Miguel And His Funky ‘Cadillac’

Miguel burst onto the music scene six years ago, with the cool and confidently collected single, “Sure Thing”.  All I Want Is You (his debut album) also featured the hits “Quickie” and “All I Want Is You”. 2012 was the real turning point of his career though. Kaleidoscope Dream was released that year. That album was led by the Prince-esque love ballad, “Adorn”. “Adorn” was the runaway hit that cemented the album’s success. Miguel officially became a superstar. Twenty years from now, we’ll still remember that song. Wildheart,  his third album, showcased his rebellious, rock side. He proved he was not afraid to experiment. “Cadillac” marks Miguel’s return to music after a brief few months of silence.

“Cadillac” is the lead single lifted from the Netflix original series soundtrack, The Get Down. The Get Down is set in the Bronx, during the birth of Hip Hop in the 1970s. Miguel croons a groovy plead to get a special woman in the backseat of his Cadillac. The production of this song alone is fire and I could easily listen to the track without his vocals.

However, Miguel effortlessly weaves in and out of falsetto and lower register tones. He isn’t the best singer in the world but he’s a master of making the best of his voice. “Cadillac” is the perfect Summer party song; with a heavy dose of vintage flavor. Miguel’s growth as an artist can definitely be felt here. “Cadillac” will be on repeat for quite some time.

Netflix will release the first six episodes of The Get Down this Friday, August 12th. The soundtrack will be available as an Apple Music exclusive album, for a limited time. Nas and Grandmaster Flash are also featured on the soundtrack.

What are your thoughts on Miguel’s “Cadillac”?

‘Suicide Squad’ Slashes The Competition

Suicide Squad will likely rake in nearly $150 million by the time all domestic box office weekend sales are tallied. The film isn’t far from its $175 million budget to break even. Suicide Squad has already broken records as the largest opening weekend ever for the month of August. The cast includes Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Ben Affleck and Viola Davis. The unorthodox super heroes are actually prisoners bartering for a lesser sentence. These criminals all have an ability or skill that defies human comprehension. I have heard a few bad reviews about the film, but I actually enjoyed it. The plot is definitely refreshing and DC Comics should be proud of this one.

Now, on to the soundtrack. The music inspired by Suicide Squad is as much of a mixed big as its diverse cast. However, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The album provides a little bit of something for everyone, including classics like Panic! At The Disco’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”, War’s “Slippin’ Into Darkness” and Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Fortune Son”. Eminem even lent one of his biggest hits, “Without Me”, to join the lineup.

Don’t fret. There is new music here too though. “Sucker for Pain” could have been a train wreck for disaster with six artists (Imagine Dragons, Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa, Ty Dolla $ign, Logic and X Ambassadors) all on one track. The song actually provides one of the best efforts on the album, despite its eerie undertones. “Heathens” by twenty one pilots offers a dark track that sounds off as a creepy, gentle warning to not tick off the Suicide Squad (“Please don’t make any sudden moves/You don’t know the half of the abuse”).

The ladies also prove they can hang with the big boys on Kehlani’s seductive, syrupy “Gangsta” and Skylar Grey’s deliciously rebellious “Wreak Havoc”. The vocal power house Grace serves up her defiant declaration “You Don’t Own Me” featuring G-Eazy. Grimes gets a piece of the action too, with her delicate vocal purrs smashed against jagged guitars and drums on “Medieval Warfare”. The weakest link on the album is Kevin Gates’s “Know Better”. The song isn’t bad, but it also fails to stand up against the other solid tracks on the album.

Suicide Squad : The Album pulls out some of its biggest guns straight out of the gate. Rick Ross and Skrillex have the privilege of carrying the album’s first single, “Purple Lamborgini”. The beat is infectious, leaving it nearly impossible to sit still. Rick Ross’s cool, dangerous swag was the best personality to have on this type of song. His line, “Forgive me for my wrongs, I have just begun” single-handedly sums up the whole premise of the movie.

Watch the movie and then listen to the soundtrack or vice versa. The main point is you definitely need to make both items a priority this summer.

Frank Ocean And Four Other Let Downs

Boys Don’t Cry; Fans Do

The time is now 6:03 pm. Frank Ocean’s long awaited Boys Don’t Cry album has still not arrived. The album reportedly was set to drop exclusively on Apple music yesterday. Frank Ocean shook up the music scene in 2012 with his debut album, Channel Orange. He won two Grammy awards, sold millions of records and received massive critical acclaim. Frank Ocean quickly became one of the most sought after artists/songwriters/produces in the music industry. He even crafted hits for Beyonce, Brandy, Jay Z, Kanye West and John Mayer. Fans have since grown weary waiting for new music from him.

