Now, he’s using his music to stake his claim.

Sean Paul quietly released two new singles over the weekend. “No Lie” featuring Dua Lipa, is an instant club hit. The song has urban radio appeal with a crossover appeal. This one is classic Sean Paul like he never left. Then there’s “Tek Weh Yuh Heart” (just think “take away your heart” lol), featuring Tory Lanez. Although the song isn’t as fast paced as “No Lie”, it’s just as addictive. This track is slightly more sensual than Sean Paul in his hey day. However, he pulls it off extremely well.

The self proclaimed dancehall king had fans stuck like glue, made us get busy on the dancefloor and raised our temperatures. The new music suggests he’s ready to do it all over again. Hopefully he’ll deliver a new album soon and revive his star power.

What are your thoughts on “No Lie” and “Tek Weh Yuh Heart”?

Tune In For An ADD Takeover

2016-06-25_carlosharleoux_015

There are some places where anything goes. The ADD Show Through The Eyes of Robi Nickoli is one of those places. I had a blast promoting Fortune Cookie on the show in July with Robi Nickoli, Kay Boss Lady and Erick Murphy. So, with the Kickstarter for my new book, Stingrays, just launching, I knew I wanted to come back again. However, I will actually be taking over the show this time! That’s right, I will be hosting It’s The ADD Show tomorrow on ThaAfterparty Radio on the B Side. Tomorrow’s show will have plenty of laughs, fun, snaps (for the poetry lovers) and even a surprise special guest.

No discussion will be off limits. Make sure to tune in tomorrow from 2:00 to 4:00 pm CST. I’ll be discussing my new poetry book, Stingrays. I’ll be sharing the meaning behind the title of the book, some of the poetry from it, as well as the inspirational thoughts that sparked it. Learn how my publishing company, 7th Sign Publishing, got started, music that inspires me to write and even my thoughts on our current political climate. There will be much more too, but you’ll have to tune in to hear it all.

Stingrays has been a long time in the making. I endured some uncomfortable experiences to create the pages that will hopefully be in front of you soon. Isn’t that what life is all about though? Taking our painful moments and making them into something beautiful. I know that many of you will be able to relate to the topics discussed in the book. Like the rawness of It’s The ADD Show, Stingrays is unfiltered truth. Social media’s impact on self esteem, forgiveness, the passing of a loved one and injustice are just some of the topics discussed in the book.

Tune in tomorrow at Tha Afterparty Radio! The show is going to be one you don’t want to miss!

A Tribe Called Quest Still Lives On

atcq

The surviving members of  A Tribe Called Quest (rappers Q-Tip and Jarobi White and producer Ali Shaheed Muhammad) blazed the SNL stage this Saturday. The group performed the politically charged anthem “We The People” and the poignant “The Space Program”. We Got It From Here….Thank You 4 Your Service was released on Veterans Day  (November 11th). The title is fitting of a group that stands tall as one of rap’s premier pioneers. The pain of lost member Phife Dawg is definitely felt here. However, the rapping duo trudges on well in spite of their heartache.

We Got It From Here is split into two different volumes. There was recent chatter of a new ATCQ album right after Phife Dawg passed. However, no one knew just how close the finished product was. Songs like the slinky, groove oasis “Solid Wall Of Sound” bleed classic ATCQ. Jack White, Elton John, Kendrick Lamar, Busta Rhymes and Andre 3000 all lend their incredible talents to the album as well. Nonetheless, every moment of We Got It From Here, sounds carefully calculated, without feeling contrived. In fact, Andre 3000’s lengthy appearance on “Kids” just makes us yearn for an OutKast reunion even more. Despite the lack of any sure shot pop offerings here, that has never been ATCQ’s lane. They went pop without trying. They are still loved by the masses, without lying but speaking truth. The oft put, bluesy “Melatonin” is perhaps one of the best examples of this.

Although it may have been 18 years since their last studio album, A Tribe Called Quest has returned like they never left. The music on their latest release is militant without being offensive. Their lyrics are particularly serious, without being too preachy. Phife Dawg, who actually named the album, would be extremely proud. “Black Spasmodic” is arguably his best moment on the album. Here, he shares lyrical space with Q-Tip. Q-Tip raps about how Phife would have wanted the group to continue their rich legacy. Sadly, this will be the group’s last studio album. A Tribe Called Quest, we thank you for your many years of service to Hip Hop. More importantly, we thank you for always staying true to your artistry.

