Brandy: Singer Verzuz Baby Mama

Baby Mama < Peauxetic Expressions

Eight long years have passed since Brandy released her last studio album, Two Eleven. Although she has released a couple of singles here and there as an independent artist (“Beggin & Pleadin” and “Freedom Rings”), she has been tight-lipped about any signs of a new studio LP….until now. With a career that spans 25 years of music, there’s no denying that she was one of the quintessential artists of the 90s. Now, she’s back to reclaim her throne and remind everyone that she’s a mother.

Brandy’s new Chance the Rapper assisted single, “Baby Mama” has garnered warm reception so far. The beat is banging and Chance the Rapper steals the show with his rapid-fire, witty flow. However, at this stage in Brandy’s career, I’m a little underwhelmed that this is the choice for her first single. Lyrically it seems to fall flat compared to some of her classics like, “I Wanna Be Down”, the Grammy Award-winning catfight, “The Boy Is Mine” or even “Put It Down”.

Nonetheless, the song is growing on me. Plus, the video is a nice lift for the song (even though it doesn’t have much to do with the song itself). Don’t get me wrong, celebrating single motherhood is admirable. Fantasia even did it on her debut album. Ahem….her debut album. Again, Brandy is seven albums in and I’m missing the wow factor behind this lead single selection choice. But, I digress.

In other Brandy news, there is a great buzz around fans requesting a Verzuz battle with her and Monica. Honestly, I think it would be quite an entertaining show to witness. However, neither of the ladies has expressed interest in participating in a “battle”, but may consider a “celebration”. For now, we can all anxiously await this Saturday’s matchup between R &B/Neo-Soul heavyweights Erykah Badu and Jill Scott.

Check out “Baby Mama” featuring Chance the Rapper. What are your thoughts on the song and her upcoming album, b7? Is it a worthy comeback single?

10,000 More Steps To….

Steps < Peauxetic Expressions

I don’t think anyone could have predicted we’d be where we are now in 2020. Aside from a few inevitable road bumps along the way, I thought everything would be bigger, bolder, and more profitable. Sometimes the answers to our most fervent prayers come in the most unusual packages. Today, I finished up my new normal routine before relaxing to watch some TV.

My typical work from home day starts with waking up and working out using one of my old Tae-Bo DVDs (I know….a super throwback), showering, logging in to work around 7:30 am, working til past 5:00 pm, going for a 30 minute jog, another shower, maybe a little more work, and squeezing in some semblance of quiet time/working on my books/catching up on TV shows. Today, I noticed that my average daily steps have increased to an average of 10,000 since I’ve been working from home in quarantine.

Is it just me, or have the recent weeks forced you to accomplish some of those goals that were previously collecting dust on the shelf? Before quarantine, my average daily steps topped out at about 6,500. I wished to stay active during the quarantine. I’m doing it. I wished to wrap up a novel I’m releasing later this year. It’s complete. I wished to save more money and get tighter on my budget. Yep, checked that one off too. I’m a natural introvert and enjoy my alone too, which I’ve gotten more than my fair share of recently. Sometimes our opportunities stare us squarely in the eyes; we just have to take them.

The 10,000 steps at the end of the day represent much more than mere physical activity. I like to think of it as giving praise for one more day of good health, a chance to meditate and map out my goals, review next steps on where I need to be and if I’m lucky, find some pretty cool ways to make those thoughts a reality. How are you using your steps during these uncertain times?

4 Songs That Should Have Been Singles from E=MC2

Mariah Carey/Mimi/The Elusive Chanteuse has done it again. She recently celebrated the 15th anniversary of her record-breaking Emancipation of Mimi comeback album. However, the 12th anniversary of its follow up, E=MC2 is making headlines now. The album, which still marks her highest opening sales week for any of her albums to date – 463,000 copies – has just re-entered the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart and is currently #1 on the US iTunes chart.

In celebration of the album, which spawned the #1 Pop hit, “Touch My Body”, here are 4 songs from the album that should have been lifted as singles. Following the success of the album’s lead single, “Bye Bye”, “I’ll Be Loving You Long Time” (still scratching my head on why this one wasn’t a hit), and “I Stay In Love” were released as official singles, with moderate success.

“Migrate” featuring T-Pain. Mariah Carey herself wanted this track to be a single. Although it wasn’t one of my favorites from E=MC2, it would have been a sure-fire hit. The unlikely pair of her and T-Pain actually meshed well here. The uptempo melody would have been a nice transition as a club-ready second single to ride the wave of “Touch My Body”.

