Chance The Rapper Drops 4 New Tracks

Chance the Rapper fans have been waiting on new music from him for quite some time. Sure, he has collaborated with everyone from John Legend to DJ Khaled. Oh and we can’t forget his much anticipated joint album with Childish Gambino. He even recently revealed that Kanye West would be producing a forthcoming 7 track album. While there is no concrete confirmation yet, he just simultaneously released four new songs. Looks like he will be dropping a lot of music in the coming months to make up for lost time. Coloring Book is merely two years old. In that short time, his career has skyrocketed. Chance the Rapper has become a mainstream success as an independent artist on his own terms.  So, this is the perfect time for him to release new music. That album still gets rotation in my playlists.

Work Out

This is a playful track that finds Chance the Rapper rap singing over gentle production. He leads off the song speaking about some of his set backs have turned into brighter days for him. He tells all his exes to “keep your shirt down” because he’s with his fiance now. The latter half of the song showcases more of his rap flow. This one is for all of those people who may be going through hard times, but specifically anyone who has moved on from a previous breakup.

65th & Ingleside

This one comes in with a bang, complete with layered percussion arrangements. Chance the Rapper recounts his humble upbringing and how he broke into the music business. He really showcases his unique niche style here that eventually made him a breakout star. Of all four tracks, this one is definitely my favorite. Chants in the background sing, “Everything is gonna be ok. Don’t you know, I made a way outta no way”.

I Might Need Security

This song starts off on a clearly explicit note, with a looped sample from Jamie Foxx’s classic I Might Need Security stand up special. Chance the Rapper still isn’t into signing contracts and he blatantly calls out racist ideals. At just 25 years old, he flaunts the wisdom and business prowess of someone well beyond his years. The sampled loop cheapens the song a bit after hearing it so many times. Nonetheless, it’s admirable to see Chance the Rapper still standing up for Chicago and his beliefs after achieving such crossover success.

Wala Cam

This is the only track of the four that features other artists (Supa Bwe and Forever Band). Chance the Rapper’s (and even the guest features) fiery verses are so on point here, that the annoyingly redundant “Wala Cam” chants are nearly irrelevant. Judging by this track and the others, his new music seems to have a bit more of a direct, yet playful vibe compared to some of the soulful tracks like “Blessings” and “Finish Line/Drown” from Coloring Book. Either way, I’m ready for more new music from a rapper who isn’t afraid to create his own lane.