I’ve Been Stung…Have You?

kickstarter-stingrays

Today is a very special day for me, for several reasons. I released my first poetry book, Blurred Vision, five years ago. Now, I’m really anxious to share my latest book. Stingrays will be released on my birthday, February 4, 2017. This poetry collection will only be available as an ebook. However, there are physical copies available for a short time. A Kickstarter campaign was launched today, which will run until December 13th. There are plenty of perks associated with getting the physical copy of Stingrays, through Kickstarter. Here are a few of the reasons why you don’t want to miss out on getting your printed copy of Stingrays:

  • Get your name printed as a backer in the printed edition of the book.
  • Receive an autographed replica of the covert art from graphic designer, Michael Lamb.
  • Get an exclusive Kickstarter T-Shirt
  • An excerpt from No Cream In The Middle, the follow up to my debut novel, Fortune Cookie.

Also, there is one more great reason why you should support this Kickstarter campaign. No Cream In The Middle is being offered as a discounted pre-sale (before its July release)!

Stingrays is my most personal work to date. Life has a way of stinging us and it’s all about how we react to it. We are human and sometimes we react gracefully; other times we react with impulse. Love, forgiveness, death, social injustice and self-esteem are just a few of the topics discussed.

Check out the video below to get a preview of what Stingrays has to offer. Also, here is the link to more information on the Kickstarter campaign: Stingrays Poetry Collection (Feel The Sting)

I also cannot let today pass without a huge thank you to all of the veterans who have served America! Thank you for all that you have done and are doing!

Let’s All Just Be Honest

hiding

People were walking on egg shells yesterday. The tension was thick enough to cut with a knife. I noticed how people were very careful to state their opinions of the election results. However, everyone tried to be diplomatic. However, social media showed people’s true colors. I saw posts and captions that were bold, very opinionated and at times, downright disrespectful. Anonymity is king. People feel more comfortable to express their beliefs in a tweet, Instagram post or Facebook status. I guess honesty has become extinct. We can’t call ourselves “honest” people if we act differently on social media than we do in person.

A couple of years ago, I released a poetry book called Honesty Box. The concept of the book was actually inspired by some comments that an unidentified “friend” said about me on social media. Ironically, to this day, I still don’t know who that person is. Nonetheless, everything happens for a reason. The message that was sent to me inspired me to write. Social media breeding ground for cowards. So, this poem below, taken from Honesty Box, sums up how I feel. Head on over to the Book Store to get your copy of Honesty Box, along with 6 other amazing reads.

Plus, check back on tomorrow for a big announcement that will pack a dangerous “sting”! Trust me, you really don’t want to miss out on this one.

So you’ve finally got balls

What took you so long?

Stepping out of your deceptive shadows

With your shameful cloak in tow

Sweeping the floor

I should applaud you for being so brave

But I won’t

My hands wouldn’t dare

Kill the beautiful space

Betwixt them…on….you

As a matter of fact

I’ll scrap the last few lines

That began to trickle down

From thought to pen

To fingers to paper

All in the name of

Common Explains Black America….Again

common

Common has always been a socially conscious rapper. He spoke about justice and politics at a time when it wasn’t popular to do so. So, many people may think his 11th studio album, Black America Again, is militant. In fact, this album is less aggressive than its predecessor, the underrated classic, Nobody’s Smiling.  However, the inspiration that brought him to this point is new and fresh. His activism is as cleverly appropriate as ever. He’s more than the “nice guy” that has dated his share of celebrity beauties (Erykah Badu, Serena Williams and Taraji P. Henson). He’s more than just socially aware. He’s thought provoking and brilliantly in tune with his surroundings.

“Home” appears early on in the tracklist for Black America Again. This track captures the essence of his early days, with a thumping drum line that won’t let him. Bilal also contributes his vocals to the track (and several other songs on the album). In fact, Common has quite a few guest stars to help him relay his message. Everyone from Stevie Wonder to Marsha Ambrosius join in for the audible activism. He keeps the momentum going on the title track, “Black America Again” with the aforementioned Stevie Wonder. He runs down several of the recent events that have been sensationalized (and in his words, downplayed) by the media.