“Side Effects” was less celebratory than much of the album. The song detailed Mariah Carey’s caution about falling in love, as a result of past heartbreak. Lyrically, she walks us through all of the troubling thoughts she has about love. After just one listen, it’s easy to see why she’s so hard to fall. Despite its dark mood, this song would have fit quite nicely on her Caution album.

“I’m That Chick”. This upbeat fan favorite is probably the one that everybody thinks got away. The lyrics aren’t particularly deep or noteworthy, but most people love a good ego boost – and that’s exactly what this song did for many female listeners. Rod Temperton and Johnta Austin co-wrote this Stargate produced (and written) track.

“Last Kiss”. Mariah Carey is the queen of “you still love me and won’t ever forget me” ballads. Just go down the list of “Always Be My Baby,” “My All,” “We Belong Together”, and “Don’t Forget About Us”. Oh, and it was produced by Jermaine Dupri, who collaborated on many of her biggest hits (and 3 of the 4 previously mentioned tracks). This seemed like a no-brainer for a single, but apparently her label didn’t think so.

Relieve some of the brightest moments of E=MC2 below. What are some of your favorite tracks from the album?

Kelly Rowland Serves Up a Hot Cup of ‘Coffee’

Teasers for Kelly Rowland’s new single, “Coffee”, have been all over social media lately. The former Destiny’s Child founding member hasn’t released a full-length studio album since 2013’s Talk A Good Game. That album was underrated, with several missed opportunities for singles, including “Talk A Good Game”, “#1”, and “Put Yout Name On It”. The singer hasn’t confirmed whether or not “Coffee” is merely a new track or an upcoming lead-single from a new album, it’s nice to hear some new music from the voice that carried much of Destiny’s Child’s harmonies.

Kelly wastes no time explaining her intentions in the song. She sings, “Before you go to work, I need you to go to work.” Obviously, she would beg to differ that Folgers is the best part of waking up. At least not better than sex. The video finds her looking as stunning as ever, with dancers donning outfits that resemble different “shades” of coffee. Vocally, the song is a bit of a departure for Kelly as she flaunts her lower register here. She pulls it off very well and manages to stay at the forefront of the song’s complicated production.

My only gripe, if there is one, is just as soon as the caffeine hits your system, “Coffee” is over. The song clocks in at just barely over 2 minutes. Check out Kelly’s piping hot “Coffee” for yourself below and let me know what you think.

The Tale of A Lonely Two

Yesterday, I heard a clip of an interview from the actress Nicole Ari Parker. For those of you who may not know, she is married to actor Boris Kodjoe. The couple has been married for 15 years. Fast forward back to this week, when Nicole stated how she misses the excitement of the single life. She even went as far as entertaining outside flirting because it’s a “fresh and new feeling”. Oh, and apparently Boris was in the room. Somebody’s quarantine time probably isn’t going to well.

So, what does this have to do with anything? If you’ve followed my blog for a long period of time, you know I tend to stray away from speaking on relationships. My belief is relationships are all different (to some extent) and simply cannot be summed up in one blog. Nonetheless, many couples today deal with the feeling of losing the fire in their relationship. I commend Nicole for at least being honest about her feelings. Maybe she just needed some coaching on the approach….but that’s just me.

Staying in a relationship, job situation, friendship or any binding commitment can be difficult once one or both parties have shifted their focus (either voluntarily or involuntarily). I always say that the worst loneliness is feeling alone even when there are other people around that ideally should combat those feelings. That type of loneliness inspired one of my new poems, “Lonely Two” (snippet below), from the Hindsight 20/20 re-release. If you don’t have your copy, check it out here. It’s always better to face our demons now, rather than regretting those things we should have said in hindsight.

I used the napkin in my lap to/ Wipe off the residue of our/ Last savory crumbs/
You placed yours in your lap/ Lipstick left on the rim of the glass/ As evidence/ That we were there physically/ Yet mentally in outer space/ Don’t find yourself making/ These types of reservations/ Because the worst kind of loneliness/ Is to be tethered to withered love/ “Lonely Two” from Hindsight 20/20

Kayla Williams Makes Us Believers

Kayla Williams > Peauxetic Expressions

The first time I heard Kayla Williams’s voice, she immediately piqued my interest. Although her genre is gospel, her velvety smooth rasp easily places her into neo-soul stylings. Her vocals bleed through the speakers with a delivery that makes you feel as if she’s singing to you personally. Kayla’s debut EP, I Believe, is appropriately titled not only for her love for Jesus Christ, but how she easily makes listeners a believer in her immense talent.