Fast forward to August 6, 2016. Frank Ocean has been promising the release of his sophomore studio album, Boys Don’t Cry, for well over a year now. There is a mysteries receipt of stamped dates featured on his website. August 5, 2016 was one of the dates stamped on that receipt. November 13, 2016 is also listed on that receipt. Time will have to tell the true story. Will fans stick around long enough to support him by then?

Frank Ocean isn’t the only artist that has promised new music and taken for ever (or never) to deliver it. Four other artists have kept us waiting for far too long.

Where’s My Detox?

Let’s be clear. Dr. Dre has no need to ever make another solo studio album again. However, his The Detox album was supposed to be released as far back as 2011. The Chronic 2001 was released ten years prior in 2001. Dr. Dre was reportedly not pleased with the album enough to release it. Straight Outta Compton on video and the Compton soundtrack will have to suffice as any new music from Dr. Dre. We can also still listen to some of his best music on a pair of Beats headphones too.

Still Killing Us Softly

Few artists that can still tour and maintain their credibility off of one album. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was released nearly 20 years ago. Lauryn Hill was already a star as the front-woman of The Fugees. Her real stardom came when she broke away as a solo act. She has recorded an MTV Unplugged album, been featured on tribute projects (Nina Simone) and even released a few singles. There hasn’t been an official sophomore album, despite flashes of new music. Some fans believe Ms. Hill has lost her touch. She’s still selling out concerts worldwide singing songs from her heyday from over 15 years ago though.

The Never Ending Pep Rally

Missy ‘Misdemeanor’ Elliott hasn’t released a studio album since 2005’s The Cookbook. She has kept busy writing and producing hits for countless other artists. She released two singles, “9th Inning” and “Triple Threat”, produced by Timbaland. Fans thought a new album would soon follow. There was no such luck. Missy is now poised to take the industry by storm again, following her Super Bowl performance last year with Katy Perry. Plus, she has released two highly successful singles “WTF (Where They From) and “Pep Rally”. She has promised a new album soon. We’ve heard it all before though. Hopefully she follows through this time.

Rock Royalty Returns

Metallica is arguably one of the most beloved rock bands of all time. Their career spans over 30 years. The group wowed the crowd at this year’s pre Super Bowl show. The reaction they received proved that they are still Rock music royalty. Metallica made an announcement of a new album coming “soon” at that performance. However, Metallica has been hinting at a new album for well over 2 years now. Red Hot Chili Peppers and Blink 182 have both recently proved that there is still room for 90s nostalgic groups like Metallica to stake their claim. Let’s hope their new album releases before Christmas.

Who else would you like to see release their long awaited album this year?

Cookie’s Frightening Dilemma

I released my first novel, Fortune Cookie, last November. Now, the follow up is completed and is currently going through the editing process. Fortune Cookie is the first book in a three part series. The second installment is even more suspenseful than the first. NCITM (I’ll reveal what that stands for later) comes out next year; but you don’t want to be left behind. So, here’s an excerpt of Fortune Cookie below. Cookie thinks that the her streak of bad fortune is over, but in fact it’s just beginning.

Cookie smiled and told her dad that she loved him as she hung up the phone. Although she did believe Chelsea would call back soon, she had to admit she wasn’t so secure in that. Something felt eerily strange this time. Something was different. She immediately prayed for her sister and asked God for her protection wherever she was and whatever she was doing.

Her phone rang almost immediately after finishing her prayer. She was halfway expecting for it to be Sheila. They hadn’t really talked since her embarrassing outburst at the massage parlor and she did promise her that she would call to let her know how the meeting with Tina went. However, to her surprise, it was Chelsea. Cookie was so excited to see her sister calling that she almost dropped her phone attempting to answer it.

“Hello!? Chelsea? I was getting worried about you. You ok?” Cookie spoke excitedly.

Now there was dead silence for what seemed like an eternity.

“Chelsea? Chelsea? Are you there?” Cookie thought that maybe there was a problem with the phone connection and she was about to hang up and call her sister back. But she could distinctly hear a soft echo of whimpering in the background. Nervous and not knowing what to expect, her intuition led her to stay on the line.

“Chelsea?” A dark and distorted voice finally answered on the other line, with a sinister laugh. “This ain’t Chelsea b%$^#$”.

Cookie’s heart sank to the very pit of her stomach. She was speechless and could not catch her breath. She felt her chest tighten with a vice grip of fear, but she had to stay focused. “What? Who is this? Put my sister on the phone right now! Who the hell are you?” Cookie screamed.

Stoli Likes It HOT…Do You?