“Love Star” is one of the few songs that takes a break from his conscious message to let love in. This slow jam is sure to be a fan favorite and radio hit. “Red Wine” takes it a step further with its seductive, trance inducing vibe. As expected, he collaborates with John Legend again for another award worth recording called “Rain”. The song has an instant vintage vibe that feels triumphant. As if that wasn’t enough, “Letter To The Free”, sums up the essence of the entire album. Plus, the song was written for Ava Duvernay’s film 13th.

Black America Again is less about anger and more about peace. The lyrics recount events and plead for a resolution. New fans who will hear Common for the first time on Black America Again, welcome to the party. For those that have always been a fan of his music, this is another great addition to his eclectic catalog.

Alicia Keys: Here And Better Than Ever

alicia-keys-here

The baddest female in music with a pen has returned. Dispute it if you must. Love her or hate her, there’s no denying Alicia Keys’ uncanny ability for writing a great song. She immediately captured the hearts of millions with her debut single, “Fallin”. She hasn’t looked back since, only reaching greater heights. Diary of Alicia Keys is my favorite body of work from her. Her latest album, Here, may give it a run for its money though.

Alicia Keys opens the nearly 45 minute Here with a rousing poem entitled “The Beginning”. However, “The Gospel” really kicks off the album with an impressive rap sung flow. This is new territory that suits her well. The production is gritty too, which makes it even more authentic. She takes a more spiritual approach to this album. This is evident on the edgy declaration “Pawn It All”, the soul stirring “Illusion of Bliss” and the acoustic, thought provoking “Holy War”.

Make up isn’t all she shed for the sake of Here. She’s noticeably more socially conscious (check out “Kill Your Mama”). Also, she seems less concerned with crafting chart topping hits. Ironically, I think fans will resonate and purchase/stream this album by the droves. Her signature raspy growls take a back seat to a Hip Hop influenced urgency. Here is void of any features, except on the upbeat, autobiographical tale, “Blended Family”.

There aren’t any radio friendly moments here. However, the self-esteem boosting “Girl Can’t Be Herself” and the Motown soul reminiscent “Work On It” are the most likely candidates. However, Alicia Keys’ aim is clearly not bubblegum pop. She has carefully crafted an experience of an album, by following her own rules. My only complaint is the omission of the stellar singles “Hallelujah” and “In Common”. She’s here and relevant like never before.

Dangerous Illusions of Bliss

illusion

Last night, I watched an interview about one of my favorite artists, Alicia Keys. She talked about her new album, Here. There was one question in particular that really stood out to me. The interviewer asked, “What is your favorite song on the album?” Alicia Keys pondered for a moment before stating that “Illusion of Bliss” was her favorite. She said she questioned several people about what makes them happy. She alluded to the fact that many of the things that make us happy may truly be smoking ashes.

The conversation surrounding the song’s concept really made me think. How many of us continue to walk through life not knowing our purpose? Often times, we choose the popular or convenient option towards the road to happiness. Happiness is a lot like money; when it comes easily it leaves just the same way. We don’t like taking the hard, sometimes painful road to pursue the breathtaking view at the top of the mountain. I always like to think of true happiness as that thing you will do for free. It’s what makes you smile when no one else is around. It’s one of your first thoughts in the morning and one of your last before you go to sleep.

Who really wants to live under the haze of an illusion? Don’t get me wrong. We have all been there before; searching for what gives us fulfillment. However, there are certain aspects of happiness that we should not compromise on. Happiness should never cause you to disrespect yourself, only strive to please others and leave you feeling hollow once the adrenaline rush leaves. Do you really want to be happy? Find what drives your passion. Find what boils the blood in your veins. Look for what you are willing to stand for, even if no one else does.

Are you living in true happiness or just the illusion of bliss?

Oh and speaking of happiness, I’m so excited for next Friday (November 11th)! Stay tuned as I’ll be making an announcement about my new book, Stingrays.

Today also marks day 3 of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). Get your copy of my debut novel, Fortune Cookie, before the sequel comes out next year!