The opening title track, “I Believe”, highlights her unwavering trust in God amid an uptempo track filled with keys and a thumping bass line. However, the production takes a backseat to her stunning lead and background vocal arrangements. It’s a great track to get your day started off on the right note, literally and figuratively.

“Fly” follows with a more contemporary sound and a lighter approach. Nonetheless, the message here is still important – self-confidence in ourselves, while knowing where our strength comes from. “Love Letter”, my favorite track on the EP, has an R&B feel that effortlessly flaunts Kayla’s beautiful falsetto. She pens a public declaration for her love for Jesus (“I wanna give my love to you/My heart, my soul, my body too/Cause life with you is so much better/So Jesus, here’s my love letter”).

I Believe closes out with the bonus track, “Transparency”. The song has poetic elements that urge the listener to dig deeper to unmask insecurities to trust the higher power within. It doesn’t take much to believe that Kayla Williams will make a great impact on music, with her own brand of stirring vocals and lyrics. Check out her music below. Plus, experience her feature as one of the vocalists in this year’s “Why Did He Do It?” Resurrection Sunday performance, by John Patrick Adams.

The Prickly Pear Pop (Boba) Life

Prickly Pear < Thirsty Thursday

A few weeks ago, I had lunch with some friends at Beto & Son in Dallas. It was my first time at the restaurant, but it was highly recommended. Plus, who doesn’t love some good Mexican food (or Tex-Mex)? I can make a meal out of chips and salsa alone. But I digress. Although this type of setting doesn’t seem possible in the very near future (with the Coronavirus craziness going on), I can at least reminisce.

I tried their Prickly Pear Swirl Margarita, which was amazing. I’m a big fan of anything pear flavored and this drink exceeded my expectations. However, it wasn’t just the margarita itself that stole the show. Enter popping bobas. In full transparency, I can eat a bowl of popping bobas by themselves. Don’t know what they are? First of all, shame on you. Just think of Gushers candy, but juicier with a softer shell. Amazing.

The mixing of the pear and mango boba flavors really set this margarita over the top. I’ve never tasted anything like it at another Mexican restaurant in Dallas (or anywhere for that matter). It’s just that good and the food is pretty tasty too.

Bottoms up….it’s Thirsty Thursday!

The Weeknd: Open for ‘After Hours’

After Hours < The Weeknd

The backbone of The Weeknd’s musical formula lies somewhere between futuristic and 80s tinged pop. “Tryna be a better man, but I’m heartless”. This single line from “Heartless”, sums up the theme of his latest album, After Hours. The constant push and pull for the need of love and shunning its presence are sprinkled through this latest body of work (and much of The Weeknd’s career). Nonetheless, After Hours is worth staying up for.

The Weeknd has managed to keep the very mystique than made him famous. “Alone Again”, the opening track, finds him crooning in his signature Michael Jackson-esque high falsetto. He explores an all too familiar theme in his catalog of substance abuse and a lover on standby. Somehow, it sounds just as fresh as the first time we heard it years ago.

After Hours is such a cohesive body of work that fans will either love or hate. Although there are disruptive pulses that shake up the beautiful monotony (listen to “Hardest to Love” and “Blinding Lights”), the common thread here is a man who’s somewhere suspended between love, the abusive of self, and reflection.

The fact that the album has already received nearly 400,000 equivalent sales units with little promotion is a testament to The Weeknd’s loyal fan base. Considering the current climate, other high profile artists like Alicia Keys and Lady Gaga have opted to push their albums back to let the dust settle first.

For the above reason, After Hours may not be the best self-quarantine soundtrack to lift your spirits. Nonetheless, it’s a calculated album that will surely evoke more shining moments in The Weeknd’s already bright career. The deluxe version of the album features special remixes and the SNL performance of “Scared To Live”. Plus, it offers a bit of a pick-me-up from the draining closing track, “Until I Bleed Out”. Ironically, fans will likely be right there to witness every high and profound low point well into the wee hours.

Love Isn’t Blind….We’re Just Blind to the Bull@#$!

Love Is Blind

Spoiler alert: If you plan on watching the Netflix series, Love Is Blind, but haven’t seen it yet, proceed with caution.