Habanero

I prefer to keep the hot peppers away when it comes to drinks. Spicy drinks are usually not my cup of tea or juice for that matter. Ginger is the only spicy flavor I will readily drink. I absolutely love hot food though. However, I refrain from making my food too hot when I cook for other people. I decided to be adventurous this weekend at Full Circle Tavern and try jalapeno flavored vodka that my sister in law suggested. Jalapeno flavored alcohol seemed weird to me, but I decided to give it a shot; literally.

In less than 10 seconds I had a change of heart. Stoli Hot, the brand of vodka, had a surprisingly smooth taste. Don’t mistake it; the drink does have a kick. The heat didn’t set in until the aftertaste. Believe it or not, I asked to see the bottle so I could buy my own soon. I recommend having a glass of water after a shot of it, but it’s not anything that will make you gag for air. You should definitely try Stoli Hot for your next happy hour, party or even night in the house.

What is the strangest drink you’ve ever tasted?

Bottoms up.  It’s Thirsty Thursday!

The Sting Between The Sheets

This week, I announced that my new poetry book, Stingrays, will be released early next year. Stingrays is close to 90% completed, so I am excited to share this new collection of poetry with you. My first novel, Fortune Cookie, took a year to write; but poetry is a different beast. Fiction follows a certain rhythm of defining the plot, developing characters and creating mental imagery. However, I prefer not to force myself to write poetry. I can push myself to write about certain topics in poetry, but I prefer to keep it organic.

Stingrays has taken me a year and a half to write. There were certain things I had to live through to be able to write about. There were also certain things I had to witness repeatedly before I became fed up with enough to write about. Poetry is comprised of emotions and intimate thoughts. My poetry always speaks from my point of view so even if the story doesn’t belong to me I can relate to it. Poetry is sacred and intentional, despite the fact that it can be open to various interpretations. This collection of poetry consists of thoughts transferred from my head to paper. Few people have have even viewed some of these poems.

One of the poems that will be featured in Stingrays, entitled “Between the Sheets”. I will leave this one up to your interpretation; but remember that all things are not as they seem. The spice of life is created through different vantage points so leave your thoughts on what you think this poem is about.

Between The Sheets

Turn the sheets back

So I can see you better

So I can inhale you deeper

Skin to skin

And witness your glorious splendor

Leave the lights on

The experience is more memorable that way

Besides, I’d hate to feel my way

Around such a rousing beauty

In the pitfalls of darkness

Tell me all your thoughts

Whisper your fantasies into my ear

I’ll keep them quietly sequestered

Take control when I ask you to

Bite my lips, pull my hair, whip me while

You tie me up in this velvet chair

Never set me free and offer me

Decadent, incredible edibles

But don’t forget to be gentle when

You know I need it most

Leave your inhibitions on the coat rack

If you play nicely, I might let you

Have them back when I’m done

Giving you an experience that’s too spectacular

For virtual existence,

An astringent lifting and sifting

The surface, shallow preconceived notions

From your brain

What’s behind door #1?

You’re not afraid to go deeper are you?

Don’t tell me you’re scared

To get a little messy, are you?

Drop your tepidness to the floor

Follow me down the hazy corridor

When it’s all said done they’ll

Want to know just how

The creamy center oozed and spilled to the floor

Tell them they should have been there

Kenny Chesney and Pink Play With Fire

P!nk has been quite the pyro obsessed siren these days. Just a couple months ago, she released “Just Like Fire”, lifted from the film Alice Through The Looking Glass. The song has already brought her much success, not to mention another Billboard Top 10 pop hit; her first since 2013. As if that was not hot enough, she’s back near the fire yet again. This time she’s the supporting act with Kenny Chesney on his new single “Setting The World On Fire”, just released on Friday, July 29th. Kenny Chesney was able to get P!nk to be less funky and boisterous than she usually is on the new song. However, it’s not the first time we’ve seen a subdued P!nk before. Her duets album with Dallas Green, You+Me, was the epitome of molasses bluegrass folk and soul.

Why You Should Give The Song A Listen

The subject matter of her duet with Kenny Chesney doesn’t shy away from a racy story line. They trade verses about crossing the line as lovers and enjoying it. Though they both love the feeling, they know there may be consequences to pay. While their voices aren’t the most likely matches, they mesh as well as the first person who discovered peanut butter and jelly should be together on a sandwich.

“Setting The World On Fire” is the first single from Kenny Chesney’s upcoming 17th studio album entitled Cosmic Hallelujah (love that title btw). The song has been #1 on iTunes US Top 100 chart. If this single is any indication of how the album may sound, I’ll definitely have to check it out. Plus, do we really need an excuse to get new music from P!nk? I think it’s about time for her to release a blazing hot new album too.

