Mar1asol Serves Up Tasty Beats and Donuts
Mar1asol has a tough tenderness to her voice that immediately draws you in. Her angelic tone and confidence suggest she has several albums already under her belt. However, she just released her debut album, Beats and Donuts, last year. Her soulful singing style is sweet, but not in a gimmicky sort of way.
Let’s take the lead track, “Right Now”. Mar1asol stated that the song was actually penned about her relationship with her mother. Nevertheless, it easily fits into a love song as well. The vibe of the song may put you in the mind frame of Marsha Ambrosius. Don’t mistake it though. Mar1asol may give glimpses of other artists in her music (see if you can pick up Kelis and Kehlani vibes), but her style is all her own.
“I just love you so/Do you love me more?” she croons on the sexy and aggressive, “Do You Love Me”. She even spits a few bars here that add spice to an already saucy track. “What I Want” is a mellow groove with a sweet melody. She’s not afraid to sacrifice and be vulnerable in the name of love. “Fine” is one of the standout tracks with a slumping bass line that won’t let up. At her core, Mar1asol seeks understanding in love throughout much of Beats and Donuts.
“Ass On My Face” is the wild card track on the album. She showcases more of her rap-singing skills here, with a Latin flavor that’s muy caliente to say the least. You’ll probably be singing this one in your sleep. “One Way” turns the tempo down to a 90s inspired jam session. She exhibits her loyalty here to stick it out in a relationship when the times get tough.
Mar1asol closes out the album with the optimistic “Morning Son”. Any love worth having is worth working for and she’s ready to put in the work. The song has a tinge of an 80s skate feel which works well with the melody. Expect Mar1asol to make some major waves in 2020. She’s got next and proving her unique brand of artistry is worth a decadent bite.