First, I was suckered in by the influencer reality show, The Circle, on Netflix. Then came Love Is Blind. The premise of the show is several men and women get to potentially meet the love of their life. Oh, there’s one catch though – they can’t see the other person. They speak to each other in separate, plush pods and drill each other on everything, including life goals, favorite foods, and even Star Wars impressions.

Ideally, if the couple hits it off one of the two people proposes and they start their journey towards marriage. I personally don’t believe love is blind – but we put blindfolders on to excuse it. In other words, we make ourselves blind to the bull@#!

I won’t focus so much on the cast members, but my thoughts about some of their actions or lack thereof. So, here we go….

Blind to Being the Runner Up

Let’s start with Jessica and Mark. Jessica ultimately got played here because the guy she thought wanted (Barnett) ended up picking someone else. He told her he could see himself proposing to her and she took it and ran with it. Meanwhile, she also felt a connection to Mark who was 10 years her junior.

Once she realized Barnett chose Amber instead, then she went back to Mark. He accepted her (of course) and made excuses along the way because he genuinely loved her. Even Amber could tell that Barnett and Jessica had unfinished business and her insecurities showed through her actions. Moral of the story, when you pick someone just because she/he is available, it hardly ever works out. Choose wisely (and honestly). SN: I really hoped Mark was going to go off on Jessica, but sadly he never did.

Blind to Giving Yourself Too Much Credit

Kelly and Kenny…sigh. She felt like she never had that “spark” with Kenny and ultimately dumped him at the altar. While her honesty is commendable, she had an heir that exuded arrogance. She lost a lot of weight and had seemingly changed some things in her life but inside she was still overweight. It’s funny how a person’s inadequacies sometimes manifest a false sense of confidence that pushes people away. Kenny ultimately found another woman after the show and started a great relationship without Kelly. I might have laughed out loud a bit.

Blind to Being Comfortable In Crazy

One of the most shocking moments of the show (behind Carlton calling Diamond a bitch after she confronted him about being bisexual) was the fact that Gigi and Damian were still together. With the exception of a few of the couples, most of the guys were too good for the women on the show. In case you’re wondering, yes I’m including Cameron and Lauren in that bucket too – but I digress. Gigi was extremely immature and took some pretty low digs at Damian on the show. He said “I don’t”, but somehow ended right back with her after the show. Some people just thrive better in toxic situations – a concept I’ll never fully understand.

I do believe in strong emotional connections (outside of the physical) and even think love, at first sight, may be true. However, we go wrong when we start making excuses and placing the blame on love. No. We do what we want, with who we want, for however long we want because it fit for that moment. Maybe it’s because we’re trying to catch a rebound. We might need validation for our ego. Maybe we’re in it just for the sex…or the money…or the clout…but whatever the case, we are not in it blindly. Love may blur our vision, but it will never make us totally blind.

Mar1asol Serves Up Tasty Beats and Donuts

Mar1asol

Mar1asol has a tough tenderness to her voice that immediately draws you in. Her angelic tone and confidence suggest she has several albums already under her belt. However, she just released her debut album, Beats and Donuts, last year. Her soulful singing style is sweet, but not in a gimmicky sort of way.

Let’s take the lead track, “Right Now”. Mar1asol stated that the song was actually penned about her relationship with her mother. Nevertheless, it easily fits into a love song as well. The vibe of the song may put you in the mind frame of Marsha Ambrosius. Don’t mistake it though. Mar1asol may give glimpses of other artists in her music (see if you can pick up Kelis and Kehlani vibes), but her style is all her own.

“I just love you so/Do you love me more?” she croons on the sexy and aggressive, “Do You Love Me”. She even spits a few bars here that add spice to an already saucy track. “What I Want” is a mellow groove with a sweet melody. She’s not afraid to sacrifice and be vulnerable in the name of love. “Fine” is one of the standout tracks with a slumping bass line that won’t let up. At her core, Mar1asol seeks understanding in love throughout much of Beats and Donuts.

“Ass On My Face” is the wild card track on the album. She showcases more of her rap-singing skills here, with a Latin flavor that’s muy caliente to say the least. You’ll probably be singing this one in your sleep. “One Way” turns the tempo down to a 90s inspired jam session. She exhibits her loyalty here to stick it out in a relationship when the times get tough.

Mar1asol closes out the album with the optimistic “Morning Son”. Any love worth having is worth working for and she’s ready to put in the work. The song has a tinge of an 80s skate feel which works well with the melody. Expect Mar1asol to make some major waves in 2020. She’s got next and proving her unique brand of artistry is worth a decadent bite.