What are your thoughts on “Setting The World On Fire”? Would you Bump It or Dump It?

The Rap Game’s 2nd Quarter

Since its powerful introduction in the music industry in the 80s, there’s no denying that rap music is here to stay. Rap is now a part of popular music and sells millions of records. Ask Nelly, whose debut album, Country Grammar, just joined the elite diamond club with over 10 million in sales. Now rapper, producer and CEO of So So Def Records, Jermaine Dupri is back with the second season of The Rap Game. The unique aspect of the show is that it focuses on children (usually between the ages of 10 to 16) who aspire to be professional rappers. These kids have already garnered much public attention on their own and a strong social media presence. They are just missing that one big break to really set their career off.

Why Should You Watch The Show
These kids actually do have great talent. Many of them write their own lyrics, still excel in school and have charming personalities. Plus, there are guest appearances from celebrities like Mariah Carey, Monica and Snoop Dogg. Jermaine Dupri also has some of his team of producers on the show to create tracks especially for the contestants to rap over in the studio. Most of all, the show is giving back to children who are serious about their careers, without being too dramatic like most reality TV shows.

The Cast
This season’s lineup consists of Jayla Marie, Tally, Mini Barbie, J.I., Lil’ Key, Mani and Nia Kay.

Still Standing
Mini Barbie and Tally have already been given the boot and sent back home. Mini Barbie’s time on the show was the shortest, after she failed to be able to catch her breath during her audition for Jermaine Dupri (with Da Brat and Timbaland also in the same room). Tally barely made it a little further but was also kicked off the show once she forgot her lines in front of Snoop Dogg. She still couldn’t gain her composure even after Jermaine let her grab her notebook. Now, there are 5 left on the show.

My Prediction for the Winner
In the beginning, I was really rooting for Jayla Marie. She has a very unassuming look for a female rapper and has a wholesomeness that could give her a wide appeal. However, she doesn’t write her own raps. Most genres of music don’t require artists to write their own lyrics. Rappers gain most of their credibility though from actually writing their own lyrics. I think this will greatly diminish her chances of succeeding on the show.

Mani is middle of the road for me. He’s pretty good, but his style seems too familiar to me. Nia Kay on the other hand does have great stage presence and she also has a strong personality. In fact, her personality is so strong that she quickly clapped back on Jayla Marie this week when she made a comment about her hair. Nia Kay rebutted that her dad had to help her finish writing her verses. Ouch.

J.I., also known as the Prince of New York has a bit of a quirky look. However, a rapid fire flow that easily rivals rap heavyweights like Twista and Bone Thugs N Harmony. He’s actually my choice for who should win, but his mother’s feisty Brooklyn attitude will likely be his down fall. Then there’s Lil Key. Something about him reminds me of 50 Cent, but he still has his own style. On this week’s episode, he really won over Jermaine Dupri by including some historical facts about his hometown in his rap. When it’s all said and done, I think he’ll be the one to take the crown if he remains consistent.

Who do you think will be the King or Queen of The Rap Game this season?

Catch the show every Friday at 9pm CST.

Are You Ready To Feel The Sting?

I have always been a lover of water. Water is one of God’s most soothing and interesting creations to me, especially waters of the ocean. Every book I have ever written has to start off with the concept and title first. The title and concept are part of the backbone of how I am able to write. I remember having the idea to release another poetry book a little over a year ago. I was browsing the internet, when I kept seeing a pop up about stingrays on the computer.  Pictures and pop ups of stingrays kept appearing on my computer screen. I hadn’t even searched for anything close to that online before then. The pictures of the various stingrays almost seemed to haunt me and that’s when it hit me – Stingrays.

I started researching more about these very interesting and odd looking fish. For the most part, they are harmless and mind their own business in different parts of the seafloor. They can easily camouflage with their surroundings, taking on different colors. Many of them grow over 6 feet long and can weigh almost 800 pounds. Plus, ancient dentists even used the venom from the stingray’s spine as an anesthetic. Crazy, isn’t it? In life, it’s easy to feel “stung” by certain things, even when we feel like we are minding our own business. We all react to life in different ways, depending on our environment, influence of those around us and our own personal beliefs.

Stingrays details my feelings about certain situations, whether it’s the familiar pursuit for financial gain, matters of the heart or the impact of social media on self-esteem. This is one of the most personal works I’ve ever written and I know many of you will be able to relate to the content here. I truly can’t wait to share this book with everyone! Stay tuned, as I’ll be unveiling additional updates about Stingrays within the coming months, leading up to its release next year for 2017.

Prepare yourself to #FeeltheSting.
